RESULTS OF AGRONOMIC AND WEED SCIENCE RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN SOUTH CENTRAL MONTANA - 2006 The Annual Report of the Investigations at and Administration of the Southern Agricultural Research Center, Huntley, Montana http://www.sarc.montana.edu/annualreport/2006/ PROJECT TITLE: PROJECT LEADER: OBJECTIVES: METHODS: Weed Control in Established Roundup Ready Alfalfa with Glyphosate and Other Competitive Standards Steven R. King, Weed Scientist, SARC, Huntley, MT To evaluate crop tolerance and weed control in Roundup ready alfalfa with glyphosate and other competitive standards Herbicides were applied twice at POST timings with a CO 2 backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 10 gal/a using 8001XR nozzles spaced 18 inches apart. Weed response following herbicide applications was evaluated visually using a rating scale that ranged from 0 (no visible injury) to 100% (complete plant death) Weed control ratings were determined visually estimating the amount of weed biomass present in each plot compared to the non-treated control plots. Harvest data will be discussed in the results section. Experimental site and herbicide application data are presented in Table 1 and Table 2. Table 1. Site information Field: C Variety: Silty Clay Loam First Cutting Date: 7/07/06 Second Cutting Date: 8/10/06 Variety: Roundup ready alfalfa Table 2. Herbicide application Treatment Timing: POST Date Treated: 5/25/06 Time: 5:00 PM Soil Moisture (Surface): Dry Alfalfa 1.5 tall Prickly lettuce (LACSE) 1.5 tall Density: 2 per plot wild Oat (AVEFA) Stage 1 tall Density: 5 M 2 field bindweed (CONAR) 2 tall Density: scattered Treatment Timing: POST CUTTING Date Treated: 06/01/06 Time: 2:00 PM Soil Moisture: Dry Alfalfa Established, 2 stubble Wild oat (AVEFA) 2 cut-off Density: 10 M 2 Kochia (KCHSC) 2 cut-off Density: 2 M 2

Prickly Lettuce (LACSE) 2 cut-off Density: 4 M 2 Common lambsquarter (CHEAL) 2 cut-off Density: 5 M 2 RESULTS: No injury was caused by any treatment regardless of glyphosate formulation or tank mix. Weed biomass attained from plots was equal among herbicide treatments. Yield was also equivalent among treatments for both the first and second cutting.
