New to Donges Bay: Sport Stacking! What is it? Sport stacking is an individual and team sport that involves stacking specialized plastic cups in specific sequences in as little time as possible. The governing body setting the rules is the WSSA (World Sport Stacking Association). In PE class, we combine sport stacking with fitness based activities to help motivate students to be active and fit. What are the benefits? It s FUN! Improves hand/eye coordination Increases speed and concentration Increases ambidexterity Uses both sides of your brain Has been proven to increase reading test scores Increases reflex speed by 30% on average Promotes good sportsmanship Interesting facts: o Sport Stacking is a Junior Olympic Sport. You can compete as an individual or in doubles with a partner. o Kids as young as 3 years old learn to speed stack o Check out the World Records for the 3-3-3 stack below! OT CORNER / January 2015 Hi Everyone, I hope we are all in the swing of the New Year. I want to congratulate your children on making an effort to Sit Strong. I also want to thank you, as parents, for encouraging your child/children. I visited all the classrooms in December with a message about exercises to work on hand dexterity including, finger to thumb, pencil crawls, eraser flips, and moving items about in your hand. These are all exercises that require in hand manipulation. In hand manipulation requires one part of the hand to be active and the other part of the hand to hold and is necessary for coordinated use of the hand. The students received the cutouts of a paintbrush for an artist and a musical note for a musician. These are both jobs where you need to Sit Strong or Stand Tall. This month I will be stressing left-handedness. When your children who are left handed write, they should hold the tablet tilted 35-45 degrees to the left. It places their writing arm in a natural position to be able to write on the lines as they move left to right, without having to excessively hook their wrist. Use of a slant board may also assist them. Like a right-handed child, a left-handed child should also hold the pencil in a tripod grasp, (pinch pencil with index finger and thumb, rest it on the middle finger). This will help develop dynamic finger movements and proper wrist position. However a left-handed student needs to grasp the pencil about 1 to 1.5 inches above the tip of the pencil. If they move their fingers up on the pencil, this allows them to see what they are writing, so they are less likely to have to hook their wrist, in order to have a good view. This should also help them to prevent smudging their writing. If your child keeps forgetting or doesn t know where to put their fingers, put a small sticker at the height they should pinch the pencil, in order to provide a visual cue. Encourage your child to use their right hand as a helper hand to hold down the paper. The more consistently they stabilize their paper, the less likely it is to slide around and cause frustration. When cutting, I recommend using Fiskars scissors, either blunt or pointed handle depending on the age of the child. They are available at Target, Shopko, Walmart, etc. You do not need to order left-handed scissors because these cut either way. Remember that a child who is left-handed needs to cut around a shape starting on the left side of the shape so they are cutting clockwise and a right handed child needs to start cutting on the right side of the paper, or counterclockwise. This prevents them from crossing over their body which makes cutting awkward. With younger children, be sure to focus on activities that encourage the child to pinch with the thumb and index finger (strengthening those tripod muscles), coordinate the use of the right and left hands together (cutting goes in this category), and generally develop the foundational fine motor strength and skill needed for later writing. Thanks for reading my article and will talk to you in February when I will discuss ways to learn letters or improve letter writing without holding a pencil. Joan Tuttle, OTR

We Need Morning Drop Off Volunteers!! We are in need of increased volunteer support for morning drop off duty. Wisconsin winters result in increased traffic in the mornings as well as students arriving heavily burdened with their appropriate winter gear. Additional volunteers assisting students should help to ease the flow of traffic through the parking lot. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up through VolunteerSpot. Here's how it works in 3 easy steps: 1. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot: http://vols.pt/8ramce 2. Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on VolunteerSpot) 3. Sign up! Choose your spots - VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy! Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you prefer not to use your email address, please contact me and I can sign you up manually. Thank you so much to Mr. Burg, Mrs. S. Braun and all of the parent volunteers as well as our 5 th grade crossing guards who help to ensure the safety of our students every morning!
