Section 1: Introduction Thank you for purchasing our version of BMW s Bluetooth wireless technology ULF interface. This interface is designed to provide full integration of your BMW s built in mobile phone capabilities and your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Below is a list of components that you should have received from us or have purchased separately. This document is designed to be a supplement to the BMW ULF Installation manual included with your kit. You will need the following components to complete the installation: BMW ULF Modified interface module with wiring harness BMW Installation kit (optional not recommended for the E46) BMW Microphone BMW ULF Installation guide and user manuals Installation bracket(s) (optional and available separately) SES Jumper plug (if required, not included) This kit provides integration of a Bluetooth enabled phone with the car s stereo for radio mute and use of the built in BMW cell phone speakers. The BMW microphone is also utilized. The steering wheel buttons work for answering a call and hanging up, as well as activating voice dial (Technically, Voice command functionality is only supported on post 6/00 build date sedans, wagons, and coupes and is not supported on any 3 series convertible, however we have found some vehicles do support it) and volume control during a call. Full support of the BMW OEM Bluetooth phone interface is offered through this product, including phonebook upload and caller id. Section 2. Installation of the BMW Microphone Installation of the BMW microphone requires removal of the overhead console cover so as to access the wiring for the mic. Below are pictures of the steps for removal of the cover Gently pry apart the overhead light panel from the back of the panel using a small screwdriver or other suitable tool (butter knife). Everything is mounted in the trunk (except the microphone of course) and there are no wires to run. No wires to cut and no re-programming at the dealer required. It will just work! If you purchased the cradle/installation kit option, please refer to the enclosed BMW Installation guide for installation of this part in your center console. Note that if you did not purchase this option, please ignore the entire discussion regarding the center console in the BMW installation guide.

Using just finger pressure, pull down the cover plate that has the microphone grill in it. Here is the mic as you are ready to press it into the grill. Note that the arrow should point toward the front of the vehicle. Reinstall the cover and light panel in the reverse order of removal. Note that the factory position is for the microphone to be on the passenger side. You may wish to move this to the driver s side by swapping the sunroof switch and the microphone this should increase the loudness of your voice. Locate the correct three conductor wire. It will be a black connector and should have one wire that in clear in color. Detach the wire from the cable holders so that you have enough wire to reach where the mic goes. Connect the microphone. This is the only installation step you need to perform in the cabin. Please disregard the extensive BMW documentation about installing a pairing switch and the Bluetooth antenna you do not need to do this nor anything that requires taking your center console apart.

Section 3. Installation of the ULF Module and Harness Lets get to the trunk and locate the cabling you will need to have access to. We will be working on the driver s side (left) of the trunk. You will need a small flathead screwdriver to remove the clips so as to pull back the cover panel. Vehicle pictured is a 2000 323 if you have a newer vehicle you may have an access port or holes for the optional nav system and/or CD changer. Installation is much the same however a bracket can be used to mount the ULF see your BMW dealer for the correct item. In this photo you will notice that the taillight housing has been removed do this by squeezing the tab on the side of the housing. Newer cars have a small knob that you will turn to remove the housing. Pry off the black retaining clips and save for reassembly. There should be two or three. Begin prying away the liner it is stiff and will require a bit of effort.

Here is what we are looking for! Our connector also only has 24pins not 26 you will leave the end two un-used (the two on the end opposite the wire loom entrance). See further down for another photo of proper connection. You will note that your cable (at the end that connects to the car) MAY have a single extra wire that is taped back on the cable. This connector is used in only a very few applications. Please do not use or install this connector without direction from EIS. ULF module will mount on top of CD changer. You will need the following extra parts if you choose this option and don t have a CD changer or nav. 65-12-8-370-924 Carrier Front 65-12-8-370-932 Carrier Rear 65-12-8-370-925 Bracket CD Changer

Mounting is at the customer s discretion. BMW Part numbers for mounting brackets are as follows: E46 Touring Bracket 84136924698 E46 Bracket w/o Amp 84136924550 Early 3 series vehicles without a CD changer or nav system have no bracket available for them. You have a choice of purchasing the CD changer bracket AND a new trunkliner (with the access hole, see above pictures) or using tiewraps to secure the ULF module and the Bluetooth antenna. Please refer to the enclosed BMW installation guide for proper attachment of the ULF bracket if you choose to use it. Here is a picture of the ULF mounted on the bracket. Attach the wiring harness from the ULF to the car: Attach Harness to the BMW harness BE CERTAIN to align it correctly pin 1 to pin 1! Pay attention to which way is up in the photo to determine pin 1. Leave the two pins on the end empty! NOTE: Please be aware that some later (6/2000 and newer) E46 3 series cars were delivered without what is called an SES jumper plug. This is a blue plug that attaches to the blue 26pin connector in the same area as the 26 pin black connector you just found for using our interface. This plug is necessary for your kit to function. If you have a blue connector without one of these attached to it, you will need to purchase one. It is BMW part number: 84110018038 and it costs around $10.00. It will look like one of these: Back to the business of getting this to work. As you have no doubt perused the included BMW installation guide, you may have noticed a section regarding removal of some wires and pins from the Car side connector. You do not need to do this. Our kit is designed simply to plug in and work. Clean up and cut tiewraps (not included) and you are ready to test.

