The aim of optimization design is to reduce the amount of PV modules used as much as possible on the basis of fulfilling the water head and capacity requirement. The rotational speed of the pump can be regulated according to the actual irradiation: when the irradiation reaches its peak, the pump runs at the rated speed and the output power of the solar array approaches the peak; when the irradiation is less abundant, the pump runs in MPPT mode; when the pump has no water capacity, the system stops working. Thus, this pumping system is very different from traditional pumping systems in the design, in which the system can be optimized according to the requirements of water head, capacity, and local conditions of irradiation. The pumps can be driven either by only one high-power inverter, or by several matching inverters. In the case of large capacity are demanded, the operation of multi-pumping system is more flexible. By using the switching controller, all pumps run in MPPT mode when the irradiation is abundant; when irradiation is not abundant, some pumps will be shut down and the solar array supply power intensively for the rest running pumps. Based on the optimization of single pump system, the range of speed has been further optimized, and the system always works in high efficiency.
