Volvo construction equipment Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Certified quality. Volvo Construction Equipment Tier 4 Final engines use DEF in combination with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce emissions. Quality assured solution The Volvo recommended DEF solution is quality assured and safe to use ensuring machine components are protected, fuel efficiency is optimized and emissions are minimized. Using other, low-quality solutions could damage the after treatment system and result in reduced torque, speed and eventual machine shutdown. Unnecessary costs and downtime can easily be avoided by using the Volvo approved solution. = registered trademark of the Verband der Automobilindustrie e.v. (VDA).
questions and answers. 1 What is DEF? The non-toxic solution is based on 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. Urea is a compound of nitrogen that turns to ammonia when heated. The fluid is known as AdBlue in Europe/Asia and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in North America. Why is DEF needed? 2 It is a reactant key to the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process used in Tier 4 Final. Where is DEF available from? 3 The DEF solution can be ordered via the Volvo dealer network where it can either be collected or delivered directly to the job site. 4 How is DEF packaged? DEF is delivered in sealed, dedicated containers including cans and drums or in bulk to suit individual customer needs. 5 What happens if you use a low-quality substitute instead of DEF? Using low-quality substitutes could damage the after treatment system and result in reduced torque, speed and eventual machine shutdown. Unnecessary costs and downtime can easily be avoided by using the Volvo approved solution. 6 How is the quality of DEF guaranteed? The DEF solution has high purity requirements defined by ISO 22241-1. This ensures correct manufacturing, testing and handling procedures.
7 Does low outside temperature affect DEF? DEF freezes at 12 F. The SCR system heats the DEF tank and supply lines. If the fluid freezes when the machine is not in use, start-up and operation will not be affected. The SCR heating system will defrost the solution back to liquid form without affecting quality. 8 How should DEF be stored and what is the shelf life of the solution? DEF should be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Recommended storage temperature is up to 77 F, although short term exposure to higher temperatures will not cause damage. If DEF is stored in the recommended way it will last for approximately two years. 9 Why is it important to use equipment that is dedicated to DEF? Dedicated DEF equipment must be used for dispensing and storing the solution to prevent contamination. 10 Is DEF corrosive? The non-toxic solution is corrosive to certain sensitive metals such as copper. What is DEF consumption? 11 Approximately between 5% and 7.5% of fuel consumption, depending on the machine type and application.

volvo construction equipment Volvo Construction Equipment is different. Our machines are designed, built and supported in a different way. That difference comes from an engineering heritage of over 180 years. A heritage of thinking first about the people who actually use the machines. About how to help them be safer, more comfortable, more productive. About the environment we all share. The result of that thinking is a growing range of machines and a global support network dedicated to helping you do more. People around the world are proud to use Volvo. Not all products are available in all markets. Under our policy of continuous improvement, we reserve the right to change specifications and design without prior notice.
