A persn shall nt perate n any highway, except thse highways designated by the secretary f transprtatin under the prvisins f KRS 189.222, r thse lcally maintained highways under

the prvisins f KRS 189.222(11) r KRS 189.230(4), any f the fllwing trucks, trailers, manufactured hmes, r vehicles: (1) Any mtr truck, semitrailer, trailer, manufactured hme, r vehicle which exceeds eleven and ne-half (11-1/2) feet in height r ninety-six (96) inches in width, including any part f the bdy r lad; (2) Any mtr truck, except a semitrailer truck, which exceeds twenty-six and ne half (26-1/2) feet in length, including any part f the bdy r lad; (3) Any semitrailer truck which exceeds thirty (30) feet in length, including any part f the bdy r lad; (4) Any truck, semitrailer truck, r truck and trailer unit which exceeds 36,000 punds grss weight, including the lad; (5) Any truck, semitrailer truck, r tractr-trailer unit which exceeds a grss weight equal t the sum f six hundred (600) punds per inch f the cmbined width f the tires upn which the vehicle may be prpelled, but n mre than thirty-six thusand (36,000) punds. (6) Ntwithstanding the prvisins f this sectin, any truck hauling building materials under KRS 189.2226, r t a rad cnstructin prject n a highway rated less than the maximum weight prvided abve, may haul up t eighty thusand (80,000) punds grss weight, including the lad, withut a permit. 189.222 Increased height, length, and weight limits n designated highways -- Exceptins -- Cabinet may prmulgate administrative regulatins t implement 23 C.F.R. Part 658 -- Restrictin f cabinet's enfrcement pwers n lcally maintained rads. (1) Except as prvided in subsectin (2) f this sectin, the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet in respect t highways which are a part f the state maintained system, by fficial rder, may increase n designated highways r prtins theref, the maximum height, length, and grss weight prescribed in KRS 189.221, if in the pinin f the secretary, the increased height, length, and weight designated by him are justified by the strength, safety, and durability f the designated highways, and the highways d nt appear susceptible t unreasnable and unusual damage by reasn f the increases and the secretary may establish reasnable classificatin f state maintained rads and fix a different maximum fr each classificatin. Any increase in the height, length, r width f any mtr truck r tractr semitrailer cmbinatins r any ther vehicle cmbinatins including any part f the bdy r lad r designatin f highways t be used by the vehicles, shall nt, in any way, exceed the federal law r regulatins thereunder r jepardize the alltment r qualificatin fr federal aid funds f the Cmmnwealth f Kentucky r exceed the fllwing dimensins and weights:

(a) Height, thirteen and ne-half (13-1/2) feet; (b) Length, semitrailers, fifty-three (53) feet; trailers, twenty-eight (28) feet; mtr trucks, frtyfive (45) feet, nt t exceed tw (2) trailers per truck tractr; (c) Weight, twenty thusand (20,000) punds per single axle, with axles less than frty-tw (42) inches apart t be cnsidered as a single axle; thirty-fur thusand (34,000) punds n tw (2) axles in tandem arrangement which are spaced frty-tw (42) inches r mre apart and less than ninety-six (96) inches apart; frty-eight thusand (48,000) punds n three (3) axles which are spaced frty-tw (42) inches r mre apart and less than ne hundred twenty (120) inches apart. N single axle in any arrangement shall exceed twenty thusand (20,000) punds r seven hundred (700) punds per inch f the aggregate width f all the tires n a single axle, whichever is less. The ttal grss weight f the vehicle and lad shall nt exceed eighty thusand (80,000) punds; (d) Except n the interstate highway system, a tlerance f nt mre than five percent (5%) per axle lad shall be permitted befre a carrier is deemed t have vilated paragraph (c) f this subsectin. The grss weight shall nt exceed eighty thusand (80,000) punds; (e) Except as prvided fr in paragraph (f) f this subsectin, truck tractr, semitrailer and trailer cmbinatins, and ther vehicle cmbinatins may be perated nly n the interstate system and n thse parts f the federal aid highway system and the state-maintained system which have been designated by the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet by fficial rder as safely allwing same; (f) A vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles that is ne hundred tw (102) inches wide r less and has a grss weight f nt mre than eighty thusand (80,000) punds may be driven n any state highway, fr a distance f up t fifteen (15) miles frm an interstate r parkway exit. (2) In additin t the prvisins f KRS 189.2226, vehicles with a grss weight f up t eighty thusand (80,000) punds may travel n any state highway in the Cmmnwealth withut btaining a special permit, if the weight des nt exceed any limits mandated by federal law r regulatin, any psted bridge weight limit, r the weight limits fr the size and type f vehicle established under paragraph (c) f subsectin (1) f this sectin, and if the vehicle is transprting any f the fllwing: (a) Meats r agricultural crp prducts riginating frm a farm t first market; (b) Livestck r pultry frm their pint f rigin t first market; (c) Primary frest prducts, including, but nt limited t, sawdust, wd chips, bark, slabs, r lgs riginating frm their pints f rigin t first market; r (d) Supplies, materials, r equipment necessary t carry ut a farming peratin engaged in the prductin f agricultural crp prducts, meats, livestck, r pultry. (3) Vehicles registered under KRS 186.050(4)(b) that are engaged exclusively in the transprtatin f items listed in subsectin (2)(a), (b), and (c) f this sectin may exceed the

