SELF CONCEPT

Self-Concept The total picture a person has of him/herself. It is a combination of: traits values thoughts feelings that we have for ourselves (self-esteem)

Self-Esteem Feelings you have for yourself from moment to moment, experience to experience. Changes often Influenced by: People Experiences Expectations

Important Points A child is born with 100% self-esteem A person s self concept is developed early in life and affects the way that person functions in his/her environment. Children develop self-concepts through what they believe the important people in their life feel about them. Self-concept can evolve and change throughout life.

Self-Concept Cycle

How the cycle works.. As I see myself is formed largely by our own perception of what others think of us. This influences our actions Our actions in large part determine how others actually do see us and directly influence their reactions to us in return. Their reactions again, influence the way we see ourselves. This is a continuous cycle in our lives.

Self-Concept Some people have positive self concepts which make them feel capable and competent. Their actions demonstrate those feelings, and others react positively to their actions, which, in turn validates those feelings. Other people have negative self concepts which cause them to lack confidence in their abilities. These negative feelings affect their actions and others in turn will react negatively to their actions, this time validating negative self feelings.

Promoting Self-Esteem in Children Providing successful experiences for the child Treating children with Love & Respect Objecting to BEHAVIOR - not the CHILD. Praising the child for achievements. Avoiding Competition - always a loser. Set individual goals for each child. Giving children room to achieve & explore. Letting them make mistakes and then learning from them Allowing children to make choices whenever possible. Helping children to understand their feelings. Releases for emotions

Showing a basic feeling of worth & dignity toward children. Children need respect Providing for productive & creative work. music-art-drama-poetry and literature Listening to children and talking with them. Active Listening: eye contact - let them know they are heard Clear Messages - let child know exactly what is expected of him/her Guidelines for Behavior. Guiding through Love instead of Fear or Guilt. Encouraging Independence. Don t do anything for a child that he can do for himself! Avoid Power Struggles. Be a Good Role Model. Nicknames - be positive - we become what we hear we are. Let children overhear positive comments about them.
