Instruction Sheet P/N 107967E Standard and Conical AN Series Air Spray Nozzles Introduction The Nordson air spray nozzles described in this instruction sheet are categorized by their type of spray pattern: standard and conical. The air spray nozzle parts listed here are interchangeable on all Nordson AN series electrostatic air spray guns. Application Recommendations When selecting a nozzle, consider the type of coating material application. Some general system recommendations for typical applications are listed here: Manual spray applications (small- to medium-sized parts): Flow rates of 0.12 0.31 l/min (4 10 oz/min) Fan-pattern widths of 15.24 30.48 cm (6 12 in.) High electrostatic efficiency Manual spray applications (large parts): Flow rates of 0.30 0.60 l/min (10 20 oz/min) Fan-pattern widths of 30.48 45.72 cm (12 18 in.) Used for automotive applications Automatic spray applications (small- to medium-sized parts): Flow rates of 0.24 0.35 l/min (8 12 oz/min) Fan-pattern widths of 20.32 30.48 cm (8 12 in.) Relatively high electrostatic efficiency Automatic spray applications (fixed gun): Low flow rates Wide and critical fan-pattern widths Split air spray guns Automotive type metallic coatings for critical color matching applications Contact your Nordson representative or distributor for additional information. 2001 Nordson Corporation Manual 22-1
2 Standard and Conical AN Series Air Spray Nozzles Maintenance WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Turn off the electrostatics and power supply and ground the fluid supply before performing this maintenance procedure. Failure to observe this warning may result in personal injury, death, or equipment damage. WARNING: System or material pressurized. Relieve pressure. Failure to observe this warning may result in serious injury or death. Set up and follow a regular air spray nozzle cleaning schedule. A clogged or damaged air spray nozzle usually results in faulty spray patterns. Perform the following steps: 1. Turn off the electrostatic power supply. 2. Ground the fluid supply to the spray gun. (Refer to the appropriate fluid delivery system manual.) 3. Relieve fluid and air pressure in the fluid delivery system. (Refer to the appropriate fluid delivery system manual.) NOTE: Always point the gun down when removing nozzles to prevent paint and solvents from entering the air passages. 4. See Figure 1. Remove the retaining ring. 5. For standard spray nozzles, remove the air cap. Use the supplied Nordson wrench to remove the fluid tip and the diffuser ring (if used). 6. For conical spray nozzles, remove the cap and nozzle. Use an open-end wrench to remove the valve seat. Manual 22-1 2001 Nordson Corporation
Standard and Conical AN Series Air Spray Nozzles 3 WARNING: Never use halogenated hydrocarbon solvents to clean aluminum parts or to flush any system. Cleaning agents, coatings and paints, or adhesives may contain halogenated hydrocarbons solvents. Obtain and read the MSDS for each material and solvent being used. 7. Soak all air spray nozzle parts in a compatible solvent to dissolve any accumulated coatings. CAUTION: Do not use metal objects to clean a nozzle. This may cause damage that will result in faulty spray patterns. 8. Carefully clean the air spray nozzle with a soft bristle brush or a wooden toothpick. 9. Inspect and replace any damaged parts. 10. Let the air spray nozzle parts air dry or blow them dry using a clean, low-pressure air source. 11. To install standard nozzles, perform the following steps: a. See Figure 1. Insert the fluid tip (6) through the diffuser ring (5). b. Trigger the spray gun. Thread the fluid tip into the extension (4). Use the Nordson wrench supplied with the spray gun to tighten the tip 1 / 4 turn beyond hand tight. c. Place the air cap (7) on top of the fluid tip. Hand-tighten the retaining ring (8) onto the extension. 12. To install conical nozzles, perform the following steps: a. See Figure 1. Trigger the spray gun. Thread the valve seat (3) into the extension (4). Use an open-end wrench to secure the seat. b. Place the nozzle (2) on top of the valve seat. c. Place the cap (1) over the nozzle. Hand-tighten the retaining ring (8) onto the extension. 2001 Nordson Corporation Manual 22-1