grss weight prvisins set frth in subsectin (1)(c) f this sectin by a weight tlerance f ten percent (10%), except n the interstate highway system. (4) Vehicles exclusively engaged in the transprtatin f mtr vehicles, unmanufactured tbacc, r unmanufactured tbacc prducts may, n thse highways which are a part f the state-maintained system and which have been designated by the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet by fficial rder as safely allwing same, attain the maximum lengths as prvided by subsectin (1)(b) f this sectin, excluding the usual and rdinary bumper verhang f the transprted vehicles. (5) Vehicles engaged exclusively in the transprtatin f farm r primary frestry prducts and registered under KRS 186.050(4) r 186.050(9) and vehicles engaged exclusively in the transprtatin f ready-mixed cncrete shall be excluded frm the axle weight prvisins, except n interstate highways, and subject nly t ttal grss weight prvisins. (6) Vehicles registered pursuant t KRS 186.050(3)(b) and engaged in the transprtatin f primary frest prducts, including, but nt limited t, vehicles transprting sawdust, wd chips, bark, slabs, r lgs, may exceed the axle, r grss weight prvisins as set frth in accrdance with subsectin (1)(c) f this sectin by a weight tlerance f ten percent (10%), except n the interstate highway system. (7) Vehicles designed fr and engaged exclusively in the cllectin and hauling f refuse and registered under KRS 186.050(3)(b) shall be excluded frm the axle weight prvisins, except when in peratin n the federal interstate system, and subject nly t ttal grss weight prvisins. (8) The secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet may by rder increase the weight and height limits prescribed by this chapter fr mtr vehicles while being perated exclusively n rads r highways being cnstructed, recnstructed, r repaired under cntract with the Transprtatin Cabinet by the cntractr r subcntractr, agent, r emplyee theref. (9) Except as therwise prvided in this chapter, the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet shall nt authrize the peratin f any vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles, upn any part f the federal aid highway system r state parkway system, which exceeds the fllwing dimensins and weights: (a) Width, ne hundred tw Kentucky: 189.010 Definitins fr chapter. (9) Except as therwise prvided in this chapter, the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet shall nt authrize the peratin f any vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles, upn any part f the federal aid highway system r state parkway system, which exceeds the fllwing dimensins and weights: (a) Width, ne hundred tw (102) inches, including any part f the bdy r lad; (b) Weight, twenty thusand (20,000) punds per single axle, with axles less than frty-tw (42) inches apart t be cnsidered as a single axle; thirty-fur thusand (34,000) punds n tw (2) axles in tandem arrangement which are spaced frty-tw (42) inches r mre apart and less than ninety-six (96) inches apart; frty-eight thusand (48,000) punds n three (3) axles which are spaced frty-tw (42) inches r mre apart and less than ne hundred twenty (120) inches apart. The ttal grss weight f the vehicle and lad shall nt exceed eighty thusand (80,000) punds. If any federal law r laws r regulatins thereunder are hereafter enacted authrizing weights and dimensins in excess f thse set ut in paragraphs (a) and (b) f this subsectin, the secretary f the Transprtatin Cabinet may by fficial rder increase the maximum weights and dimensins but the increased weights and dimensins shall nt exceed thse set ut in this sectin. (10) Except n the interstate highway system, vehicles engaged exclusively in the transprtatin f crushed stne, fill dirt and rck, sil, bulk sand, cal, phsphate muck, asphalt, cncrete, slid waste, tankage r animal residues, livestck, and agricultural prducts shall be permitted a tlerance f ten percent (10%) f the axle weight prvisins befre a carrier is deemed t have vilated paragraph (1)(c) f this sectin. (11) The Transprtatin Cabinet may prmulgate administrative regulatins pursuant t KRS Chapter 13A, relating t the implementatin f 23 C.F.R. Part 658 as it relates t statemaintained r lcally maintained rads. The enfrcement f the prvisins f KRS 189.221 and this sectin n lcally maintained rads shall nt be the respnsibility f the law enfrcement fficers f the Transprtatin Cabinet, unless the head f the crrespnding lcal gvernment unit has requested, in writing, enfrcement assistance frm the Transprtatin Cabinet.

