III. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS This chapter contains safety precautions, daily safety check instructions, control and indicator descriptions and operating instructions for the RICON S-Series Export Use Wheelchair and Standee Lift with Folding Platform. This chapter must be thoroughly understood by operator before attempting to use lift. A. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS The following safety precautions must be complied with at all times when operating lift: C Refer to Figure [3-1]. Deploying lift when vehicle is on sloped ground is dangerous. Always operate lift with vehicle parked on level ground. FIGURE [3-1]: DO NOT DEPLOY LIFT WHEN VEHICLE IS ON SLOPED GROUND C Vehicle must be safely parked with parking brake ON before using lift. C Inspect lift prior to each use. If any unsafe condition exists or unusual noises or movements are noticed, DO NOT use and contact an authorized Ricon Dealer for repair. C Read and Comply with all warning labels and symbols affixed to wheelchair lift. C Refer to Figure [3-2]. When using lift, wheelchair occupant should always FACE OUTWARD when entering or exiting vehicle. C Standees should use lift facing the direction of travel; toward vehicle when entering or away from vehicle when exiting. C Never rely on a threshold type warning device as an assurance to allow you to exit vehicle backwards, as this audible device might be inoperative or create a dangerous situation if not heard and you exit backwards when platform is on ground. ALWAYS exit FACING OUTWARD and look to be certain platform is safely at floor level before attempting to exit vehicle. C When exiting vehicle NEVER back onto platform. Always face OUTWARD and make sure that platform is at a safe vehicle floor-level position and outer rollstop is in an up and locked position. FIGURE [3-2]: FACE OUTWARD 3-1

C The platform rollstop is designed to prevent slow inadvertent rolling off platform. The large rear wheels of a wheelchair can roll over platform rollstop, so you should always FACE OUTWARD. Hitting platform rollstop with small front wheels can tip wheelchair and possibly injure wheelchair occupant. Do not expect rollstop to stop a quick moving wheelchair as it is not designed for that purpose. Use extreme care, board platform slowly and then lock wheelchair brakes. C Be certain wheelchair fits safely on platform and does not extend over edges of platform or interfere with operation of rollstop. C Do not operate with a load in excess of 800 lbs. (364 kg). C Do not place arms, legs, or clothing in or near moving parts. C The lift is designed for ONE wheelchair and its occupant. Do not overload lift. C Refer to Figure [3-3]. Keep others clear while operating lift. C Do not allow an untrained person to operate. C Careful supervision is necessary if used by or near children. C Do not allow anyone to stand on bridgeplate. Bending this bridgeplate can cause dangerous interference with platform as its raises or lowers. C Always LOCK WHEELCHAIR BRAKES (power chair users should turn off power and set brake) before lift is operated. C Use extreme care in wet conditions. Wheelchair brakes are less effective if platform or wheelchair wheels are wet. FIGURE [3-3]: STAND CLEAR OF LIFT C Never leave platform outside of vehicle. Always return lift to stowed position after use. C Do not place equipment or furniture inside vehicle that prevents you from rotating your wheelchair to properly and safely exit vehicle facing outward. C Do not use a wheelchair on this wheelchair lift that is too large for the vehicle. The wheelchair should be able to rotate freely inside vehicle such that wheelchair lift instructions for entering and exiting vehicle can be properly followed. Be sure that these safety precautions have been read and understood. Review them periodically, and ask any attendants or other operators to read them as well. If there are any questions, contact an authorized Ricon Dealer or call the Ricon Service Department. B. DAILY SAFETY CHECK Inspect lift before each use and check that following conditions are met before operating: C All functions operate properly. If unusual noises or movements exist, DO NOT use and contact an authorized Ricon Dealer for repair. C Vehicle interlock is operating properly. C No objects that may interfere with operation are present. C General appearance and lubrication are satisfactory and all fasteners are tight. 3-2

