Section 1: Introduction Thank you for purchasing our BMW interface harness. This harness is designed to help you achieve partial integration of your BMW s built in mobile phone capabilities and your hardwired handsfree car-kit. Below is a list of components that you should have received from us or have purchased separately. We will then discuss the installation of your harness. Section 2: Installation of the wiring harness Lets get to the trunk and locate the cabling you will need to have access to. We will be working on the driver s side of the trunk. You will need a small flathead screwdriver to remove the clips so as to pull back the cover panel. Vehicle pictured is a 2000 323i if you have a newer vehicle you may have an access port or holes for the optional DVD nav system and/or CD changer. Installation is much the same. You will need the following components to complete the installation: Interface harness set two components Nokia (or other) handsfree car-kit (purchased separately) Tools required are dependent on location of mounting see details in your car-kit instruction manual. Material to splice 4 power wires from the harness to your kit (purchased separately). This kit provides integration of most handsfree car-kits with the car s stereo for radio mute and use of the built in BMW cell phone speaker. The BMW microphone location can also utilized with the purchase of a microphone adapter plug. The radio display indicates "PHONE" when a call is in progress. The BMW/phone electronics will stay active after you turn off the car off to allow you to complete a call in progress (if your car kit supports this functionality). We do not offer support for display of the calling number on the radio, etc. at this point. This harness is designed to make installing your car-kit easier without the need to cut or splice any wires on your BMW. You will still need to follow the instructions of your car-kit for mounting the interface box and cradle (if applicable) this information is not discussed in this document. Pry off the black retaining clips and save for reassembly. There should be two. Your car may be slightly different.
In this photo you will notice that the taillight housing has been removed do this by squeezing the tab on the side of the housing. Pin 1 in this picture is bottom row, to the right. On the side where the cable enters the connector. Begin prying away the liner it is stiff and will require a bit of effort. Here is what we are looking for! Note that pin 1 on the adapter plug you will install has a capacitor in that location this may assist you in making sure you have the correct pin lined up with pin 1 on the BMW harness. Our connector also only has 24pins not 26 you will leave the end two un-used (the two on the end opposite the capacitor). See further down for another photo of proper connection.
Attach Harness to the BMW harness BE CERTAIN to align it correctly pin 1 to pin 1. Here are two different views. Section 2 continued: Connecting the harness in the center console. Remove cupholder and coin holder by pulling up at the point the cupholder and coinholder meet. Then fish around behind where the coinholder was until you can pull this connector out. Some vehicles have the connector attached fairly securely to the drive shaft tunnel if you cannot reach/find this connector you may need to remove or loosen the center console to gain access. This is the 18 pin connector you are looking for.
The harness has four colored wires the must be attached to the four wires that should be available on your car kit (this is true for most kits check our website for Nokia kit compatibility). Run your wiring, attach and insulate these wires to the car kit wires, and then plug in the harness (this will help prevent short circuits since the battery supply is live even with the car turned off). We have also provided a microphone connector this links directly to the microphone wiring in the overhead console. Some people do use this wire and connect their mic in that fashion however most notice a significant reduction in audio quality due to the length of the wiring run. Optional steps mounting is at the customer s discretion. You may wish to disassemble the center console and fit the car kit in it and run your microphone and cradle wires from there. Other popular locations are under the glove box or behind the ash tray and covered oddments tray. Attach adapter cable noting which pin is pin 1 alignment is crucial to prevent damage to car electronics. Cable Notes: Nokia Version Cabling to Speaker and microphone are provided as follows: Small Audio plug Microphone (do not use if you are using the microphone that came with your car-kit): White +, Black Large Audio plug Speaker: Red +, Green Sony Ericsson Version Cabling to Speaker and microphone are provided as follows: Audio plug Microphone (do not use if you are using the microphone that came with your car-kit): White +, Black Black header Speaker: Red +, Green -, Red connector should be on the first pin near the power connector on the HCB-30
