20-10-16 Tractors, "420" Series Predelivery, Delivery, and ISO-Hour Services Predelivery and ISO.Hour Services 39. OPERATION. After all the foregoing servicing has been completed, check operation of tractor. Check clutch operation, shift through all transmission gears.' Test steering, brakes and power take-off operation. If tractor is equipped with direction reverser, check operation of this unit. On tractors equipped with foot-operated throttle check operation of this unit. 40. HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OPERATION. Dual Touch-o-matic. When testing the dual Touch-o-matic, set the selector lever in the rear position and make sure the lift arm locking pin is removed so the arms will work separately (Figure 20-10-40). Figure 20.IO.38-Sequence 01 Tightening Cylinder Head Cap Screws 38. TAPPET LEVER CLEARANCE. Remove both spark plugs. Crank engine slowly holding thumb over No.1 (front) spark plug port. Compression stroke of No. 1 piston starts when air pressure is felt against thumb. Continue to crank engine slowly until DC mark on flywheel lines up with lines on side of timing hole. With mark in this position, the front two valve tappets can be adjusted as shown in Figure 20-10-39, using a.0is-inch feeler gauge. After front tappets are adjusted, crank engine exactly 1/2 revolution and adjust rear tappets to.0is-incll. Figure 20-IO-40-Selector Levers and Arm Lock Pin (420 T Illustrated) With the engine running at fast idle, move the control levers through their range. Lift arms should rise when the levers are pulled to the rear, drop when levers are pushed forward and remain stationary when control levers are stationary. Figure 20.IO-39-Adjusting Tappets If lift arms continually move up and down when control levers are stationary, it is possible that the valves controlled by the selector lever, are not firmly seated. If this condition exists, tap the selector lever firmly into the rear position to seat the valves. This condition may also be caused SM-2019 (2-57)

Check to$ee that clutch pilot bearing is correctly installed and position thoroughly cleaned flywheel on dowel pin and mounting flange on rear of crankshaft. Insert four attaching cap screws and locks and tighten to 75-80 foot-pounds. Turn one tab of each lock up against flat of each cap screw head (Figure 60-25-25): Figure 60-25-23-Tightening Fan Belt Clutch Assembly. Generator. These shims must be in place when checking backlash. NOTE: Refer to Figure 130-20-25 for identification of parts. Insert output shaft (A), with rear bearing cone (B) in place, into rear end of transmission case. Slide shaft forward and install second- and reversespeed sliding cluster gear (D), with large gear to the rear. Slide on first- and fourth-speed ~sliding gear (E) with groove for shifter fork facing toward front, and finally slide on third-speed sliding gear (F), with groove for shifter fork facing toward rear of transmission case. Slide shaft forward until rear bearing cone is seated in bearing cup. Install spacer (G) with chamfered edge of hole against shoulder and slip previously established preload shim pack (H) on front of output shaft. Install output shaft front bearing cone (I). Install fiat washer (J) and lock nut (K). Lock transmission into two gears and tighten nut to 100 foot-pounds, lining up a slot with one hole in end of output shaft. (If cotter pin hole in shaft does not line up with slot, tighten until hole does line up-do not loosen.) STEP 4-RING GEAR AND PINION BACKLASH ADJUSTMENT To determine amount of shims required in the the left and right shim pack to provide.006- to.012-inch backlash between ring gear and pinion, proceed as follows: 1. Reinstall the differential or ring gear and hub assembly and quills with one gasket under right-hand quill (Figure 130-20-26). Do not install gasket under left-hand quill at this time. (4201, 420T, and 420W Tractors do not use gaskets.)
