Disassembling The Gauge These Instructions are for a 2570 PJ Gauge that is to be re-built at a Work Bench. Gauges use Metal and Teflon Shims for alignment purposes. They are located behind or in front of the Sprocket, Tape Storage Sheave Assembly (TSSA), Negator Motor or Cassette Bushing. Note the number and order of Shims behind these items! A Metal Thrust Washer is used in the Gland. 1. Remove these items, Counter Cover (Item 43, Pg. 7), Back Cover (Item 2, Pg. 8), Three Screws (Item 34, Pg. 7), Retainer Ring (Item 12, Pg. 7) Inch Dial and Inch Dial Gear (Item 36 & 13, Pg. 7). Clean old gaskets from castings. 2. Remove the Negator Motor (Item 49,50 & 51, Pg. 8), TSSA (Item 52, Pg. 8), and Tape Keeper (Item 7, 8, 9, Pg. 8). 3. Loosen the two Set Screws (Item 10, Pg. 8) in the Sprocket (Item 23, Pg. 8); note the amount of Shims (Items 35 & 24, Pg. 8) that are behind it. Slowly pull out on the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7) and remove the Sprocket (Item 23, Pg. 8). Remove the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7). Remove the Gland Washer (Item 19, Pg. 8). 4. Notice that the Bushing (Item 21 or 21L, Pg. 7) is extended out just past the Counter Frame. Remove the three screws (Item 34, Pg. 7) in the Counter Assembly (Item 54, Pg. 7). Remove the Counter Assembly. 5. Remove these items; Checker Handle, two screws (Item 10, 33 & 30, Pg. 7) Checker Snap Ring (Item 31, Pg. 7) Shims (Item 32, Pg. 7). Checker Assembly and Spring (Items 29 & 27, Pg. 8). 6. Remove the two Shafts (Items 46, Pg. 8) if the Gauge is to be sand blasted. 7. Clean the Gauge Body, Back Cover and Counter Cover as needed. Replacing The Brass Bushings In The Gland The Brass (Bronze) Bushings are Oil Impregnated. THREE TYPES OF GLAND CONFIGURATIONS ARE USED IN THE 2570 GAUGE. THEY ARE LISTED BELOW 1

REMOVABLE GLAND ASSEMBLY 1. The Removable Gland (See Item 15, Pg. 11) has a Snap Ring (Item 18) holding it in place. The Snap Ring is mounted on the Counter side of the Gauge. Remove the Snap Ring (Item 18) and Shims (Item 20, Pg. 11). With a hammer, tap the Gland out of its mounting place. 2. This Gland Assembly is replaceable, Part No. G-2570-15. The seal, Shims and Snap Ring are included with this item. 3. Place a small amount of SILICONE around the new Gland before installing. Replace the Shims and Snap Ring (Items 18 & 20, Pg. 11). The Gland should not slide back and forth in the opening, add more Shims if needed. The Silicone should be dry before installing the other items! NON-REMOVABLE GLAND, CAST IN THE BODY, TWO BRASS BUSHING Remove the Bushing and Seal with the procedure below. 1. Thread the Front Bushing (Item 21 or 21-L, Pg. 7) (Counter side) with a 3/8-16 TAP. Install a 3/8-16 X 1 bolt into the Bushing. With a drift pin, drive the Bushing out from the Sprocket side of the Gauge. If the Bushing is ½ long this Boss Gland has two Bushings, go to step number 2. If the Bushing is 1-1/4 or 1-3/4 long, this Boss Gland uses only one Bushing. See instruction: NON -REMOVABLE GLAND CAST IN THE BODY, ONE BRASS BUSHING. THE NEXT STEP WILL REMOVE THE INNER BRASS BUSHING AND THE SEAL AT THE SAME TIME. 2. Thread the BUSHING (Item 22, Pg. 8) With a 3/8-16 TAP, on the SPROCKET Side through the Seal (Item 16 or 16T, Pg. 8). Install a 3/8-16 X 1 bolt through the seal into the Bushing. Use a drift pin; Drive the inner Bushing and seal out from the Counter side of the Gauge. 3. INSTALLING THE NEW BRASS BUSHINGS, Install the COUNTER SIDE BUSHING FIRST (1/2 X 5/16 X ½ LONG), PART No. G-2570-21. Use a Brass Bushing Insertion Tool (PART No. BBIT-1) to insert the Brass Bushing. Place the Bushing on the tool, place the Bushing in the mounting hole and tap the tool with a hammer. The Bushing MUST BE DRIVEN IN UNTIL IT HITS THE SHOULDER STOP inside the Gland. 4. INSTALL THE SPROCKET SIDE BUSHING (3/8 LONG) PART No. G-2570-22. Using the Brass Bushing Insertion Tool (PART No. BBIT-2), Place the Bushing on the Tool, place the Bushing in the mounting hole and tap the tool with a hammer until the Bushing is flush with the inside of the Gland. Use a Socket that fits in the cup side of the Seal (Metal 2

