Suggested text for the exhibition programme, if produced:- Timpdon SM32 (16mm/ft; 32mm gauge) 16mm scale on 32mm gauge track (2 foot narrow gauge) has become very popular in recent years mainly because of the large number of articles published in model railway magazines. These all illustrate live steam engines running through all sizes of garden. This layout tries to show that 16mm modelling can also be taken indoors. Although most people don t want to run live steam engines in their spare bedroom, a workable layout is still possible in a garage, shed or cellar. Both Mamod and Peco make 2 6 radius set-track and as you can see, these tight curves can look quite prototypical with short rolling stock. The layout on show here today depicts a scene at the Timpdon Lake Railway's engine sheds and Wharf Station. It's an Open Day, so all the loco's are on show. Look out for the working scenic dioramas (like camera flashing train-spotters, working swing rail bridge, not to mention a welding repairman, a smoking barbecue, and many more!) There s even a CCTV system in a train giving a passenger s perspective on the public monitor. Although Timpdon has been on the exhibition circuit for over ten years, it has changed considerably during that time. In fact, none of the original baseboards remain and only the odd model person has survived the constant development. After careful consideration it was decided to build the layout on a freelance design. In such limited space it would be impossible to show so much traffic and detail (don t forget an average Ffestiniog train is over 16 feet long in this scale!). Instead, an attempt was made to recreate the atmosphere of several popular narrow gauge lines. However the operators argue that this isn't a "model" railway - it's a real one in its own right! 16mm scale narrow gauge is for everyone - not just the rich. Of course it's possible to buy a ready-to-run steam loco for over a few thousand pounds, but it's also possible to make yourself a small battery operated loco for under five pounds - and that includes the batteries! The operators of the layout all have their own garden line and so will only be too glad to answer questions and offer advice. You can also ask for a leaflet on the 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers' Association. Membership not only puts you in touch with fellow minded railway buffs at various national events, it also provides valuable information to get you started. Again, ask for details or visit us at www.timpdon.co.uk Note for Editors: The above text can be sent by e-mail if required, to save retyping. Excluding the title, there are 416 words. If the narrative is too long, please feel free to edit appropriately.

Size 21 x 9 All necessary operating space is in the middle. Viewing Barriers Scenery is along three sides. You may also, if the design of the exhibition hall permits, have the loco preparation side of the layout open to the public. Experience has shown that members of the public will virtually hang off the rafters to watch loco preparation and ask questions! However it is understood that very few exhibitions are able to afford the option of an island location. Barriers are not specifically requested, but not refused if it is your normal exhibition practice. Live Steam Contrary to some prejudice belief, live 16mm scale steam engines are very clean to run and do not pollute a room with gas, oil, smoke, aids, Chinese flu or any other pollutants which ill-informed rumour dictates. Our loco s only give off a slight whisper of steam and all waste water and oil is carefully drained into our own containers. The heat source is gas, similar to a blow lamp. We do not have any coal fired loco s. They do not set off smoke alarms or heat sensors in a normal size room. The engines do not effect, in any way, the running of other electric powered railways in the same room. Electricity The layout requires mains supply for running the layout lighting and special effects. One socket is adequate as the current is very low. Expenses Changes to the layout now enable it to fit within a very large trailer. I request a contribution of 50 per exhibiting day (not travelling / setting up day) to give the trailer owner (it s cheaper than hiring a van and a lot more convenient!). Reimbursement of diesel costs are required. A receipt will be provided for the journey to the exhibition, the amount on which will be used to estimate the return journey costs. Beware! A LWB Shogun and trailer only does about 22 miles to the gallon! The layout ideally needs three or four operators for safety. It is not unusual for other 16mm Association members, who are paying visitors to the exhibition, to also help out over meal breaks. Accommodation must be provided for exhibitions beyond reasonable commuting distance. The additional operators expenses are 20 or less for most exhibitions. We suggest an additional 10 per day incidental expenses voluntary contribution to cover batteries, gas, oil, etc (it s expensive running steam and battery loco s all weekend). All expenses must be settled in full during the exhibition (and not several months later as was once the case). After all, we re only requesting reimbursement of our expenses and not making a profit. Insurance The layout and stock are already insured for theft by the owner (total value 20,000). The event organisers should insure against public liability. Special insurance requirements do not apply to live steam engines in this scale (eg boiler testing, etc). All known insurance brokers for exhibitions do not impose any special clauses on 16mm steam fired by a controlled heat source (coal fired engines are excluded, but we don t have any of them). All engines are commercially made and conform to SEP (Sound Engineering Practice). The small size of our engines make them exempt from boiler testing legislation. Awards The layout was the 16mm Association s Layout of the Year and is often voted Best in Show by the public at exhibitions. Several of the battery powered locomotives have won national awards at the National Garden Railway Show. Please discuss any additional requirements or areas of concern, which we will endeavour to satisfy.
