ABSTRAK Pembakaran merupakan kaedah penghasilan tenaga utama dunia. Walau bagaimana pun pembakaran semburan bahan api biodiesel menghadapi masalah kerana pengabusan yang kurang baik. Oleh itu pengurangan pelepasan emisi dalam pembakaran merupakan satu bidang kajian yang sangat penting. Sebuah pembakar untuk bahan api biodiesel yang menggunakan pemusar udara bilah lengkung aliran jejarian dengan suntikan bahan api tunggal telah dikaji secara ujikaji dan analisis penyelakuan. Percampuran bahan api dengan udara yang pantas dan pembentukan zon edaran semula dalaman oleh aliran pusaran yang kuat menghasilkan nyalaan yang stabil dan emisi NOx yang rendah. Penilaian model aliran dan pembakaran telah dijalankan untuk mengkaji pembakar beraliran pusar ini menggunakan dinamik bendalir berkomputer (CFD). Hasil analisis daripada gabungan penggunaan model gelora realizctble k-e dan model pembakaran Eddy Dissipation, didapati gas emisi diedarkan semula ke dalam pusat teras zon gelang edaran semula ke dalam zon pembakaran utama. Susuk pembakaran jrga menunjukkan pusaran kuat menghasilkan nyalaan yang pendek dan stabil pada jarak zld kurang daripada 40oh. Daripada hasil ujikaji pula didapati pembentukan emisi NOx berkurang sebanyak 20oh dengan penggunaan aliran pusaran tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan pusaran rendah yang tiada zon edaran semula. Selain itu pembentukan emisi lain seperti karbon monoksida (CO) dan hidro karbon tak terbakar (HC) adalah rendah di rantau teras pusat untuk semua pusaran tinggi. Sementara itu dengan kaedah pra-pemanasan udara masukan, pembentukan emisi CO dan HC dapat dikurangkan sebanyak 23o/o jika dibandingkan dengan kaedah tanpa pra-pemanasan. Ukuran emisi juga menunjukkan lebihan oksigen yang lebih rendah dengan pembakaran pusaran tinggi berbanding dengan pembakaran pusaran yang rendah. Ini membuktikan pembakaran adalah lebih cekap dengan pembakaran pusaran tinggi. Hasil kajian ini boleh digunakan untuk reka bentuk pembakar generasi baru yang lebih mapan dan mesra alam.

VI ABSTRACT Combustion is a major global energy production method. However combustion of biodiesel fuel spray having problems because of poor atomization. Therefore emission reduction in this combustion system is a very important field of study. A combustor for biodiesel fuel which uses curved blade radial flow swirler with single fuel injection was studied by experiment and simulation analysis. The quick fuel-air mixing and the creation of an internal re-circulation zone due to strong the swirl produced stable flame and low NOx emission. Analysis of flow and combustion model was conducted to study the radial swirl combustor using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The results of the study, that combined the realizable ft-e turbulence model with the Eddy Dissipation combustion model, found that the gas emission was recirculated into the toroidal flow core into the main combustion zone. The combustion cross section shows that a strong swirl produced a short and stable flame at distance z/d lower that 40o/o. From experiments, it was found that the NOx emission formation was reduced by 20% when using high swirl compared to low swirl without recirculation zone. Other than that, the formation of other emissions such as Carbon Monoxide (CO) and unburned Hydro Carbon (HC) are low within the central recirculation zone for all high swirl flows. In addition, with pre-heating of intake air, the CO and HC emission were reduced by 23% compared to combustion without pre-heating. The measurement of emission also showed that excess Oxygen was lower with high swirl combustion compared to low swirl one. This proved that the combustion efficiency is higher with high swirl flow. The result of this lesearch could be used to design new generation combustor that is sustainable and environmental friendlv.