Seal) and drive it in until it rest on the shoulder of the Gland. If using the Teflon seal, it can be pressed in with your Thumb and then driven in with a socket. Seal Cup side out. NON-REMOVABLE GLAND CAST IN THE BODY, ONE BRASS BUSHING REMOVE THE SEAL AND BUSHING ONLY WITH THE PROCEDURE LISTED BELOW. 1. Remove the Bushing (Item 21-L, Pg. 7) and the Seal (Item 16 or 16T, Pg. 8) at the same time. Thread the Bushing with a 3/8-16 TAP on the Sprocket side through the seal; Install a 3/8-16 X 1 bolt in the Bushing. Use a drift pin and drive the Bushing and seal out, driving them out from the Counter side. 2. INSTALLING THE NEW BRASS BUSHING (PART No. G-2570-22-1.75) Use a Brass Bushing Insertion Tool (PART No. BBIT-1) to insert the Bushing. Place the Bushing on the Bushing Tool. Placing the Bushing in the Mounting hole, Counter side of the Gauge, Tap the Tool with a hammer until the tool stop on the face of the Gland Boss. Use a Socket that fits in the cup side of the Seal (Metal Seal, Item 16, Pg. 8) and drive it in until it rest on the shoulder of the Gland. If using the Teflon seal (Item 16-T, Pg. 8), it can be pressed in with your Thumb and then driven in with a socket, cup side out. Installing The Inch Dial Shaft and Counter Assembly 1. Install the Inch Dial shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7) into the Brass Bushing; check that the shaft rotates freely and that there is no binding. The Bushing may be reamed out with a 5/16 Drill Bit if needed. The Following Procedures are very crucial. For the Gauge to work properly, the Counter Pinion Gear and the Dial Gear must be calibrated correctly. See Drawing No. 2434-1. Place the Gauge on a table on its Back Cover side. 2. Remove the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7) and install the Counter Assembly (Item 54, Pg. 7) along with the three mounting screws (Item 34, Pg. 7). Do not tighten the screws; just snug them up to the Counter. Install the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) on the small Shaft of the Counter. Install the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7). Install the Dial Gear (Item 13, Pg. 7) onto the Hub of the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7). The tooth of the Dial Gear (See Drawing, 2431-1) should not be placed at the Pinion Gear for these alignments. 3. The face of the Pinion Gear and the Face of the Dial Gear must set flush or just above flush. The Dial Gear MUST NOT sit below the Pinion Gear. A Teflon washer(s) (Item 35, Pg. 7) may be place between the Brass Bushing (Item 21 or 21-L, Pg. 7) and the Dial Hub (Item 11, Pg. 7) if needed to make corrections. 4. The Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) has 8 Teeth, Four of them are only half of a tooth, and one of these teeth must sit under the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13-M, Pg. 7). Two of the full teeth 3

must sit almost against the side of the Dial Gear a small amount of distance must be maintained. Notice the Pinion Gear in Drawing No. 2434-1. Alignment of the Counter Assembly 1. Holding the Counter Assembly (Item 54, Pg. 7), Slowly rotate the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13- M, Pg. 7) as the tooth on the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13-M, Pg. 7) passes the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) there should be no binding. If binding occurs, slide the Counter to the left or to the right and do the procedure again, do this until the Dial Gear and the Pinion Gear rotates freely. When this procedure is correct, hold the Counter Assembly (Item 54, Pg. 7) in place and tighten one of the three screws (Item 34, Pg. 7). 2. Remove the Dial Gear and tighten the other two screws on the Counter assembly. Place the Dial Gear back onto the Hub, rotating the Dial Gear; make a final check to insure that the Pinion Gear and the Dial Gear rotate freely. Make any adjustments at this time. This procedure may need to be repeated several times for proper operation. 3. Remove the Dial Gear and the Pinion Gear, and set aside. Be Careful not to Damage the Counter Assembly while doing the next Procedure! Installing The Sprocket When installing Shims (Metal or Teflon), Teflon Shims should always be placed next to a rotating item. 1. Install the Thrust Washer in the Gland (Item 19, Pg. 8). It should fit against the Seal (Item 16 or 16-T, Pg. 8) and on the inside of the Gland Boss. Replace the Shims (Items 24 & 35, Pg. 8) that were behind the Sprocket (Item 23 or 23-M, Pg. 8). Install the Sprocket and tighten the two Set Screws (Item 10, Pg. 8). (Only one Screw is shown). 2. Check to insure that the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7) has no End-Play, back and forth in the Boss. If play occurs, loosen the two Set Screws (Item 10, Pg. 8) in the Sprocket (Item 23 or 23-M, Pg. 8). A. Push in on Hub of the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7) making sure that it is sitting against the Brass Bushing (Item 21 or 21-L, Pg. 7) of the Gland or Gland Boss. B. Make sure that the Sprocket is sitting against the Shims and tighten the two Set Screws. C. Recheck for endplay. Re-do the above steps if needed. If there is no endplay, rotate the Sprocket, checking for free rotation of the Inch Dial Shaft and Sprocket. 4

