To guarantee electrical safety, the machine must not be damp or operated in a damp environment. The user bears the responsibility for damage and accidents caused by improper use. GB 5 Safety instructions 5.1 General safety instructions WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool. 5.2 Machine-related safety instructions This power tool is intended to function as a polisher. Read all saftey warnings, instructions, illustrations and specification provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in elektric shock, fire and/or serious injury. Operations such as grinding, sanding, wire brushing or cutting-of are not recommended to be performed with this power tool. Operations for wich the power tool was not designed may create hazard and cause personal injury. Do not use accessories which are not specially designed and recommended by Festool. Just because the accessory can be attached to your power tool, it does not assure safe operation. The rates speed of the accessory must be at least equal to the maximum speed marked in the power tool. Accessories running faster than their rated speed can break and fly apart. The outside diameter and the thickness of your accessory must be within the capacity rating of your power tool. Incorrectly sized accessories cannot be adequately guarded or controlled. The arbour size of wheels, flanges, backing pads or any other accessory must properly fit the spindle of the power tool. Accessories with arbour holes that do not match the mounting hardware of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control. Do not use a damaged accessory. Before each use inspect the accessory such as abrasive wheels for chips and cracks, backing pad for cracks, tear or 11

GB excess wear, wire brush for loose or cracked wires. If power tool or accessory is dropped, inspect for damage or install an undamaged accessory. After inspecting and installing an accessory, position yourself and bystanders away from the plane of the rotating accessory and run the power tool at maximum no-load speed for one minute. Damaged accessories will normally break apart during this test time. Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors, gloves and workshop apron capable of stopping small abrasive or workpiece fragments. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. The dust mask or respirator must be capable of filtrating particles generated by your operation. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss. Keep bystanders a safe distance away from work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of workpiece or of a broken accessory may fly away and cause injury beyond immediate area of operation. Position the cord clear of the spinning accessory. If you lose control, the cord may be cut or snagged and your hand or arm may be pulled into the spinning accessory. Never lay the power tool down until the accessory has come to a complete stop. The spinning accessory may grab the surface and pull the power tool out of your control. Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact with the spinning accessory could snag your clothing, pulling the accessory into your body. Regularly clean the power tool s air vents. The motor s fan will draw the dust inside the housing and excessive accumulation of powdered metal may cause electrical hazards. Do not operate the power tool near flammable materials. Sparks could ignite these materials. Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. Using water or other liquid coolants may result in electrocution or shock. Kickback and Related Warnings Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel, backing pad, brush or any other accessory. Pinching or snagging causes rapid stalling of the rotating accessory which in turn causes the uncontrolled power tool to be forced in the direction opposite of the accessory s rotation at the point of the binding. For example, if an abrasive wheel is snagged or pinched by the workpiece, the edge of the wheel that is entering into the pinch point can dig into the surface of the material causing the wheel to climb out or kick out. The wheel may either jump toward or away from the operator, depending on direction of the wheel s movement at the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also break under these conditions. Kickback is the result of power tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below. Maintain a firm grip on the power tool and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Always use auxiliary handle, if provided, for maximum control over kickback or torque reaction during start-up. The operator can control torque reactions or kickback forces, if proper precautions are taken. Never place your hand near the rotating accessory. Accessory may kickback over your hand. Do not position your body in the area where power tool will move if kickback occurs. Kickback will propel the tool in direction opposite to the wheel s movement at the point of snagging. Use special care when working corners, sharp edges etc. Avoid bouncing and snagging the accessory. Corners, sharp edges or bouncing have a tendency to snag 12

