UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL I. GENERAL The Style PN-59 slow pick-up plug-in relay was developed primarily for use in WABCO Cab signalling and train control equipment. Its design is based upon principles that make it adaptable to the vibration problems encountered in locomotive service. The armature is pivoted at its center for rotation in a vertical plane, and the four dependent front and back contacts are evenly divided between the upper and lower halves of the armature so as to provide equal loads on opposite sides of the pivot. With this symmetrical construction, complete mechanical and dynamic balance is obtained, thus assuring that the relay will not operate falsely due to external vibration. Because of the absence of gravity torque, the armature is biased to the deenergized position by two coil springs, one on each side of the pivot. The springs are designed so that their loading is considerably below the maximum permissible stress and are normalized by heat treatment before assembly, to insure reliable performance. These PN-59 relays obtain their slow pick up feature by one of two means. Coil washers and laminations provide a slow pickup time of 1.1 second as in the case of PN-59 relays N436928 and N436928-001. However, PN-59 relay N451130-0301 uses a capacitor module which gives a 3.5 second delay in pick-up after energy is applied. The relay is also designed so that the magnet coil, and for PN-59 relay N451130-0301 the capacitor module, can readily be removed from the rear of the relay without opening the relay cover. All parts of the armature and contact assemblies are fully visible through the transparent plastic cover. The relay mounts on a base permanently attached to the rack in the equipment box, and is held securely in position by two hexagonal self-locking nuts applied to the threaded ends of the two guide rods on the mounting base. These guide rods also serve to align the relay so that its connector plugs will properly engage the contact receptacles in the mounting base when the relay is plugged in; however, the relay should not be slammed into position because such action may result in damage to either the relay or the base. The relay can conveniently be detached by first removing the nuts from the ends of the guide rods and then pulling outwardly on the handle on the front of the relay cover. \ Relay and mounting base are indexed to prevent insertion of slow pick-up relay in space for an ordinary-acting relay or a slow-release relay, and vice versa. It is recommended that the relay be taken out of service at regular intervals, depending upon service experience and checked for pick-up time as described in paragraph V. Excessively 5624-C, p. 2

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL fast pick-up times for PN-59 relay N451130-0301 will indicate a shorted coil temperature compensation network, shorted timing resistor, or leaky capacitors. The manufacturer's specification on leakage for each individual capacitor after charging for 5 minutes at rated voltage is 82 microamperes. II. ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES - SPECIAL 2.1 ELECTRO - MAGNETIC TIMING. S.P.V. PN-59 RELAYS ONLY N436928 and N436928-001 Pick-up and release timing is achieved through the electromagnetic structure of the relay. The coil washers (M451374-0102), 46 per coil, and washers (Ml68826), amount required to have core project 1/16" beyond coil, give the relay its slow pick-up (1.1 sec.) characteristic. Release time is shortened by the use of laminations (M436925), 13 required, which bridge the two coils and are located between the 2 stacks of washers previously mentioned. 2.2 CAPACITOR MODULE - RESISTOR - CAPACITOR TIME DELAY S.P.U. PN-59 RELAY ONLY N451130-0301 The slow pick-up characterisitc of this relay is obtained through a R-C series network. When a DC voltage, See Figure 1, is applied across Cl and C2 the capacitors start charging but the current is limited by the series resistors. The slow build up in charge across the capacitor, until the voltage reaches the pick-up value of the relay, provides the time delay required in achieving slow pick-up. The delay in pick-up, after energy is applied, is in the order of 3.5 to 4.5 seconds. 2.2.1 Coil The coil (UN451144-0101) is specially temperature compensated using a thermistor network which is encapsulated with the coil. The total coil resistance including the compensating network is 420 ohms. For a coil which is thoroughly stabilized at any temperature between -40 C and +70 C, the resistance should not be less than 290 ohms and not greater than 450 ohms. 2.2.2 Capacitor Module The capacitor module (UN451131-1201) consists of 3 to 5 electrolytic capacitors, the number being determined by the actual capacity of the capacitors. These capacitors have very good temperature and leakage characteristics, but have a wide capacity tolerance range of -10, +75%. The nominal capacity 5624-C, p. 3