Installing The Tape Keeper The Tape Keeper Prevents the Tape from jumping off of the Sprocket. Tape is.010 thick. A maximum distance (.040 to.050) between the Tape Keeper and Sprocket should be maintained. 1. Install the Tape Keeper, Post and Screw (Item 7, 8, 9, Pg. 8). Check to insure that the Tape Keeper is not too tight or too loose. Remove and make adjustments to the Keeper at this time. Also See Tape Installation Drawing for Tape Keeper location. A. The Tape Keeper Should not bind against the Sprocket. The Tape must pass between the Tape Keeper and Sprocket freely. The Keeper may be bent slightly outwards away from the Sprocket if too tight. Make adjustments to the Keeper at this time. B. If the Keeper is too loose, remove the Screw, Keeper and Post. Bend both sides of the Keeper towards the Sprocket. Re-install the three pieces and make adjustments at this time. C. The Sprocket should rotate freely. The Tape Keeper should not bind on the head of the Screw. Final Assembling of the Counter Assembly 1. Rotate the Foot Wheel (Item 60, Pg. 7) until two numbers (Example 39, See Drawing 2434-1) are aligned in their small windows. Place the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) on its Shaft and into the tooth of the Foot Wheel (Item 60, Pg. 7). Place the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13-M, Pg. 7) on the Hub of the Inch Dial Shaft (Item 11, Pg. 7). Rotate the tooth of the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13-M, Pg. 7) past the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) to insure that the Foot Wheel (Item 60, Pg. 7) rotates to the next number in full view. If the number falls between two numbers, remove the Dial and Pinion Gear, rotate the Foot Wheel (Item 60, Pg. 7) one tooth and reinstall the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7). Rotate the tooth of the Dial Gear (Item 13 or 13M, Pg. 7) past the Pinion Gear (Item 14, Pg. 7) to insure that the Foot Wheel rotates to the next number in full view. Repeat above steps if necessary. 2. Install the Inch Dial, Decimal or Metric Dial (Item 36, 37, etc, Pg. 7) along with the Retainer Ring (Item 12, Pg. 7) and the three screws (Item 34, Pg. 7). Tighten the three screws at this time. 3. Install the Counter Cover and Gasket (Items 43, 42, Pg. 7) with two screws (Item 45, Pg. 7). This will prevent damage to the Counter and Dial while you are installing the remaining parts to the Gauge. 5

Installing The Tape Storage Sheave Assembly (TSSA) Alignment of the TSSA and Sprocket will let the Punched Measuring Tape run freely between the two items! The correct alignment of the Sprocket and TSSA is the pin in the TSSA and the teeth in the Sprocket; these are the true center on both items. 1. Install and tighten both Shafts if they were removed for cleaning (Item 46, Pg. 8). 2. With the correct number of Shims (Items 35, 25, 24 etc, Pg. 8) installed, the edge of the TSSA (Item 52, Pg. 8) next to the Sprocket will be slightly higher than the edge of the Sprocket (Item 23 or 23-M), you can feel this slight difference with your thumb. Add or remove Shims at this time. The white or black Hub should be mounted on the TSSA. 3. With the TSSA (Item 52, Pg. 8) in place, install a Teflon Shim (Item 35, Pg. 8) on the shaft along with the metal Shims (Item 24, 25, etc. Pg. 8) up to the point where the Snap Ring is to be installed, install the Snap Ring (Item 47, Pg. 8). The TSSA should have a little play (back and forth on the shaft) but not an excessive amount; it should also rotate freely. Add or remove Shims if required. Installing The Negator Motor 1. Install the 7/8 long Brass Bushing (Item 69, Pg. 8) on the shaft along with the Shims (Items 24 & 35, Pg. 8). 2. Install the Inner Flange (Item 50, Pg. 8). If this Flange hits or rubs the TSSA, remove it and add Shims until it clears. 3. Install these items in order; Inner Flange (Item 50, Pg. 8) Negator Motor with Plastic Hub (Item 48-P & 49, Pg. 8), Outer Flange (Item 50, Pg. 8) along with the Shims (Items 35, 24, Pg. 8) up to the point where the Snap Ring (Item 47, Pg. 8) is to be installed. Install the Snap Ring (Item 47, Pg. 8). The Negator Motor (Item 48-P & 49, Pg. 8) should have a little play (back and forth on the shaft) but not an excessive amount; it should also rotate freely. Add or remove Shims if required. 4. Fasten the end of the Negator Motor (Item 48-P & 49, Pg. 8) to the HUB of the TSSA (Item 52, Pg. 8) with the 8-32 x 3/8 screw (Item 34, Pg. 8). 5. Check to insure that all Items are installed correctly and all items are in place. 6. Install the Gasket, Back Cover and Bolts along with the Gasket, Counter Cover and Bolts IF THE GAUGE IS TO BE INSTALLED AT TANK SITE, SEE THE GAUGE KIT INSTALLATION MANUAL FOR INSTALLATION PROCEDURES. 6
