Digitalization optimizes ship operation The Internet of Things is becoming more and more relevant for entire ships and their drive technology. Sensors and a digital infrastructure supply service- and operation-related data from motors and converters, which is then analyzed including cloud-based via MindSphere and serves to unlock new optimization potential. Examples include energy savings and preventing unscheduled machine downtime offshore thanks to the ability to detect problems early and perform scheduled maintenance at the next port. Drive Train Analytics With Drive Train Analytics, the main drives, thrusters, bow thrusters, boosters, and POD drives in other words, all the drives responsible for the speed and maneuverability of your ship are treated as a complete system. The goal is a comprehensive view of each drive, because the mediumvoltage converter collects data on functions like current, voltage, operating hours, switching operations, and error messages. And with condition monitoring, high-voltage motors collect measured data on vibration, bearing/stator temperature, and motor speed. Not only can this data be analyzed locally, in the future it will also be transferred to MindSphere the cloud-based, open IoT operating system and evaluated there using specialized applications. For the analysis, the results of motor and converter evaluations are combined and complement one another, resulting in an informative overall picture of the entire drive system. Shaft generators drives for PTO and PTO/PTI operation Unlike typical on-board system generators, shaft generators are not connected to their own diesel supply but are driven by the main diesel engine via the propeller shaft or a gear train. Shaft generators are operated in conjunction with a frequency converter. In PTO (power take-off) operation, the generator supplies the on-board mains with power. Electricity is generated extremely economically and at high voltage quality via the frequency converter. In PTI (power take-in) operation, an SGM (shaft generator with motor function) functions as a motor via the frequency converter. The converter is powered by the generators in the auxiliary diesel generator sets. In PTI operation, either PTH (power take-home) or booster mode is activated. PTH mode ensures the ship s maneuverability if the main drive fails and guarantees that it can reach the next port. In booster mode, extra power is diverted to the propeller (for example, in difficult running conditions).
