Introduction Intended Use To provide thorough and adequate fixed-speed orbital mixing of solution contained in printed welled slides, tissue culture plates, reaction trays, flasks and tubes. General Usage Do not use this product for anything other than its intended usage. Function The Roto Mix provides a 5" X 6" silicon-rubber platform which accommodates slides, plates, tubes, flasks, etc. The platform is driven in an orbital motion with a diameter of 20 mm at a fixed speed of 60 rpm in models M48225, M48220-26 and M48224, and at a fixed speed of 100 rpm in models M48215, M48210-26 and M48214. The orbital motion mixes solutions placed on slides and produces a gentle orbital solution flow in tissue culture plates, reaction trays, culture plates, flasks and tubes. 4

Principles of Operation Note Gear motors, by their design, generate more motor noise than DC or shaded pole motors. This pronounced sound generation is normal for gear motors. A 60 rpm or 100 rpm synchronous gear motor direct drives a bushing mounted to the underside of the platform. Two support bushings, with the drive bushing, rotate at 60 rpm or 100 rpm with an orbit of 20 mm. This provides uniform constant speed mixing of solution. The motor is activated by an ON/OFF toggle switch. 7
Installation Remove your Roto Mix from the carton. Check electrical specifications and plug into a properly grounded receptacle. In the event the unit is damaged, file claim with the delivering carrier. Retain packaging material. Turn OFF/ON switch to the ON position. Verification of orbits per minute: This can be determined by using a watch and counting the orbits for one minute to determine if they are at 60 rpm or 100 rpm ± 5 rpm. 8
Operation Caution To prevent damage to the motor in this mixer, do not overload. It is recommended that the maximum load not exceed three pounds. The use of this mixer in a high humidity environment, such as an incubator, is not recommended. Using this mixer in an incubator will increase the temperature within the incubator, and may result in damage to the mixer s motor. See your Thermolyne catalog for mixers that are better suited to environments with higher temperatures and humidity. Operating Tips 1. It is safer to mix reagents and chemicals in small mouth labware to avoid splashing. Test vessel stability to assure vessel will not tip, teeter, walk or slide. Improvised tie-downs or trays may be used to hold unstable vessels in position if you prefer. 2. The black silicone rubber top is removable. Lift one corner to remove top. The top must remain clean to maintain its friction-gripping quality. Wash with soap and water, dry and reinstall. 9
Maintenance and Servicing Warning Disconnect from power supply before servicing. Refer servicing to qualified personnel. 1. The drive motor and linkage assembly do not require lubrication. 2. Jerky orbital action indicates the motor or bushings are worn and should be replaced. 3. Failure of the unit to operate when plugged in with toggle switch ON, indicates a defective toggle switch, motor or disengaged drive linkage. 4. Disassembly: Remove four case screws on each side. Remove silicon platform by grasping two corners and flex upward. Remove motor mount screws. Reverse procedure for reassembly. General Cleaning Instructions Wipe exterior surfaces with lightly dampened cloth 10
