TO- 37 TRAILER AND ACCESSORIES. General The purpose of the four-wheel trailer (Fig. ) is to add mobility to an electric, motor-driven generator set. This manual is supplemental to the basic generator set technical manual (T-M) which covers the generator set only. CABLE HANGER PARKING LEVER BRAKE CABLE HANGER Trailer-Mounted Generator Set Figure. Description The trailer and accessories consist of front and rear assemblies, cable hangers, cable clamps and brackets, and various plates for mounting brake controls. The trailer is rated at 0 000 pounds (4 56 kg) capacity. Trailer axle and spring assemblies are mounted directly to the generator set main frame, thus avoiding the use of a trailer frame. Springs are semielliptic leaf type. Ott II79 Page
TO- 37 The front axle assembly consists of a solid axle with spindles and steering linkage, and a drawbar which may be folded upward when not in use. A spring-loaded latching bracket secures the drawbar in vertical position when the equipment is not being towed. Steering linkage is designed to prevent damage to tie rods, etc., if the trailer is turned too sharply. The rear axle is solid with internal drum type mechanically operated brakes. Hydraulic actuating cylinders are not functional in this installation. Brakes are operated by cables and an adjustable hand lever mounted at the forward left corner of the generator set frame. All wheel bearings are roller type. Standard tires are pneumatic, tube type, 0 ply, 8.75 by 6.5 inch size. See Fig. for trailer specifications. Preparation for Use Upon delivery, check the unit thoroughly for shipping damage. A. Check all glass. B. Check tires for cuts and proper inflation. C. Check operation of parking brakes. D. Check sheet metal for dents, etc. E. Check generator set per basic TM Manual. Page Ott II79
TO-37 4. Operation To connect trailer to tow vehicle A. Support drawbar and pull UP on latch lever to unlatch. WARNING: EXERCISE CARE TO PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONNEL BY A FALLING DRAWBAR. B. Connect drawbar to tow vehicle hitch. C. Release parking brake. Push lever handle INWARD toward frame to release. To Tow Trailer CAUTION:. DO NOT TOW TRAILER FASTER THAN 0 MPH.. AVOID SUDDEN STARTS, STOPS, AND TURNS. 3. DO NOT ATTEMPT TURNS WHICH ARE TIGHTER THAN THE VEHICLE COMBINATION IS CAPABLE OF MAKING FREELY (WITHOUT CRAMPING). To Disconnect Trailer from Tow Vehicle Apply parking brake. Pull handle forward and inward. Lever handle will point directly forward when brakes are applied, and lever mechanism is locked in ON position. Disconnect drawbar from towing hitch. Lift drawbar toward a vertical position until latch engages securely. BE SURE DRAWBAR IS SAFELY LATCHED BEFORE RELEASING. 5. Maintenance A. Lubrication (I) General Most lubrication points, such as spring shackle bolts, tie rod ends, etc., are equipped with high-pressure lubrication fittings. Refer to Figs. 3,4, and 5 for lubrication chart, lubricants, and time intervals. () Cleanliness It is important that all grease fittings be cleaned before attaching a grease gun or applicator. Use a clean cloth to wipe dirt from fittings. (3) Grease application Place pressure gun securely on the fitting, so that there is no leakage between fitting and applicator. Apply pressure until old grease is forced out and new grease appears. This will insure that the grease cavity has been filled with clean grease and that old, contaminated grease has been forced out. Ott II79 Page 3
TO- 37 Use an oil can to lubricate points such as brake linkage, etc., which are not equipped with grease fittings. Avery light grease may also be used if it is preferred to lubricating oil. Remove wheels to check wheel bearing lubricant. TO- 37 C. Wheel Bearings Check wheel bearings as follows: () Raise vehicle until wheels are clear of floor. () Grasp the top side of the tire with one hand, and the bottom with the other hand. Push at the top and pull at the bottom alternately to check for looseness in the bearings. If looseness is felt, adjust bearings. NOTE: Do not misinterpret looseness in front axle spindle bushings for wheel bearing looseness. D. Adjust Wheel Bearings () Remove hub cap. The cap is not threaded. () Remove cotter pin and tighten slotted nut until snug (not tight). (3) Install a new cotter pin. Back nut off slightly if necessary to install pin. (4) Check the wheel again for looseness. The wheel should turn freely without noise or looseness. (5) Install hub cap. Drive the cap in place with a non-metallic hammer. E. Parking Brake Hand Lever Adjustment Parking brake application pressure is adjustable by a knob located on the end of the lever handle. To adjust, proceed as follows: (I) Place brake lever handle in released position. () Turn brake handle knob clockwise to increase application pressure. Turn counterclockwise to decrease pressure. (3) Adjust knob so that handle may be pulled into locked, ON position without exerting excessive effort. F. Brake Shoe Adjustment Brake shoes are adjustable by a starwheel adjusting nut arrangement such as used on some automobiles and trucks. () Raise vehicle until rear wheels clear floor. () Remove dust cover from adjuster access hole in brake backing plate. (3) Use a brake adjusting tool or large screwdriver to rotate starwheel adjusting nut until a heavy drag is felt when the wheel is rotated. (4) Back off adjusting nut until wheel turns freely. (5) Replace dust cover. Page 6 Ott II79