(1) N wner shall knwingly perate r permit t be perated n a highway a mtr vehicle upn which the brakes are defective. (2) Every mtr vehicle, ther than a mtrcycle, when perated upn a highway shall be equipped with brakes adequate t cntrl the mvement f and t stp and hld the vehicle. There shall be tw (2) separate means f applying the brakes, each f which means shall be effective t apply the brakes t at least tw (2) wheels. If the tw (2) separate means are cnnected in any way, they shall be s cnstructed that failure f any ne (1) part f the perating mechanism shall nt leave the mtr vehicle withut brakes n at least tw (2) wheels. (3) (a) Except fr cmmercial mtr vehicles with a declared grss vehicle weight f mre the ten thusand (10,000) punds, the service brakes upn any mtr vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles shall be adequate t stp the vehicle when traveling twenty (20) miles per hur within a distance f frty (40) feet when

(b) Under the cnditins described in subsectin (3)(a), the hand brake shall be adequate t stp the vehicle within a distance f fifty-five (55) feet and the hand brake shall be adequate t hld the vehicle statinary n any grade upn which it is perated. (c) Under the cnditins described in subsectin (3)(a), the service brakes upn a mtr vehicle equipped with tw (2)-wheel brakes nly shall be adequate t stp the vehicle within a distance f frty (40) feet and the hand brake adequate t stp the vehicle within a distance f fifty-five (55) feet. (d) All braking distances specified in this sectin shall apply whether r nt the vehicles are laded t the maximum capacity permitted by law. (e) All brakes shall be maintained in gd wrking rder and shall be s adjusted as t perate with equal effect with respect t the wheels n ppsite sides f the vehicle. (4) A persn shall nt perate any cmmercial mtr vehicle with a declared grss weight f ver ten thusand (10,000) punds n any highway in this state unless it is equipped with efficient brakes that meet the federal mtr carrier safety standards in 49 C.F.R. pt. 393 and may be perated by the peratr f the vehicle. vehicle which is an implement f husbandry when mving frm field t field. 189.060. Lights n vehicles in tw and prjectins Mtr vehicle used as twing unit. (1) Each vehicle twed by a twline shall display the lights required n vehicles f the class t which it belngs. (2) Each vehicle being hauled by anther and cnnected t it in a manner that will keep them unifrmly spaced shall carry at least ne (1) light n the left side in such a manner as t shw an amber light t the frnt and a red light t the rear visible at least ne thusand (1,000) feet away. (3) When any part f a lad prjects mre than fur (4) feet beynd a vehicle, tw (2) red flags by day and tw (2) red lights during the perid prvided in KRS 189.030 must be placed upn the extremity f the prjectin marking the width f the verhang. (4) Any mtr vehicle used as a twing unit where tw (2) lamps displaying red lights are nt bscured by the twed unit r its lad may be equipped with tw (2) lamps displaying red lights n the twed unit, the twing unit, r bth.

(1) Except as prvided in subsectin (4) f this sectin, every mtr vehicle shall be equipped with the fllwing mirrrs s lcated and adjusted as t reflect t the driver a view f the highway t the rear f the vehicle: (a) One (1) mirrr munted n the left side f the vehicle; and (b) One (1) mirrr munted either inside the vehicle apprximately in the center r n the right side f the vehicle. (2) N persn shall, by himself r thrugh his agent r servant, perate a mtr vehicle upn the highways withut the equipment required by subsectin (1). Each day f peratin withut the equipment shall cnstitute a separate ffense. (3) N persn shall sell, barter, r therwise dispse f any mtr vehicle described in subsectin (1) unless it is equipped with a mirrr as prvided in that subsectin. (4) A mtrcycle shall be required nly t have the mirrr identified a paragraph (a) f subsectin (1) f this sectin.