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL value of the unit is 8000 mfd. The acceptable limits are 7000 mfd minimum and 9000 mfd maximum. Also included in the capacitor module are the series resistors comprising a fixed resistor of 1200 ohms and a resistor which has a value that is selected during the timing test. This resistor is mounted on two turret lugs provided on the printed circuit board. Circuit diagram of the capacitor module and relay is shown in Figure 1. r,:,m,ng -- - -1 : RESISTOR r-.-~.. -+-----0---- I 100 TO I I 470.n : I I I - I FIXED "T" I 1 + + + I!RESISTOR I 12. ADJUSTMENT PROCEUDRES - GENERAL 3.1 ARMATURE AND POLE PIECE ASSEMBLY The armature should have end play on the pivots of from 0.010 inch to 0.020 inch. Pivots should fit freely with 0.002 inch to 0.004 inch side clearance in the armature bearings. 5624-C, p. 4

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL The armature is set at the factory as nearly as possible to a parallel air gap of 0.011 inch before the pole faces are painted. (See Figure 2). After painting, a check is made to see that the physical air gap is not less than 0.008 inch. These relays have "0.011 inch A.G. "stencilled on the ends of their upper pole pieces and this can readily be seen on the completely assembled relay. The armature bracket should be so positioned that both stop pins hit against their stops at the same time. This may be checked by holding one end of the armature against its stop and noting that the other end of the armature can be pulled away from its stop to take up play in the pivots by approximately the same amount as when the opposite ends are tested. The safety stop pins must not touch the pole faces as they are filed 0.005 inch shorter than main stop pins. Treatment of pole faces should be in accordance with instructions outlined in our Instruction Pamphlet U=5038, covering "Pole Face Treatment". No paint should be applied to armature stop pins or to the large bronze inserts in the pole pieces. 3.2 CONTACT ADJUSTMENT The contact springs and the fingers supporting the contact springs should be straight and approximately at right angles to the relay base. (See Figure 3). All adjustments of contacts should be made by bending the brass fingers with a tool applied between the rivets. The stop members should be adjusted to just touch the contact springs with no noticeable pressure. Because of the effect of the weight of the contact tips, all checks of contact adjustment should be made with the relay in the normal upright position. The heel spring clips should be closed in around each bushing using special pliers Pc.M263832 - Dwg. A2586 - Sh. 85 on the free ends of the clips as shown in Figure 4. When the pliers are removed, the clip jaw opening should be not greater than 5/32 inch {See Figure 3). Contact tips must make at two points across the width or on at least 25% of the width at the center of the tips for silver to silver contacts and on at least 50% of the width at the center for silver to silver impregnated carbon contacts. Contact surfaces should not be disturbed unless there is evidence of severe pitting from excessive loading or an accidental short through the contacts. When contacts must be redressed, nothing coarser than a #6 pillar file should be used and this should be followed by the use of Metalographic paper to remove file marks. Dust from the carbon tips should then 5624-C, p. 5

A coated or glossy paper should not be used and the edges or ends should not be pulled through the contacts, for otherwise, particles of paper may be left in the contact area. Heel contact springs should be adjusted after assembling heel spring bushings and operating pins into clips, using 0.031 inch thick spacers at each stop pin so that the tips are in line and the spring operating pins are not against the sides of the slotted holes in the operating arms. This may be accomplished by temporarily using a special operating arm with one operating lug cut off and adjusting the heel contact fingers until the tips are in line and the spring operating pin just clears the remaining lug on the operating arm. The temporary operating arm should then be removed and the standard arms permanently assembled to the armature. Front contact springs should be adjusted with 0.020 inch thick spacers at each stop pin to just barely show light between the tips. These spacers may be reduced to 0.017 inch if necessary to meet calibration requirements. N436928 and N436928-001 ONLY Back contact springs #1 and #4 should be adjusted with 0.037 inch thick spacers at each stop pin to just barely show light between the tips. Back contacts #2 and #3 should be similarly adjusted using 0.33 inch thick spacers. N451130-0301 ONLY All back contact springs should be adjusted with.037 inch thick spacers at each stop pin to just barely show light between the tips. Fron contact opening back contacts fully compressed should be 0.040" minimum. 3.3 RELEASING SPRINGS N436928 and N436928-001 ONLY Releasing springs should be adjusted by means of the spring guide screw to have approximately the same compression, to bring calibration within the specification requirement~ and to give 0.050 inch front contact opening for the #1 and #4 contacts and at least 0.040 inch opening for the #2 and #3 contacts with the relay deenergized. 5624-C, p. 7

