Basic Instrument Diesel fuel is the only source of lubrication for the sliding parts in a fuel pump which is an important component in a diesel vehicle. Therefore, the life of a fuel pump is largely controlled by the lubricity of the diesel fuel which is influenced by its quality. Quality of diesel fuel can vary depending on several factors including the source of the crude oil, refineries, storage methods and sulfur content. Ducom High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) as shown in Figure 1 is used to test the lubricity Figure 1. Ducom High Frequency Reciprocating Rig behavior, that is, friction coefficient and wear resistance of diesel fuel in compliance with standards like ASTM D6079 and ISO 12156-2016. Generally, the mean wear scar diameter (MWSD) on the ball (see Fig. 2) is used to determine the quality of diesel fuel. Ducom HFRR can also be used for experiments beyond the ASTM and ISO standards because its parameters are of wider range, for example, the frequency: 10 Hz to 60 Hz, load: 2N to 10 N, temperature: RT to 100 deg C and humidity: 35 % RH to 80 % RH. Figure 2. Wear profiles and the mean wear scar diameter (MWSD) for different diesel fuels. Applications Quality control of the diesel fuel supplied by different refineries or supply chain methods Role of different biofuels in diesel fuel lubricity Synergistic effect of coatings and diesel fuel components in predicting the life of fuel pump Screening of range of viscosity modifiers and boundary additives to improve the poor lubricity of low sulfur diesel High temperature lubricity behavior of engine oils as a function of its base oil, antiwear additives and viscosity modifiers Tribocorrosion behavior of lubricants and coatings 3 P a g e i n f o @ d u c o m. c o m w w w. d u c o m. c o m
Functional Features Automated humidity control ( 35 % RH to 80 % RH) in a closed environment chamber using a set of solenoid valves and two columns in the chamber: (1) generate dry air, (2) generate saturated (humid) air using a compressed air supply. Automated heating control of the lubricants (RT to 100 o C) using a couple of resistive heaters and a thermocouple. Tribocorrosion set up with a three electrode potentiostat to generate linear polarization curves according to ASTM G59 and determine the mass loss due to corrosion and mechanical wear Electrical contact resistance during the friction between the ball and disc is measured using a voltage drop method. The ball and disc holders are made of non-conductive materials. Microscope with 100 x magnification and a X and Y stage to determine the mean wear scar diameter of the ball in the ball holder. Principle of Operation Ducom HFRR is a ball on disc type tribometer (see Fig. 3). The ball is driven by a motor and cam system to achieve a fixed stroke length of 1 mm and at variable reciprocating frequency. The disc is fixed inside a fluid cell which is heated externally by a pair of resistive heaters. The fluid cell is connected to a flexure carrying a piezoelectric sensor, that is used to measure the friction force generated at the ball on disc interface. Ball is loaded on the disc using the dead weights. This entire unit is enclosed in an environment chamber with a humidity control system. Figure 3. User Convenience Modular system: Ducom HFRR can be upgraded with any of the optionals (as mentioned above) and at any time after the purchase. Applicable for multidisciplinary research: HFRR is known for investigating the diesel lubricity in accordance with the ASTM and ISO standard. However, the wide range of functional features in Ducom HFRR offers test solutions beyond the prescribed standards. Therefore it can be useful for investigating the other lubricants like engine oils and grease. Low maintenance cost: Ducom instruments with high value design features enables low maintenance cost for the users. For example, a flexure can accommodate both the heating system and a piezoelectric (friction) sensor therefore very few components involved in the operations. In addition, any online customer support is at free of cost. Instrument control and Data acquisition The operating parameters in Ducom HFRR is controlled by a labview based WinDucom software (see Fig. 4). It acquires and displays the friction force, friction coefficient, temperature and humidity. Operating frequency and load has to be manually entered into the software. Results of different tests can be superimposed for comparative viewing. Data can be exported to other file formats including excel CSV. Figure 4.
