DSTATCOM or PCS S&C Vista S&C Vista S&C Hybrid DSTATCOM or Energy Storage Detailed Analytical Studies Assure Conformance to Interconnection Requirements As the first step in designing a wind farm, S&C s transmission and distribution planning team will perform detailed simulations to verify that the ratings and performance characteristics of the proposed equipment will meet interconnection requirements set forth by the local grid codes. S&C uses Power Technologies Incorporated s PSS/E and DIGSILENT software to model the grid as well as the wind turbine generators manufactured by the major wind turbine manufacturers. The planning team will prepare a transient stability study to determine how the proposed equipment will react to faults, tripping of a transmission line with and without autoreclosing, tripping of a generator, and/or load shedding. The goal is to verify that the wind turbines will remain stable after the electrical disturbance. 2 S&C ELECTRIC EUROPE LTD.
As required, S&C s study team can also prepare a variety of other analytical studies: l A reliability study will help you maximise the efficiency and safety of your electric power system l A switching transient study will yield solutions to problems associated with the switching of capacitor banks or shunt reactors l A loadflow study will determine how your system responds to transmission system contingency conditions, and if components such as transformers and conductors are overloaded. Shunt capacitors, reactors, and/or adaptive, static, or inverter based VAR compensators may be needed to maintain system voltages within specified limits l A voltage support study will determine the optimum ratings and placement of reactive power support devices l Grid Compliance studies to prove solutions meet local codes l Harmonic studies to determine the impact of connection including the sizing of any harmonic mitigation needed The PureWave DSTATCOM offers: l Suitability for voltage control or power factor control applications l Inverter based technology available up to ±40 MVAR, with system ratings up to 100 MVAR when applied with mechanically switched capacitor banks l Response time of 2 to 4 milliseconds l Flexible packaging: fixed in place or transportable l Modular design available in multiples of ±1.25 MVAR; completely self-contained l Short time capability, providing extra support during faults l Extensive remote communication and self-diagnostic capabilities l Ease of adding N+1 redundancy to achieve higher availability S&C s Power Quality Products Will Help You Meet Local Grid Code Requirements Too ±1.25 DSTATCOM, Orkney Isles, Scotland Hybrid DSTATCOM Solutions S&C is amongst the largest supplier of power quality products in the world. S&C s experience in manufacturing and installing these products, benefit both the wind farm developer and owner in meeting the low voltage ride through and power factor guidelines set forth by local grid code. S&C s power quality products presently protect over 500 MVA of critical load around the world in a wide variety of applications. S&C understands the cost drivers for a wind development and is able to offer a hybrid solution to keep installed costs to a minimum. These solutions include Point on Wave Switched Capacitors and Switched Reactors coupled with De-Tuning Reactors or Harmonic filters when required, to ensure minimum impact on the grid due to operation. The PUREWAVE DSTATCOM is suitable for voltage support on weak grids and has been used by utility companies for voltage support on turbines as small as 850kW. PureWave DSTATCOM S&C products specifically designed to address voltage regulation and power factor issues are the PureWave DSTATCOM Distribution Static Compensator. Each provides the dynamic (or fast ) VARs needed to reduce the impact of fluctuations in wind farm output on the distribution system. They can provide a stable system voltage transmission or a specific system power factor, depending on the control mode utilised. The PureWave DSTATCOM can also be used to support distribution system voltage during low voltage ride through events which would otherwise cause the wind turbines to trip off-line. ±7.5 DSTATCOM, Scotland DSTATCOM controlling 2 Capacitor Banks and 1 Reactor Excellence Through Innovation 3

SmartGrid Storage Management System SmartGrid Storage Management System at DESS Bluffton Station S&C s SmartGrid Storage Management System allows better utilisation of renewable energy such as wind power. It offers megawatt hours of energy storage for SmartGrid applications, permitting this power to be dispatched when it s most valuable. Power generated off-peak can be used during periods of peak usage, dramatically reducing the greenhouse gases produced by traditional generating sources, and displacing peak energy costs with off-peak costs. The SmartGrid Storage Management System extends the life of existing equipment and improves asset management. It can defer or eliminate the need for additional generation, which can greatly reduce associated carbon emissions. The system features a fast responding automatic controller interface between the grid and a stored energy source, such as a sodium sulfur battery system. The controller can address power production peaks and valleys, VAR control of generation, and SCADA control of wind production. It can also improve the integration of wind generation into the standard generation production schedule. Dynamic islanding can be achieved by applying the IntelliTEAM II Automatic Restoration System, in combination with the SmartGrid Storage Management System. Dynamic islanding is implemented upon loss of power to the feeder from the serving substation. Service is restored to the maximum possible number of customers, based upon load information captured by IntelliTEAM II equipped devices before the loss of power and the amount of energy available in the battery. The island is minimised as the battery is depleted and/or power is restored to the feeder. DESS Bluffton Station, USA Excellence Through Innovation 5
