THREE SIDES OF THE STORY Stopping, steering and stability form the three sides of what Monroe call the safety triangle three things essential to your safety on and off the road. If any part of the safety triangle stops working properly, you will be putting yourself and others at real risk. STOPPING At 50km/h, just one worn shock absorber can increase your stopping distance by up to 2 metres! STEERING Worn shock absorbers can cause your tyres to lose contact with the road, dramatically affecting steering. STABILITY Worn shock absorbers cause excessive sway around corners, making the car a lot less stable. MON19379 DL Bro Everything gets old ƒ.indd 2
WHAT ARE SHOCK ABSORBERS? Shock absorbers are quite possibly the most misunderstood part of any vehicle s essential systems. As well as the three sides of the safety triangle Stopping Steering Stability your shock absorbers also influence tyre life and ride comfort. Simply put, shock absorbers help to control the movement of your vehicle s springs and suspension. They play an important role in your vehicle s ability to accelerate, travel and stop with safety and control. WHAT DO THEY DO? Essentially, shock absorbers do two things. They control the movement of springs and suspension as well as keeping your tyres in contact with the ground at all times. Any time that a tyre s contact with the ground is broken or reduced, your ability to drive, steer and brake is severely compromised. MON19379 DL Bro Everything gets old ƒ.indd 3
THE SIGNS OF WORN SHOCK ABSORBERS Although the best way to test your shock absorbers is through a workshop and road test by a qualified technician, there are some very distinctive signs of excessive shock absorber wear and tear you can keep an eye out for. SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL Notice that your car rock and rolls over bumps, railway tracks or uneven surfaces? Not hugging the bends? Time to get those shock absorbers checked then! BAD VIBES Uncomfortable steering wheel vibration could be shock absorbers. TROUBLE STOPPING Worn shock absorbers can add as much as 20% to your stopping distance. That s the sort of fault that can be fatal and requires immediate attention. SIDE SLIDE If your car veers in side winds, particularly when the wind isn t so strong, you could have shock absorber problems. NOSE DIVING AND SWERVING If the bonnet of your car dips when you brake or slow. UNEVEN TYRE WEAR If your tyres are wearing unevenly, particularly if there are bald patches, odds are it s your shock absorbers. MON19379 DL Bro Everything gets old ƒ.indd 4
JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE The way you drive, where you drive, what you drive, the loads you carry, the weather many things can impact on shock absorber life. As a precaution, Monroe and other leading automotive experts recommend that you have a trained specialist inspect your shock absorbers for signs of wear every 20,000km. DRIVEN BY SAFETY To Monroe, safety is just as important as how our products perform. Since the 1920s, we ve mirrored the development of the automobile with more responsive, safer and technically advanced shock absorber designs. Many Monroe products incorporate world first and patented technologies. Monroe s reputation for technology driven safety has made us the most popular and trusted brand of shock absorbers. THE RIGHT SHOCK ABSORBER FOR YOU AND YOUR VEHICLE There are a few musts when it comes to fitting the right shock absorbers to your vehicle. The key is talking to your Monroe Safety Specialist. So, here s a quick, expert guide to the most commonly recommended products in the Monroe range: GT-GAS with exclusive Reflex TM Technology With superior twin disc technology, this nitrogen gas pressurised shock absorber reacts faster to road conditions, making rides safer and smoother for sedans and wagons. GAS-MAGNUM TDT Gas charged and specifically designed for off road use, this rugged shock absorber is ideal for most 4WD vehicles and light commercials. GAS RISER Designed to cope with heavy loads, this gas pressurised shock absorber is designed to stabilise loads, prevent tail drag and improve road handling when towing or carrying a load. Ideal for vehicles towing boats, caravans and heavy trailers. MAX-LIFT Max-Lift is a sealed, gas filled pressure cylinder that exerts an outward force that acts like a spring to lift and hold open hatches, bonnets and boots. An exact replacement fit for most applications. STRUT MATE Protection Kit Too often when a strut or cartridge is replaced, the old compression bumper and dust boot is refitted. The Monroe Strut Mate kit makes sure all components are new and includes a new compression bumper, dust boot, retaining strap and fitting instructions. Mounting Kit GT SPORT Designed with control and quality in mind, GT Sport achieves the desirable look of a lowered vehicle profile while providing optimum performance and control. Monroe Struts and strut mounts, or bearing plates are critical to your vehicle s suspension. Replacing upper ball joints in strut-equipped vehicles, strut mounts help the strut isolate road vibrations and create smoother steering. MON19379 DL Bro Everything gets old ƒ.indd 6
