REAR DRUM BRAKE (1ZZFE(FF)) OVERHAUL HINT: Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures as LH side. 1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL 2. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID NOTICE: Wash the brake fluid off immediately if it comes into contact with any painted surface. 3233 320J701 Contract F42683 3. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUBASSY (a) Release the parking brake lever, and remove the brake drum. HINT: If the brake drum cannot be removed easily, do the following steps. Remove the hole plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster. Using an another screwdriver, reduce the brake shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel. 4. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM INSIDE DIAMETER (a) Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum. Standard inside diameter: 228.6 mm (9.000 in.) Maximum inside diameter: 229.6 mm (9.039 in.) F06408 5. REMOVE FRONT BRAKE SHOE (a) Using, remove the upper side tension spring with spacer. 0992100010 F42684 1914

F42685 Using, remove the cup, shoe holddown sprig and pin. 0971800010 Disconnect the upper side return spring from the front shoe, and remove the front brake shoe. F42686 6. REAR DRUM BRAKE (1ZZFE(FF)) 3235 9. REMOVE REAR BRAKE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUBASSY (a) Using a screwdriver, remove the Cwasher and parking brake shoe lever. F42689 10. INSPECT REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS (a) Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining. Standard thickness: 5.5 mm (0.217 in.) Minimum thickness: 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) If the lining thickness is at the minimum thickness or less, or if there is severe, uneven wear, replace the brake shoe. F42690 11. INSPECT BRAKE DRUM AND REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT (a) Apply chalk to the inside surface of the drum, then grind drum on the brake shoe lining to fit. If the contact between the drum and the shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe assembly. R01564 12. REMOVE LH, FRONT OR UPPER REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY (a) Using, disconnect the brake tube, use a container to catch brake fluid. 0902300100 Remove the 2 bolts and wheel cylinder. F42691 13. REMOVE REAR WHEEL CYLINDER CUP KIT (a) Remove the 2 cylinder dust boots from the wheel cylinder. Remove the 2 pistons and compression spring. Remove the 2 wheel cylinder cups from each piston. Remove the bleeder plug cap and bleeder plug from the wheel cylinder. 14. INSPECT BRAKE WHEEL CYLINDER (a) Check the cylinder bore and piston for rust or scoring. 1916

3236 BRAKE REAR DRUM BRAKE (1ZZFE(FF)) 15. INSTALL REAR WHEEL CYLINDER CUP KIT (a) Temporarily tighten the bleeder plug to the wheel cylinder, and install the bleeder plug cap. (e) Apply the lithium soap base glycol grease to the 2 new wheel cylinder cups and the 2 pistons. Install the 2 wheel cylinder cups to each piston. Install the compression spring and 2 pistons to the wheel cylinder. Install the 2 new cylinder dust boots to the wheel cylinder. F42692 16. INSTALL LH, FRONT OR UPPER REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY (a) Install the wheel cylinder with the 2 bolts. Torque: 10 N m (102 kgf cm, 7 ft lbf) Using, connect the brake tube. 0902300100 Torque: 15.2 N m (155 kgf cm, 11 ft lbf) 17. APPLICATION HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE (a) Apply the high temperature grease to the shoe attached surface of backing plate. F42693 F42893 18. INSTALL REAR BRAKE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUBASSY (a) Using a pliers, install the parking brake shoe lever with a new Cwasher. F42694 1917

Connect the upper side return spring to the rear brake shoe. F42688 Using, install the rear brake shoe, pin, shoe hold down spring and cup. 0971800010 F42687 20. INSTALL REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER LH 21. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET LH (a) Apply the high temperature grease to the adjusting bolt. Install the parking brake shoe strut set LH. 22. INSTALL FRONT BRAKE SHOE (a) Install the upper side return spring to the front brake shoe. F42695 Using, install the front brake shoe, pin, shoe hold down spring and cup. 0971800010 F42686 1918

Expand Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster and expand the shoe until the drum locks. F42696 Contract Using a screwdriver, back off the adjuster 8 notches. Install the hole plug. F42683 26.
