Application Match Matched payloads and matched buckets ensure optimum performance. Truck match. From counterweight to bucket, the 970F Material Handler is designed for fast, economical moving and loading of stockpile material in 2nd gear. The 970F s dump-clearance geometry and payload characteristics allow loading of most U.S. on-highway trucks in three passes and European trucks in four. This payload match characteristic increases operating efficiency, enabling the 970F to handle materials at a cost per ton lower than general purpose loaders. Bucket match. Buckets for the 970F are matched to the truck size and to the material densities common in aggregates. The 970F offers a material handling bucket with a straight-edge, flat-floor design for greater penetration into tightly packed stockpile material. General purpose buckets with shelltine design are also available. Material handling buckets are designed with long, flat floors that enable them to penetrate the most tightly packed stockpiles. These buckets are built for optimum payload and load retention, resulting in faster cycle times and lower operating costs. All material handling buckets include universal edges drilled out at the factory to accept a wide variety of bolt-on cutting edges, adapters, and segments. This wide range of payloads and buckets gives customers the flexibility to match the machine to the job, ensuring increased production and optimum performance. General purpose buckets are built with a shell-tine construction that resists twisting and distortion. Replaceable, bolt-on wear plates protect the bucket bottom. Patented Cat Corner Guard Cutting Edge System protects the corners for longterm wear. Universal edges accept bolt-on corner and center adapters and segments or cutting edges for easy conversion to a tooth system or an edge system for loose material applications. 5

Support System Superior construction provides a well-balanced system. System balance. All structural components of the 970F are integrated to form a stable, well-balanced system for material handling applications. Frame, linkage, lift arms and counterweight all work together to move the loaded bucket smoothly and effortlessly throughout its full range. 1 Full box-section frame absorbs shock and twisting forces while supporting rigid component alignment. 2 Spread-hitch design provides strength in the articulation area, reduces stress on the hitch pins and roller bearings, and uses castings in high stress areas to provide better distribution of stress loads. 3 Thirty-five degree center-point articulation allows cycling in tight quarters. 4 Full four-plate loader tower provides rigid mounting for lift arms, resists stress and protects hydraulic cylinders and lines from damage by debris. 5 Lift arms are made of solid steel to stand up to any stress load. 6 Cast cross tube provides extra rigidity and maintains pin bore alignment. 7 Z-bar loader linkage gives the 970F tremendous breakout force in all materials. The streamlined design with fewer pivot points and sealing to maintain pin lubrication allows for longer maintenance intervals. Cast tilt lever and forged tilt link efficiently transmit high breakout forces from the tilt cylinder. 7 6

Power Train The Cat power train gets the job done smoothly and quickly. Productivity. The 970F s power train is a cohesively designed package featuring rated gross engine power of 187 kw (250 hp) and a full match torque converter that smoothly matches rimpull and speed to ground conditions. Caterpillar 3306 engine. The 970F performs at full-rated gross power of 187 kw (250 hp). Electronic power management in first gear reduces engine power to 172 kw (230 hp) when engine loads are reduced. The benefits of this system are a more responsive machine with lower fuel consumption in most first gear applications. The four-stroke cycle design delivers long power strokes and high torque rise. The turbocharged and aftercooled, high-pressure direct fuel injected 3306 engine provides efficient response with unmatched fuel economy. Planetary power shift transmission with automatic shift capability allows on-the-go shifting with pushbutton downshift control. Its shift points have been preset at the factory so that each shift occurs at optimum torque for the most efficient and economical operation. 1 Heavy duty axles and brakes are designed to last in all kinds of operating conditions. Oil-disc brakes are adjustment free and fully enclosed to lock out contaminants that accelerate wear. Oscillating rear axle ensures four-wheel ground contact for traction and stability, even on rugged terrain. 2 Optional limited-slip differentials and NoSpin rear differential are available to deliver maximum traction on uneven ground and in changing traction conditions such as mud, snow and ice. 3306 TA 7