the rotating accessory and cause loss of control or kickback. Do not attach a saw chain woodcarving blade or toothed saw blade. Such blades create frequent kickback and loss of control. Safety Warnings Specific for Polishing Operations Do not allow any loose portion of the polishing bonnet or its attachment strings to spin freely. Tuck away or trim any loose attachment strings. Loose and spinning attachment strings can entangle your fingers or snag on the workpiece. Prevent liquid polish from entering the machine. The penetration of liquid polish into the electric power tool increases the risk of an electric shock. 5.3 Emission levels Levels determined in accordance with EN 60745 are typically: Sound pressure level Noise level Measuring uncertainty allowance CAUTION Operating noise Damage to hearing Use ear protection! L PA = 81 db(a) L WA = 92 db(a) K = 3 db Vibration emission value a h (vector sum for three directions) and uncertainty K measured in accordance with EN 60745: Machine housing a h < 2,5 m/s 2 K = 1,5 m/s 2 Additional handle a h < 2,5 m/s 2 K = 1,5 m/s 2 The specified emissions values (vibration, noise) are used to compare machines. They are also used for making preliminary estimates regarding vibration and noise loads during operation. They represent the primary applications of the power tool. GB Increase possible for other applications, with other insertion tools or if not maintained adequately. Take note of idling and downtimes of machine! 6 Operation The switch [1-4] is an on/off switch (press = ON, release = OFF). The locking button [1-3] can be engaged to operate in continuous mode. Press the switch again to release the knob. 7 Settings WARNING Unauthorised voltage or frequency! Risk of accident The mains voltage and the frequency of the power source must correspond with the specifications on the machine's name plate. In North America, only Festool machines with the voltage specifications 120 V/60 Hz may be used. WARNING Risk of injury, electric shock Always pull the plug out of the socket before performing any type of work on the machine! 7.1 Electronics The machine features full-wave electronics with the following features: Smooth start-up The electronically controlled smooth start-up ensures that the machine starts up jolt-free. Speed control The speed reached when the switch [1-4] is pressed all the way in can be set to between 600 and 2100 rpm using the adjusting wheel [1-2]. This enables you to optimise the cutting speed to suit the surface (see table). The machine is fitted with an accelerator switch: pressing the on/off switch harder increases the speed. The speed can be regulated steplessly between 400 rpm and the speed preset on the adjusting wheel. 13

GB Application Adjusting wheel setting Working in polish 1-2 Polishing sensitive surfaces 3-4 High-gloss polishing 5-6 Constant speed The preselected motor speed remains constant through electronic control to ensure a uniform cutting speed even when under load. Temperature cut-out The machine power supply is limited and the speed reduced if the motor exceeds a certain temperature. The machine continues operating at reduced power to allow the ventilator to cool the motor quickly. The machine starts up again automatically once the motor has cooled sufficiently. Current limiting Current limiting prevents permissibly high current consumption under extreme overload, which can lead to a decrease in the motor speed. The motor immediately restarts after the load is removed. 7.2 Attaching polishing pads Only use polishing pads that are suitable for the maximum speed specified. The polishing pads M 14 are fitted with a thread M 14 and are screwed directly onto the spindle. Procedure Press the spindle stop [2-1]. Turn the tool spindle [2-3] until the spindle stop engages when pressed and the tool spindle locks. Screw the polishing pad [2-2] onto the tool spindle or unscrew from the tool spindle. 7.3 Attaching polishing accessories StickFix is a system that simplifies the attachment of polishing accessories (felt, sponge, sheepskin) to the polishing pad [1-7] where they are retained by an adhesive coating. 7.4 Attaching the additional handle The additional handle [3-1] can be screwed onto either the right or left of the gear head. 8 Working with the machine Observe the following instructions: Do not use the machine when the electronics are faulty because the machine may operate at excessive speeds. An absence of the smooth start-up function or speed control indicates that the electronics are faulty. Do not overload the machine by pressing with excessive force! The best polishing results are achieved with moderate application pressure. The polishing capacity and quality are mainly dependent on the selection of the correct polish. Hold the machine with two hands, one on the motor housing and one on the gear head or additional handle [1-6] to ensure safe guidance. The rubber support points on the [3-2] provide extra stability when the machine is set down. 9 Service and maintenance WARNING Risk of injury, electric shock Always disconnect the mains plug from the socket before performing maintenance work on the machine! All maintenance and repair work which requires the motor housing to be opened must only be carried out by an authorised service workshop. EKAT 1 2 3 4 5 Customer service and repair only through manufacturer or service workshops: Please find the nearest address at: www.festool.com/service Use only original Festool spare parts! Order No. at: www.festool.com/service To ensure constant air circulation, always keep the cooling air openings in the motor housing clean and free of blockages. Cleaning the lint filter Clean the lint filter [4-1]regularly on both sides of the machine. 14

If the lint filter is heavily soiled, loosen the screw [4-2], remove the filter and clean using an extractor. The machine is equipped with special carbon brushes. If they are worn, the power is interrupted automatically and the machine comes to a standstill. 10 Accessories Use only original Festool polishing pads. Lowquality polishing pads may cause serious machine imbalance that decreases the quality of the working results and increase machine wear. The order numbers of the accessories and tools can be found in the Festool catalogue or on the Internet under "www.festool.com". 11 Environment Do not throw the power tool in your household waste! Dispose of machines, accessories and packaging at an environmentally responsible recycling centre. Observe the valid national regulations.
