4. General Description of Use Function Electric power to the Power Hand 2X Standard Controller is supplied from a 115V or 230V AC source (230V also available). The Controller converts alternating current to direct current (3-30V DC) and automatically supplies the necessary power to the electric handpiece motors according to the speed setting and Station Selector Switch (1) setting. The controller is specifically designed to function with Power Hand 2X handpieces only, so it cannot be used with other types of handpieces. Commissioning A. Select desired Power Hand 2X Handpieces and connect to Output Socket (2 or 5). B. Slide Rotation Switch (8) to the right ( FOR ) for forward rotation and to the left ( REV ) for reverse rotation. The Reverse Rotation Indicator Light (9) comes on when the reverse rotation direction is chosen. C. Check the Specification Plate on the bottom of the Controller to make sure that the voltage from the electric outlet is compatible with the Power Hand unit. Connect the Controller Power Cable (14) to the power supply and push the Station Selector Switch (1) toward the Output Socket of the handpiece you wish to operate. This turns the unit on and lights up the Power Light. To turn handpiece off, slide Selector Switch to center (OFF) position. D. If Overload Indicator Light (6) comes on, depress Overload Reset Button (7). If equipment has been assembled as directed, your Power Hand System is ready for operation. E. For manual handpiece control, the Foot Rheostat Selector Switch (13) on the rear of the Controller must be in the UP position. Manual Slide Rheostat does not control handpiece speed. Select speed by depressing Rheostat. F. To control handpiece by foot, plug Variable-Speed Foot Rheostat or On/Off Foot Switch into Socket (12) at the rear of the controller and slide the Foot Rheostat Selector Switch (13) to the DOWN position. When using the On/Off Foot Switch, the Manual Slide Rheostat is still active. When using the Variable- Speed Foot Rheostat, the Manual Slide Rheostat becomes inactive. 4
5. Controller Features and Safety Devices Rotation Switch The Rotation Switch is located on the front panel of the unit. If you wish to change the direction of handpiece rotation, always switch the Power Switch to OFF before moving the Rotation Switch. A red indicator light to the left of the Rotation Switch will come on when reverse direction has been selected. Follow these instructions for longer handpiece armature life. Overload Reset Button An overload cutoff switch is built into the Power Hand 2X Standard Controller and is designed to prevent overloading of the handpiece DC drive motors. A circuit breaker will shut off current to the motor under one of three conditions: A. The rotor is in a locked condition (this happens when Power Switch is turned on but Handpiece Collet Release Mechanism is in the Release Direction); B. The Collet Release Mechanism moves during handpiece operation; C. The motor overloads. Should overload occur, a red light to the right of the Reset Button will come on. To restart a handpiece motor, depress the Overload Reset Button. Thermal Protection Sensor A Thermal Protection Sensor protects the Standard Controller from damage caused by overheating. This safety device automatically and temporarily shuts the power off under one of two conditions: A. The handpiece overloads; B. The electronic circuitry of the controller overheats. If the Thermal Sensor should activate, it will shut off the power automatically. Should this occur, turn OFF the power switch and allow Controller to cool for approximately 10 minutes. Current flow will automatically begin after this short interval. The unit can then be turned on, and normal operation can be resumed. Electronic Feedback Circuitry Electronic Feedback Circuitry is built into the Gesswein Standard Controller. It is designed to sense handpiece load and maintain constant speed. As load increases on the handpiece, more current is sent to the motor armature to maintain the torque output of the handpiece and the selected speed (RPM). 5
Stand, Carrying Handle and Handpiece Rest As a convenience, the Gesswein Standard Controller has a built-in Flip-Up Stand (17) located under the unit. Use this stand to tilt the Controller for improved viewing of control functions. To use, grasp in the center of the stand and gently pull towards the front of the unit. Stand will lock in place. Push back when not in use. Controller has a retractable Pull-Up Carrying Handle (10) located on the top of the unit. Pull handle up when needed for transportation, then simply push back into place when not needed. A removable Handpiece Holder (11) is supplied with each unit. Slide into its bracket on either side of the Controller. The holder ring may be set at several different angles for convenient handpiece storage and reuse. Additional Handpiece Holders are available. Fuse A standard 2A fuse (1A fuse with 230V model) is used in the Gesswein Standard Controller. Fuse Holder is located on the rear panel. To replace fuse, remove the holder with a Phillips head screwdriver as illustrated. 6. Precautions The internal circuitry of the Standard Controller is cooled by natural convection through ventilation grills located on top of the unit. To prevent overheating and possible damage, do not obstruct or cover these ventilation grills. Always disengage from power outlet by plug, not cord. Unplug unit when not in use for long periods of time. Never move rotation switch while motor is rotating. 6
Introduction The Gesswein Standard Controller is a compact variable-speed power pack that can run any of the Power Hand 2X rotary, reciprocating or belt sanding handpieces. Backed by a full one-year warranty. Two output stations on the Standard Controller are provided as a convenience for operations requiring more than one handpiece. These two stations ensure optimum speed and torque for each of the handpieces. The dual outlets eliminate the need for frequent tool changes. The Station Selector Switch permits rapid change from one outlet to the other. Handpiece speed is controlled by either the Manual Slide Rheostat on the Controller or the optional Foot Rheostat. A Rotation Switch allows the operator to select the required direction of rotation. The Gesswein Standard Controller features a positive motor overload cutoff switch that delivers maximum energy output for each handpiece while providing full motor protection. The electronic feedback circuitry maintains handpiece speed as load increases, and a built-in Thermal Sensor provides circuitry protection. The Gesswein Power Hand 2X handpiece series consists of nine models and eleven head assemblies with maximum operating speeds ranging from 8,000 to 55,000rpm and 0 to 117 strokes per second. All models are identified by their names, which are engraved on the motor housings.
