1. Product Item This guide provides installation and product specification information for the Diginet 650mA Phase Dimmable LED Driver, Diginet item number DGLC650C18PD. 2. Product package contents The package contains 1 x Diginet LED Driver 650mA Phase Dimmable, complete with an Australian/NZ 240Vac 10A mains flex & plug, and a dc lead pre-terminated with a 4-pin connector for the LED lamp. Both Gerard Lighting LED lamps and suitable 3rd party LED lamps can be used in conjunction with this driver. For more information on Gerard Lighting LED lamps, please contact Gerard Lighting or visit www.gerardlighting.com.au 3. Important notes and safety information WARNING - Electric shock may result in serious injury or death. Follow all warnings in this guide and on the product while working in accordance with the latest electrical safety practices. There are no user serviceable parts inside this product. Do not attempt to disassemble or operate the driver with any covers removed. If you require information or assistance regarding the installation or operation of this product, contact Technical Services at Diginet Control Systems. Contact details are provided on the back cover of this guide and also at www.diginet.net.au 4. Product summary An efficient, high quality, Australian designed LED driver delivering 650mA constant current at 12Vdc to 24Vdc. The driver is designed for use in general lighting applications such as downlights, spot/accent luminaires and linear LED lighting systems. The driver is compatible with most phase control dimmers. The driver is pre-terminated with an Australian/NZ 240Vac 10A mains rated flex and plug. It is also pre-terminated with a dc lead and a 4-pin connector for a Gerard Lighting 4-pin LED lamp. As well as Gerard lighting LED lamps, the driver can be used in conjunction with suitable 3rd party LED lamps. 5. Product capabilities The LED driver is designed for easy installation, long lifetime and high efficiency. Smooth dimming of an LED light source can be achieved via a mains rated phase angle controlled dimmer connected to the mains input of the driver. Depending on the type and manufacturer of the dimmer used, smooth dimming can be achieved to levels as low as 1%. The dc output from the driver includes open circuit / short circuit detection. The driver automatically recovers from dc output open circuit and short circuit conditions. The driver is compatible with Gerard Lighting LED lamps, including Sunset Dim LED lamps and Constant Colour LED lamps. When used in conjunction with Gerard Lighting LED lamps, an active thermal wind-back feature is provided to protect against LED damage due to overheating. 3 rd party LED lamps with the appropriate specifications can also be used in conjunction with this driver. To connect the driver to 3 rd party lamps, the installer needs to remove the 4-pin dc connector (see section 8 for further details). 4
6. Mounting the driver The driver is supplied with a tool-removable mains terminal cover, with built-in cable clamps for strain relief. It is therefore suitable for installation outside a luminaire, as well as inside a luminaire. The driver is suitable for mounting in a variety of indoor locations, including above suspended tile ceilings and fixed plasterboard ceilings, as well as inside luminaires and linear lighting systems. The driver has an ingress protection rating of IP20 and as such is not protected against moisture ingress. It is therefore not suitable for mounting in an outdoor environment without being housed in a suitable weatherproof enclosure. The driver includes a 4mm diameter fixing hole adjacent to the LED dc supply cable. This can be used for anchoring the driver in a suitable location. Figure 1 Fixing hole for anchoring the LED Driver When installed, the driver should not be covered. A minimum clearance of 25mm from insulation or combustible material is required. The maximum recommended ambient operating temperature and maximum recommended case temperature must not be exceeded during product operation. 5
7. Connecting a Gerard Lighting 4-pin LED lamp to the driver Figure 2 - Connecting a Gerard Lighting 4-pin LED lamp to the LED Driver 8. Connecting a two-wire 3rd party LED lamp to the driver To connect a compatible 3 rd party two wire LED lamp to the driver, an optional Terminal Adaptor is available from Diginet to convert the dc lead 4-pin connector to a standard two tunnel terminal block. The part number of this adaptor is DGLCTCL4M2S. Terminal Adaptor DGLCTCL4M2S for the LED driver lead, 4-pin to screw terminals This connects directly to the end of the dc LED driver lead. It provides two terminals (dc positive and negative) to allow connection of a 3 rd party lamp. The Terminal Adaptor connects directly to the LED Driver lead 6
Figure 3 - Connecting a 3 rd party two wire LED lamp to the LED Driver using a Terminal Adaptor Alternatively, the connection to a 3 rd party lamp can be made without a Terminal Adaptor, as shown in the diagram below. Figure 4 - Connecting a 3 rd party two wire LED lamp to the LED Driver without a Terminal Adaptor 7
9. Using a dimmer to control the connected LED lamp dimming level The driver can be used in conjunction with a standard phase angle controlled dimmer to dim LED lamps. The dimmer is connected to the 240Vac mains input of the driver, as shown below. Leading edge, universal and trailing edge phase controlled dimmers are all generally compatible with the driver. Figure 5 Using a leading edge, universal or trailing edge dimmer in conjunction with the LED driver Minimum number of drivers connected to a Leading Edge Dimmer The minimum number of drivers which can be connected to a specific leading edge dimmer and provide satisfactory dimming performance is dependent on the minimum load rating of the connected leading edge dimmer. Diginet have carried out dimming performance testing of 3rd party manufacturers dimmers when used in conjunction with this driver. Contact Diginet or visit www.diginet.net.au for further information. Diginet also provide the following general guidelines on the minimum number of drivers required to be connected to a 3rd party leading edge dimmer to ensure satisfactory dimming performance. If the leading edge dimmer being used in conjunction with the driver has a low minimum load rating specified by the manufacture ( 15W) and the connected LED lamp power is 8W, the lamp will probably dim satisfactorily with a minimum of one driver. However, actual performance with a specific dimmer should still be verified by the installer. If the leading edge dimmer being used in conjunction with the driver has a high minimum load rating specified by the manufacture ( 40W), several drivers will be needed to achieve satisfactory dimming performance. The actual quantity of drivers required for a specific dimmer should be verified by the installer. Maximum number of drivers connected to a Leading Edge Dimmer The maximum number of drivers which can be connected to a leading edge dimmer is dependent on the dimmer. Diginet have carried out testing to determine the maximum number of drivers which can be used in conjunction with specific 3rd party manufacturers dimmers. Contact Diginet or visit www.diginet.net.au for further information. The limitations described above for leading edge dimmers do not generally apply to trailing edge or universal dimmers used in conjunction with the driver. Generally, a minimum of one trailing edge / universal dimmer can be used with one driver to achieve satisfactory dimming performance and the dimmer can be loaded to its full load capacity. 8
