- President's Corner - By Tom Constantine (continued from page 1) Spring is around corner and, of course, Springfest will be held in April. The weekend after Springfest will be The Mitty" vintage automobile races at Road Atlanta. There will be several Corvairs racing this year in the "Mitty" and it would be great for Corvair Atlanta if we could qualify for a Club Coral to show our Corvairs. It takes a minimum of 12 Corvairs, of any model or year, to qualify for the coral. It would also be good for the Club if we could be represented for all three days of the Event; Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you would like to be a part of the coral, on any of the three days, please contact me. Tom - The Mitty Update - April 27-29 th, 2012 The Mitty Challenge is named for Walter Mitty, a fictional James Thurber character, and for 2012 it offers an incredible variety of historically significant race cars both on display and on the Road Atlanta track. A note from Dan Terry: We at Corvair Atlanta are planning to have a car coral at The Mitty this year. Our Springfest at Helen event will take place the weekend before The Mitty. It would be great if some of the Mitty folks would come early and see our event. And I hope a number of our attendees will stick around for The Mitty. The latest Mitty update from Rick Norris: This should be a fun event for Corvair fans. There will probably be more Corvairs at this event as there ever have been at any speed event except for Corsa conventions and local chapter autocrosses. There may never be a larger turnout of Corvairs again at this event. So far, these Corvair drivers are planing to enter: David Clemens, Michael LeVeque, Warren LeVeque, Mike Levine, Eddie Meadows, Rick Norris, James Reeve and Spence Shepard. - A Look in the Rear View Mirror - The idea of hosting a National in Atlanta once again, appeared to the C-A membership to be a great idea. However, all the 33 outstretched hands of approval suddenly found pockets when asked, Who will volunteer to chair this event? Like an instantaneous plague, the thought died a quick death and was vetoed. Later, Ed Mackey, after 30 days of contemplation, picked up the gauntlet and made it known that he, along with the assist of Billy Bruce and the Warner Robins Club, would make the pitch to the CORSA Board. This required another vote by the membership, so 115 vote cards were mailed to members to voice approval or disapproval. 82 voted yes, 8 nays came back and 25 others were not returned. The National Convention was in Ontario, California that year where the presentation was to be made. Ed, along with Bill Nutt and Burnie Weddle gave the pitch, were granted the task, and history was in the making. This writer believes that Ed moved in this direction just to get to go to California. It also prompted C-A to Incorporate the Club into a Non-profit Organization for protection of the Officers and Board of Directors and the 25 non-voters who didn t have a 14 cent stamp. November 1990. 40 Magnetic door signs with the Club logo were ordered destined for parades. Also, 13 watches with the C-A logo on the dial were made available to those who could cough up $25. I wonder if any of the above still exist? In this time frame the Club had male and female Members of the Year. Voted winners were Ed Mackey, and jointly, Jeannette Rudolph and June Dixon. The late Burnie Weddle was voted 1991 C-A President for about the 7 th time. After much controversy about Festhalle rent going sky high, it was agreed to hold another Helen Meet. Jerry Lamb subjected himself to be Chairman and June Dixon Assistant. Ed Mackey will hold the seat of Director/Advisor. This would be the first year that Corvair Atlanta and the Heart of Georgia Chapters would join hands to jointly host the event. It turned out to be a good union as both Clubs have continued to co-host Helen and respective members are still on speaking terms. The 1967 Corvair Monza restoration project is almost underway with an estimate of $2300 needed for completion. The car will be raffled off at the 1992 Convention provided work progresses quicker than the estimates. It took two months to get that accomplished. Foreseeing the slow progress, Billy Bruce took over the restoration project. (story continued on page 6) Page 5
('A Look In The Rear View Mirror' is continued from page 5) Yet another money making project came from one anonymous member with a rather bizarre idea. He suggested members make beaded necklaces in their spare time by stringing salvaged axle ball bearings from junked cars. These bearings can be precision pre-bored by retired machinists for easy assembly. All it additionally would take is an eighteen inch Mylar 20 lb. fish line and the ability to tie a square knot. What a great convention memento priced $9.95 with only $1.25 each invested for bearings, fish line and Gunk cleaner, he added. To let this brain stormer down easy, everyone agreed that it would be better offered on the Home Shopping Network about 4 AM prior to Father s Day. It s not for certain, but this sounds very much like something Bill Rudolph or Jack Allison would hatch up. What s your guess? Leeroy 7, Your Aging Historian Chevrolet picks Gaffney SC couple as winner of Facebook love story! Kay and Eddie Gault drove away from their wedding in a 1965 Corvair Corsa In celebration of Valentine's Day, Chevy polled it's Facebook fans to ask how the company played a role in their love story. The Gault's response rose to the top of more than 200 replies from fans across the country. We were especially interested in Edward and Kay's story because they have remained sweethearts since high school and are about to celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary this summer, the company said in a statement. We loved that Chevy has been there since the beginning. Corvair Atlanta's Dan Terry has a connection with the Gault's: I met Ed in 1975 when I joined the Sandlapper Corvairs in Columbia, S.C. He rebuilt my engine in 1979 and did a push rod reseal in 1983 with vitons. Those O' rings are still in use today! They were cousins to the three ducks that disappeared earlier that week. The 1 st goose said: BARTENDER, I ll have a corn syrup with a shot of Barley in it. The 2 nd goose said: BARTENDER, I ll have a corn syrup with a shot of Barley in it. The 3 rd goose didn t say a word.the bartender asked the 3 rd goose: What ll you have?