Hydraulics Powerful hydraulics are matched to the 970F s speed. Matched hydraulics. The main hydraulics of the 970F have been sized to keep up with the speed of the machine in 2nd gear, matching the higher speeds necessary for fast cycle times in truck loading operations. Low Effort implement control. A new pilot control valve enables the operator to move the control lever with minimum effort. This reduces operator fatigue while providing quick response and precise control. Automatic Ride Control. The 970F material handler features an optional automatic ride control system through a nitrogen oil accumulator in the hydraulic-lift circuit. By flipping a switch, the operator can turn the automatic ride control on or off, or put it in automatic and let the system do the job. In automatic, the system is activated when the speed exceeds 9.7 kph (6 mph) and deactivated at speeds below 9.7 kph (6 mph), resulting in better movement into the stockpile, more efficient lifting and loading, and greater productivity. 1 Large-bore lift and tilt cylinders ensure efficient load handling. 2 Cat s XT-3 hydraulic hose is exceptionally strong and flexible. Reusable couplings prolong the hose assembly s life. O-Ring Face Seals (ORFS) provide positive, dry sealing. 8

Payload Measurement System Fast, on-the-go weighing system eliminates guesswork. The Caterpillar Payload Measurement System is an integral part of the entire 970F loading system, ensuring that the 970F does what it is designed to do load trucks quickly and accurately. The Caterpillar Payload Measurement System is the only truly on-the-go system available on the market today. It takes the guesswork out of loading by allowing operators to load trucks more accurately. It minimizes the time wasted adjusting or reweighing under- or over-loaded trucks, resulting in improved efficiency, higher production, and lower operating costs. It tells the operator when a truck is full before it leaves the loader. Every truck gets a maximum load the first time, with no turnarounds. In real world conditions, with onhighway aggregate trucks, the Cat System has demonstrated ± 3% accuracy on full-truck payloads. It weighs on-the-go during the lift cycle, so the operating cycle is not affected. It weighs at rest, to allow reweighs or partial dumps for exact truckloads. A rotary position sensor on the lift tower and a hydraulic pressure sensor tapped into the hydraulic lift cylinder line measure the position velocity and pressure of the lift cylinders. Information from the sensor feeds a microcomputer, which quantifies the data and sends the results to a monitor in the cab. A simple, two-button console lets the operator clear the display, start new weighing cycles, store truck weights, and display the weights in any of six modes. The memory accumulates the weight and number of bucket loads per truck, the number of truck loads per shift and total production per shift. Calibration is a simple, fiveminute process. The conveniently located two-button console is integrated into the right hand console. It is easy to reach because of its close proximity to the implement controls. 9

1 Exceptional all-around visibility reduces strain and fatigue, making operators more productive. 2 Caterpillar Monitoring System with electronic analog gauges is a highly effective and reliable diagnostic system. As a warning system, it constantly checks machine functions and tells the operator when there s a problem. Easy-to-read gauges display fuel level, temperatures for coolant, transmission and hydraulic oil, alternator output, machine speed, engine RPM and gear range. Also displays hour meter, odometer and optional digital speedometer readings. As a diagnostic system, it identifies conditions, shows current readings and plays back readings registered during recent operations. 3 Automatic shift control allows the operator to concentrate on the work, not gear selection. Preset factory shift points ensure each shift occurs at optimum torque. A switch allows the operator to select either automatic or manual shifting. The low-effort shift control allows one-hand shifting for speed or directional changes. 4 Quick Gear Kickdown Button lets the operator easily downshift to a lower gear. It's a convenient way to downshift that saves time, increases bucket fill factors and lowers cycle times. 5 Steering column adjusts to multiple positions. The leather-like steering wheel and transmission control provide a sure grip and comfortable feel. The horn is conveniently located in the center of the steering wheel. 6 Transmission neutralizer lockout switch enables the left or right brake pedal to be used as a brake/neutralizer or brake only. Switch is on the right hand console. 7 Convenient low effort bucket controls allow for precise bucket loading and dumping. Optional third valve and control are available. 8 New Contour Series Seat is designed for comfort and support. Seat cushions reduce pressure on the lower back and thighs while allowing unrestricted arm and leg movement. 9 Built-in storage space is designed to hold cups, lunch box, thermos and personal items. 10 Repositioned vents throughout the cab keep fresh air flowing while improving the cab s heating, cooling, defrost and defog capability. Radio Ready means this cab includes 12-volt converter (2-amp), speakers, antenna, all wiring and brackets for entertainment or communications radio installation. Windshield washers/wipers are standard features on front and rear windows. Front wiper has intermittent speed capability and inthe-blade washer delivery system. Optional Payload Measurement System offers on-the-go weighing to assist operators in loading trucks more accurately. 11