C. LIFT FUNCTIONS TABLE [3-1]: LIFT FUNCTIONS FUNCTION DEPLOY DOWN UP STOW DESCRIPTION Platform unfolds/deploys out of vehicle from stowed position. (If equipped with Ricon power door operator, the door(s) automatically open before lift deploys). Platform is lowered from vehicle floor level position to ground level. (The rollstop automatically lowers when platform reaches ground level). Platform is raised from ground level to vehicle floor level. (The rollstop automatically raises when platform leaves ground level). Platform folds/stows from vehicle floor level to stowed position. (If equipped with Ricon power door operator, the door(s) automatically close after lift stows). END OF TABLE FIGURE [3-4]: PLATFORM POSITIONS NOTE THE UP AND DOWN FUNCTIONS DO NOT OPERATE IF PLATFORM IS IN STOWED POSITION. 3-3

D. CONTROLS AND INDICATORS WARNING THE LIFT IS ALLOWED TO OPERATE ONLY WHEN VEHICLE MANUFACTURER S INTERLOCK CIRCUITRY IS ACTIVATED. NEVER ATTEMPT TO OPERATE LIFT WITH INTERLOCK BYPASSED. REFER TO VEHICLE OWNER/OPERATOR MANUAL FOR INTERLOCK INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING LIFT. 1. CONTROL PENDANT Refer to Figure [3-5]. The lift is controlled with a hand held, hard-wired remote control pendant. It has two dual-position rocker switches. The lift functions are performed by pushing and holding one end of an appropriate switch. Pushing DEPLOY switch unfolds lift from vehicle and pushing STOW switch folds platform into vehicle. Pushing DOWN switch lowers lift towards ground and pushing UP switch raises lift towards floor. The pendant is stowed on a wall-clip inside vehicle. FIGURE [3-5]: CONTROL PENDANT 2. ELECTRICAL CONTROLS AND INDICATORS FIGURE [3-6]: INDICATOR LIGHT/CIRCUIT BREAKERS a. Interlock Indicator Light Refer to Figure [3-6]. The purpose of a vehicle interlock system is to prevent operation of lift if an unsafe condition is present. When vehicle interlock systems are interfaced with lift circuitry, the interlock indicator shows whether or not interlock is operating properly. The light is interfaced with electrical system so that no matter which interlock system/method is used, the light will be ON when interlock allows electrical power to lift and OFF when interlock has disabled power to lift. When there is no interlock system installed, the light stays illuminated at all times. 3-4

CAUTION REMINDER TO RICON DEALER: NEVER REPLACE A CIRCUIT BREAKER WITH ONE OF GREATER AMPERAGE, OR WITH A PIECE OF WIRE. LOCATE AND REPAIR SHORT CIRCUIT TO CORRECT PROBLEM. b. Circuit Breaker for Optional Door Operator Refer to Figure [3-6]. The circuit breaker for optional door operator is found on hydraulic pump assembly. In case of a door operator short circuit, the circuit breaker button will pop-out. If pressing and releasing button does not reset/restore power, DO NOT press and hold. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair. Refer to appropriate Ricon Remote Power Door Operator Service/Owner Manual for a detailed description. c. Control System Circuit Breaker Refer to Figure [3-6]. The Control System Circuit Breaker is found on hydraulic pump assembly. In case of a control system short circuit, circuit breaker button will pop-out. If pressing and releasing button does not reset/restore power, DO NOT press and hold. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair. d. Main Circuit Breaker Refer to Figure [3-7]. The main circuit breaker is located in vehicle engine compartment and is designed to interrupt electrical power to lift electrical system when a short circuit occurs. In the event of a short circuit, the circuit breaker reset tab will flip-down. If pressing reset tab UP and releasing does not restore power, DO NOT press and hold tab. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair. 3. MANUAL BACKUP PUMP FIGURE [3-7]: MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER Refer to Figure [3-8]. The manual backup pump is used to operate lift if electrical power is not functional. The controls for pump consist of pump handle for raising lift platform and a pump release valve for lowering it. Instructions for operating manual pump are provided in the MANUAL OPERATION paragraph, which is part of the LIFT OPERATION section in this chapter. FIGURE [3-8]: MANUAL BACKUP PUMP & HANDLE 3-5