Method of Closing-In of Lower Heel Spring Clips N451130-0301 ONLY Releasing Springs should be adjusted by means of the spring guide screw to have approximately the same compression, to bring calibration within the specification requirements and to give 0.050 inch opening on all front contacts with the relay deenergized. ALL PN-59 S.P.U. RELAYS The back stop screw shall be adjusted to just clear the armature with the relay deenergized. Force on the operating arm, midway between the bushings, of at least 45 grams should be required to just close the front contacts. IV. CALIBRATION 4.1 GENERAL After the relays have been inspected and adjusted in accordance with the foregoing, they should be calibrated to meet the pick up and drop-away values given in TABLE 1 for PN-59 S.P.U. Relays N436928 and N436928-001, and TABLE II for PN-59 S.P.U. Relay N451130-0301. 5624-C, p. 8

N451130-0301 ONLY NOTE UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL ffi The relay must be calibrated with capacitor module disconnected. Before attempting calibration, the backstrap must be removed and the coil leads unsoldered from the printed circuit. Backstrap must then be reassembled to permit calibration while capacitor module is disconnected. 4. 2 DROP-AWAY The relay should be given a charge of four times the pick-up value and the current then gradually reduced until the armature drops away, opening all front contacts. This value should be not less than that specified for Drop-Away in the table. 4.3 PICK-UP Immediately after the Drop-Away value has been measured, the current should be reduced to zero, the circuit opened for one second and the current again applied in the same direction, gradually increasing it until the armature picks up to close the front contacts. This value should be not more than that specified in the calibration table for Maximum Pick-Up. 4.4 FULL STROKE The current should then be increased further, if necessary, until the armature completes its motion and rests against the stop pins. This latter energization must be no more than the Maximum Pick-Up value in the table. N451130-0301 ONLY NOTE After calibration is completed, the coil must be reconnected to the capacitor module. Backstrap must be temporarily removed while reconnecting the coil and capacitor module. Be sure backstrap is properly assembled and fastened securely in place after coil is reconnected. 5624-C, p. 9

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL V. TIMING TEST The timinq test is performed after the relay is calibrated, and in the case of N451130-0301 the coil connected t- the capacitor module. Figure 5 shows the relay connected ror the timing test. Positive battery is connected to Cl (upper left-hand terminal) through a switch, and negative battery is connected to C2 (upper right-hand terminal). A resistance decade box is connected to the turret lugs on the module. The timing instrument should be connected in such a way as to measure the time interval from the time power is applied to the time the front contacts close. See Figure 5. The suggested procedure is as follows: With 33 volts on the power supply, and zero resistance on the decade box, close the switch and note the time interval. It should be less than 3.5 seconds. Open the switch and after allowing sufficient time for the capacitors to discharge (about 20 seconds) add resistance on the decade box and retime. Continue until the specified time of 3.5 seconds is met. Open the switch and adjust the power supply to 31 volts and check the time. The 31-volt time should be less than 4.5 seconds. Several trial values of resistance may be required to meet the 3~ volt pick-up time (4.5 seconds) and the 33 volt pick-up time (3.5 seconds). When a resistance value is chosen, substitute a fixed resistor of like value and re-check the pick-up time to see whether or not the minimum and maximum time values are met. Table II shows standard timing resistor values. The power supply required for the timing test should be voltage regulated. Batteries may also be used if 31 to 33 volts can be obtained. The use of a voltage divided from a higher voltage supply is possible if the lower leg (the resistance across the relay} is not more than 500 ohms. The perferred value is 100 ohms. + Cl SLOW BATTERY OR - PICKUP POWER SUPPLY - C2 PN-59 --4 ~... ANY FRONT BACK CONTACT ON THE RELAY 31 TO 33 VOLTS T IME START PULSE INPUT HEWLETT PACK ARD UNIV. The knurled cover clamping nuts should be tightened finger tight and the seal wire applied to the closest seal holes of the two nuts. The seal wire should be drawn up tightly and the seal applied with as little as possible free length of wire between the nuts. VIII. PERIODIC.MAINTENANCE All vital relays must be inspected and tested at least every two (2) years. The tests and inspections are to include: pick-up current, drop-away current, timing of slow operating and timing relays, visual inspection of contacts for damage or misalignment, corrosion, or other contamination of parts, loose parts inside of cover, broken seal, and cracked or broken cover. All vital relays installed in locomotive or car-carried equipment are to be inspected and tested at least every two (2) years as above. In addition, every four (4) years the relays are to be removed from service and adjusted, repaired and tested.. ' Relays not passing the above stated tests and inspections must be replaced and not returned to service until the operating characteristics and conditions are in accordance with US&S specifications. 5624-C, p. 12
