PPI NBR: 63001-012M-B (REV 01) DATE: September 07, 2004 MEDIUM DURABILITY PRESERVATION PROCESS INSTRUCTION (PPI) for VENT PLENUMS, DUCTS AND TRUNKS to be used in conjunction with CORE PPI 63101-000 with a Cleanliness Level of SSPC-SP-10 Surface Preparation MEDIUM DURABILITY USE OF THIS PPI REQUIRES A DEVIATION FROM SPECIFICATION Vent Plenums, Ducts & Trunks PPI 1
1. SCOPE: 1.1 Cleaning, Surface Preparation and Paintings Requirements for Vent Plenums, Ducts and Trunks. 1.2 RISK STATEMENT: 1.2.1 Risk for installation. If proper surface preparation and application procedures are not adhered to, coating system failure can occur within 3-6 months. 1.2.2 Risk for curing. If overcoat window timeframes are not adhered to, coating system failure is possible within the first 6-9 months of application. 1.2.3 If the PPI checkpoint criteria are met, the following table provides service life expectancy for the listed systems: Coating System Life Expectancy: Surface Preparation Method System Life Expectancy Years MIL-DTL-24441, Type IV or Cleanliness Level of SSPC- MIL-PRF-23236, Types IV, SP-10 V, or VI 4-6 years 2. PRE-SURFACE PREPARATION: (REFER TO CORE PPI EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING) 5.1.1 Disconnect and remove ducting at first break in ducting, and blank flange ducting ends. Vent ducting checkpoints for surface preparation and paint coatings are to be completed in conjunction with the checkpoints for the space. 6. SURFACE PREPARATION: (REFER TO CORE PPI EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING) NOTE: CONTRACTING REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER SHALL DESIGNATE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS TO ACHIEVE A CLEANLINESS LEVEL OF SSPC-SP-10 SURFACE PREPARATION: 1) Dry abrasive blasting 2) Dry abrasive blasting with abrasive sponge media 3) Wet abrasive blasting followed by dry abrasive blasting to remove flash rust 4) Wet abrasive blasting followed by dry abrasive blasting with abrasive sponge media to remove flash rust 5) UHP water jetting followed by dry abrasive blasting to remove flash rust and ensure a 2-4 mil surface profile 6) UHP water jetting followed by dry abrasive blasting with abrasive sponge media to remove flash rust and ensure a 2-4 mil surface profile 7. PAINTING REQUIREMENTS: (REFER TO CORE PPI EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING) NOTES: CONTRACTING REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER SHALL DESIGNATE COATING SYSTEM TO BE APPLIED. WET AND DRY FILM MEASUREMENTS SHALL BE TAKEN DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS OF THE MIL-DTL-24441 AND MIL-PRF-23236 COATING SYSTEMS. 7.1 WET FILM MEASUREMENTS: During application of the MIL-DTL-24441 or MIL-PRF-23236 coating systems, applicators shall monitor wet film thickness using wet film gauges. Random wet film thickness Vent Plenums, Ducts & Trunks PPI 2
(WFT) measurements shall be taken during the application process to ensure the specified dry film thickness (DFT) is achieved. Record WFT measurements in Appendix 7. 8. PRIME COAT APPLICATION: 9.
