Daylight Rechargeable Portable Light DH367 Please retain these instructions for future reference. These instructions are also available in other formats. Special warning Please note: Do not look directly at LEDs. When using this light the best position is to have it positioned below eye level between you and what you are doing. It is important to have the light shade below eye level to prevent glare. Also the amount of illumination on an object increases fourfold if the distance between the light and the object is halved. Remember to keep some background lighting on as well as it will help prevent eye strain. Using lighting correctly, wherever you need it, can make a big difference to the amount you can see. General description Sturdy, with a modern silver-coloured satin finish, this light will work for up to six hours from just one charge. Perfect for portability and ideal for use when reading, writing and doing your favourite tasks around the home. This light simply switches on and off when the light is opened and closed. Items supplied with the Daylight Rechargeable Portable Light 1 x light with battery pre-installed 1 x UK power supply Orientation The front of the light is flat and smooth to the touch, and the majority of the front is the shade, which opens to a maximum 180-degree angle. At the top of the light is the carry handle, which has two round hinges at either side. There is a recessed area at the top, on the back of the light so the handle can rest flush against the light when not in use. The handle can be rotated so it is in direct line of the light. Located centrally on the back of the light, are two holes. The smaller one is the charging LED, which illuminates to inform you how much charge the light has left. The 1

larger hole, below the battery charge LED is the power socket. This is where the connector of the power supply is inserted. On the base of the light, in each corner are non-slip feet, to help prevent the light moving unnecessarily on a flat surface. There is also the battery compartment which houses the rechargeable battery. This is secured with four small Philips head screws. Getting started Charging your light We recommend that the battery should be fully charged before using the light for the first time. Place the light, with the shade closed, in an upright position on a solid surface, like a table or workbench. Caution: The light must be charged in the upright position or the battery could be damaged and cause a potential hazard. Plug the connector of the power unit into the socket on the back of the light. Plug the power unit into a convenient electrical socket and switch on. The charge indicator light on the back of the light will show the charge status of the battery (see The charge indicator explained in Using the product section for more details). If the charge indicator is green the light may be used. Otherwise, leave the power unit connected to the light and charge until the indicator turns green. It will take approximately 16 hours to reach full charge. Disconnect the power unit from the light and the electrical socket and store in a safe place. When fully charged, the light will operate for up to six hours. Using the product Using the light with battery power To use your light using battery power, simply place onto a solid surface and open the shade. The light will turn on automatically. When the shade is closed the light will turn off. Using the light with the mains power To use your light powered from an electrical socket, place the light on a solid surface, re-connect the power unit and switch on. When the shade is opened the light will come on and the battery will charge at a reduced rate. The light may be used continuously in 2

this mode. When the shade is closed the light will go out and the battery will charge normally. The LEDs produce a light that is very similar to daylight and some people find reading with this type of light much easier. Because of the daylight effect colours under the light appear very much as they would do in natural daylight. The charge indicator explained Your light is fitted with a useful charge indicator to show the charge status of the battery. Please note: The charge indicator will only operate when the power unit is connected to the light. The colours indicate the following: Red the battery is low and needs charging. The light may only operate for a short time. Green the battery is fully charged and will operate for up to 6 hours. Please note: You may stop charging at any time and use the light but the running time will be reduced. Replacing the battery Some sighted assistance may be required when changing the battery. The light is supplied with a 12V 2.6AH maintenance-free, sealed lead acid battery. The battery can be re-charged approximately 800 times before it needs to be changed. Caution: The battery should only be replaced with one of the same type and rating otherwise you could damage your light and invalidate your guarantee. Batteries can be obtained from your local Daylight stockist code D68020 1. Disconnect the light from the power unit and close the shade. 2. Place the light on its side on a solid surface protected by a cloth. 3. Undo the four small screws on the base of the unit taking note of their position. 4. Remove the base of the light it may be necessary to slightly tilt the light to do this. Note: Do not allow the battery terminals to be shorted. 5. Remove the battery from its compartment and remove both leads from the battery. This may be done by holding the insulated connector, and pulling whilst rocking gently from side to side. 6. The old battery should be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner see Information and Safety section. 3

7. Connect the new battery to the light. The red lead should be connected to the red positive battery terminal and the black lead to the black negative terminal. Hold the insulated lead connector, align with the battery terminal and push fully into place. Ensure insulators are in place over the connectors. It is recommended that a sighted person assists with this operation. 8. Insert the battery into the light taking care that the leads don t get trapped between the battery and the housing. Push the battery fully into place. 9. Replace the light base ensuring that the screws are put back into the correct holes and tightened. Caution: Do not over tighten the screws. Caution: Do not operate the light without the battery. Technical specification Battery or mains operated Charge status indicator Average lumens 520 Up to six hours of portable light when fully charged Height 300mm (11.8 inches) Weight 1500g without packaging Hints and Tips If the light does not work please check the following: Is the battery charged? Plug in the power unit and check the colour of the charge indicator see The charge indicator explained section. Is the battery is properly connected? see Replacing the battery section. Is the power unit jack fully inserted into the light? In the unlikely event of the shade becoming loose, remove the pivot end cap using the end of a straight paper clip. (The pivot end cap, also referred to as the round hinge in the Orientation section is the round pivot that is connected to the carry handle). There is a small access hole in the middle of the edge cap to enable removal (this is the right pivot with the back of the light facing towards you). Tighten the screw sufficiently until the shade holds in position. Do not over tighten. Replace the end cap. Safety and cleaning Caution - if the cable becomes damaged, the light should not be used and the cable should be replaced by a suitably qualified person (qualified electrician). After removing from mains power supply, the light can be cleaned with a duster or damp (not wet) cloth containing a mild soap solution and then dry with a soft cloth. Do not use spray cleaners or large amounts of liquid. 4

General safety The light will become warm in use due to internal electronics. This is quite normal. Caution: Do not cover the light while in use. Caution: Do not open or tamper with the light other than advised in these instructions. You could expose yourself to high voltages or other risks. Caution: Do not expose the product to water or damp conditions such as bathrooms or wet hands. Caution: Do not expose the product to direct sunlight. Caution: Only use the power unit that was supplied with the light. Use of another type will invalidate your guarantee and may damage your light. Caution: If the external flexible cable of this light becomes damaged it should exclusively be replaced by a suitably qualified person in order to avoid any hazard. In case of doubt consult a qualified electrician. Battery information and safety The battery will take approximately 16 hours to fully charge from a completely discharged condition. The light will operate for up to six hours from a fully charged condition after which the light will automatically turn off to protect the battery and the electronics. The light may be charged at any time. The time to fully charge will depend on how much capacity remains in the battery. If the battery is regularly discharged until the light automatically goes out the battery capacity and overall battery life will be reduced. For maximum performance the battery should be charged before it is fully depleted. The battery can be stored for up to 12 months without use but we recommend that the light is fully charged before long term storage and ideally every six months to ensure maximum battery performance. If the light has not been used for an extended period we recommend that it is charged before use. Caution: The battery is a high-energy source so ensure that the terminals are not shorted by any conductive material. Caution: Do not expose to heat, flame or water. 5

Caution: The battery must always be connected using the correct polarity. Failure to do this will damage the light and may cause leakage of electrolyte or explosion. Caution: Do not drop, strike or attempt to disassemble the battery as this could cause leakage of electrolyte. Caution: If the battery becomes damaged electrolyte contacts skin or clothing wash immediately with water. If electrolyte contacts eye flush with water and seek immediate medical attention. The rechargeable battery supplied with this product can be re-cycled at the end of its useful life. Do not dispose of with normal domestic waste.
