Moog F-35 Global Sustainment Services We believe our most valuable offering is customer support, and we are committed to delivering a superior level of sustainment services for all of our customers. Moog is continuing this tradition, supplying the following services for the new 5th generation F-35 aircraft equipped with Moog s advanced systems. n Turnkey Sustainment Services n Dedicated Engineering, Manufacturing, Repair and Overhaul Support n Technical Support and Training n Agile Responsive Global Logistics Support n Forward Stocking of Assets n Public-Private Partnerships including Joint Depot Operations F-35 Lead System Integrator Moog is leading an industry team in the development, integration and qualification of the Primary Flight Control and Leading Edge Flap Actuation Systems for all three variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. As the prime contract holder, Moog s role includes management of the industry teams, integration of the complete actuation systems, and key supplier of critical technologies and major subsystems. Moog is also the OEM supplier of the Lift System Primary Actuation for the F-35B STOVL variant and the Wingfold Actuation Systems on the F-35C carrier variant. Primary Flight Control Actuation System Overview The F-35 Primary Flight Control Actuation System features a power-by-wire architecture with fully self-contained electrohydrostatic actuators (EHA) positioning the primary flight surface (horizontal tails, flaperons and rudders). Each primary flight surface is controlled by one EHA. The EHAs for the horizontal tail and flaperon are dual tandem whereas the rudder configuration is simplex. The electronics control unit (ECU) includes loop closure control electronics (CE) and motor-pump power drive electronics (PDE) to position the EHA. The ECU includes the hardware and software required to perform the control, monitoring, redundancy management and built-in test (BIT). Leading Edge Flap Actuation System Overview The Leading Edge Flap Actuation System (LEFAS) includes all hardware and software necessary to position the leading edge flaps in response to position commands issued from the vehicle management computer (VMC). The LEFAS also monitors performance and position of the flaps and reports back to the VMC. On each wing, Moog provides an electronic control unit, electronic power drive unit, asymmetry brake and outboard position sensor. For the C variant, Moog also provides the foldbox assembly. Lift System Primary Actuation Overview The hovering ability of the F-35B STOVL aircraft is provided by the lift system, which combines a thrust vectoring nozzle that directs main engine exhaust downward to generate aft vertical lift and a centrally mounted lift fan to counterbalance forward vertical lift. Moog supplies the Lift System Primary Actuation, which includes the actuation system for the three-bearing swivel nozzle and the actuation system for the lift fan s variable area nozzle and inlet guide vane. These actuation systems use electronically controlled hydraulic and fueldraulic servoactuators specially designed for operation in extreme temperature and vibration environments. Wingfold Actuation System Overview The Wingfold Actuation system converts electric power into rotary motion to fold and spread the wing tip in response to electrical commands issued from the controller. The power drive unit receives electrical power through the controller and an AC motor converts the electrical power into rotary motion. The output of the electric motor provides the torque and speed output required to drive two locking transmissions that either fold or spread the outer wing accordingly. 3