Section 4: Configuration and testing PAIRING: You have completed the hard part, now lets check to make sure it all works and pair your phone to your car. 1. Lets go ahead and verify that the system is working thus far. With everything connected in the trunk, turn on the ignition (do not start the car), wait a few seconds for the new phone system to be recognized. If you press the R/T or talk button, the message NO PHONE should be displayed on the radio display. If so, you are ready to move forward. Turn you ignition back off. 2. First, get out the manual for your telephone we can t begin to list all procedures for the plethora of Bluetooth compatible phones out there. 3. You will need to enable BT (Bluetooth) on your phone. 4. Get your phone on the page that encompasses pairing with a handsfree or headset device. 5. If you purchased the optional BMW installation kit and have installed the cradle/pairing button in the armrest then follow the pairing instructions that came with the installation kit. This section is designed to aid in the pairing process for those that chose not to install the cradle. 6. Find the toggle switch on the side of the ULF module you will see that there are two settings, PAIR and NORM. 7. With the ignition off. Set this switch to PAIR. Then, go back to the driver s seat and turn on the ignition (make sure you have set the parking brake and do not start the car). Ok, now (while the ignition is still on) go back to the toggle switch and set it to NORM. Upon returning to the driver s seat you should be ready to begin the pairing process on your phone. 8. You phone should find a device called BMW ULF, select this and enter the passkey that is located on the ULF unit itself. After pairing, connect to the BMW ULF from the phone (you will only need to do this once) after this, the phone and car will automatically connect at startup). The display on the radio should say SUCCEEDED. 9. Once this is complete, your phone and the car are linked. The phone and the car will automatically connect and you will be ready to place and receive calls. There are likely other options for your specific phone, including the choice whether to pair automatically. Review these and set them to your liking it may take a bit of trial and error to determine the best settings for your needs. You are now set to go. Note that phonebook upload does not occur immediately, it can take a while for this to occur and requires that the phone and car be connected for a while to complete the upload (for me it took about 20 minutes of driving around and then the phonebook was done). Not all phones support automatic phonebook upload and your phone may require manual transfer. There are a number of inherent factors and variables in phone/bt compatibility, voice recognition ability, audio quality, and RF interference for which we cannot be held responsible; nor to which do we make any guarantee.

Section 5: Warranty Information We stand behind every module we produce and we want you to feel that you have made a sound decision to purchase from us. We are grateful that you have taken one further step to safer driving and encourage you to remember that your first priority is always to driving your car, being attentive, and being safe. We warrant this product against defects in material and workmanship as follows: Your module is backed by our 90 day performance warranty this includes repair or replacement for failures resulting from defects in manufacture. If, upon return of product, it is determined to be defective, European Integrated Systems, Ltd. ( EIS ) will repair or replace the Product at no charge during the warranty period. EIS will also provide free software upgrades if they become available during your warranty period. This warranty does not cover cosmetic damage or damage due to improper installation, to acts of God, accident, misuse, abuse, negligence, commercial use, or modification of, or to any part of the Product. Product Disclaimer Repair or replacement as provided under the warranty (above) is the exclusive remedy of the consumer. EIS shall not be liable for any incidental damage, including but not limited to damage, real or perceived, to your vehicle due to installation and use of this product, or consequential damages for breach of any expressed or implied warranty on this product. Except to the extent prohibited by applicable law. To the extent permitted by law, all warranties are waived, other than the warranty stated above. The warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are waived to the extent provided by law. We cannot guarantee that you will have perfect success in voice dial recognition this is a function of not only the BT module but also the phone itself and the conditions (background noise). Road and wind noise play a factor as well. We also provide you with the opportunity to return your kit within 30 days if the product fails to do what we say it will do. Refund of the purchase price less 5% restocking charge will be refunded via the method of purchase. We cannot be held responsible for failures resulting from installation errors or modifications.
