Important information for the installation of the basic kit Only for use within the BMW dealer organisation. The basic kit may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the required special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.). Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car. Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties. If the specified pins or chambers are occupied, bridges, double crimps or parallel terminal leads are to be used. Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the appropriate figure. The interior trim parts supplied in the trim colour black are also available in other trim colours and can be ordered using the electronic parts catalogue (EPC). The enclosed switch module is not to be installed in cars with BMW navigation system II. Installation and wiring diagram A1 A2 A A3 Punkt 1 A7 A5 A4 A6 F 38 0216 B The basic wiring harness A is to be installed along the audio and main wiring harness as shown in the figure and secured using textile adhesive tape and cable ties. Start the installation of the basic wiring harness A at point 1 (next to the handbrake lever) with branches A1 and A2. Branch A1 to the footwell on the right. Branch A2 to the centre console. Branch A3 to the installation location of the microphone in the headlining at the front centre. Branch A4 to the A pillar on the left to the installation location of the switch module. Branch A5 to the installation location of the compensator in the luggage compartment on the left or to the connector for the telephone aerial in the luggage compartment on the left. Branch A6 to the installation location of the compensator in the luggage compartment on the left. Branch A7 to the left tail light. Tie back any excess lengths. EN/33

6. To prepare the installation location for the microphone in cars without a sunroof 21 22 E38 Take the required template out of the retrofit kit and cut it out. Then place the required template on the rear external contour of the interior light () and affix it to the headlining (21). Cut out the required opening (22) with a sharp knife.! When you cut out the section, ensure that you do not damage any cables/lines. Remove the template again. 8 7 6 F 38 0217 B 21 31 F 38 0218 B Push the sub-frame for the hands-free facility (8) through the opening () into the headlining (21). Place the hands-free facility frame (7) into the opening () and clip the hands-free facility subframe (8) to the hands-free facility frame (7). Secure the microphone trim (6) in the hands-free facility frame (7). EN/34

7. To prepare the installation location for the microphone in cars with a sunroof 9 10 Take the existing front headlining trim off the headlining and remove the glass sunroof switch (). The existing front headlining trim is no longer required and is to be replaced by a new front headlining trim (9). Secure the microphone trim (10) and the glass sunroof switch () in the new front headlining trim (9). Then fit the new front headlining trim (9) back into the headlining. F 38 0219 B EN/35

8. To install the basic wiring harness Carefully cut out the opening () in the carpet (23) between the wiring harness (21) and the air duct (22).! Ensure that you do not damage any cables/lines. 22 21 23 F 38 02 B A1+A2 Pull up the carpet () and lay branches A1 and A2 on the basic wiring harness A through the opening in the carpet () into the centre console. F 38 0221 B A1 A2 Push branches A1 and A2 on the basic wiring harness A under the air duct (). Lay branch A1 under the centre console forwards into the right-hand footwell. F 38 0222 B EN/36

8. To install the basic wiring harness A 21 Pull up the carpet () again and lay the basic wiring harness A in the cable duct (21) towards the rear. Secure the basic wiring harness A with textile adhesive tape (22) as shown in the figure. 22 F 38 0223 B 11 The figure shows the rear bulkhead to the luggage compartment. Expose the opening () and place the edge protector (11) on to the metal edge of the opening (). Cut off the excess length of the edge protector (11). F 38 0224 B 14 A5-A7 A A3+A4 Place both cable holders (14) on to the existing stud bolt. Lay branches A5 to A7 on the basic wiring harness A through the opening () in the rear bulkhead into the luggage compartment. Lay branches A3 and A4 on the basic wiring harness A along the left door sill under the carpet to the installation location of the switch module in the left A pillar. Insert the basic wiring harness A into the cable holder (14) and close the cable holder (14). F 38 0225 B EN/37

8. To install the basic wiring harness 12 16 17 Connect the cable cover from the rear floor pan (12) and the cable cover from the rear left floor pan (13) to the basic wiring harness A as shown in the figure. Secure the cable covers (12 + 13) with pressstuds (16) and plastic nuts (17). 13 16 F 38 0226 B 15 The figure shows the luggage compartment at the rear left. 18 21 22 19 A5-A7 Lay branches A5 to A7 on the basic wiring harness A into the luggage compartment. Insert two cable clips (15) into the securing holes () for them. Screw the wiring harness holder (18) to the securing bolt (21). Insert the cable holder (19) behind the retaining clip (22). F 38 0227 B Lay and secure the basic wiring harness A as shown in the figure. Insert the cable tie (3) into the cable tie holder and secure the basic wiring harness A. 3 F 38 0228 B EN/38

8. To install the basic wiring harness 4 A6 A5 Lay branch A5, coaxial socket casing FME, and branch A6, black 3-pin socket casing, to the installation location of the compensator / telephone aerial and connect them. Screw the FME connector (4) to branch A5 and connect to the telephone aerial (bumper aerial). X400 F 38 0229 B A7 X400 A7 Lay branch A7, white 12-pin socket casing on the basic wiring harness A to the white 12-pin SA plug X400 near the left tail light and then connect them. X400 F 38 0230 B 2 X10018 The figure shows the fuse holder () in the luggage compartment on the right. Insert a 5 A fuse (2) into the fuse holder X10018 in free slot F. F 38 0231 B EN/39

8. To install the basic wiring harness A4 A A3 Lay branches A3 and A4 on the basic wiring harness A to the installation location of the switch module on the left A pillar. The connection of branch A4 is described in the section entitled To install the switch module. Branch A4 is not required on cars with a fitted BMW navigation system II and is to be tied back. F 38 0232 B A3 Thread branch A3, black 3-pin socket casing on the basic wiring harness A near the A pillar on the left from below through the instrument panel and along the left A pillar upwards to the headlining and secure it with textile adhesive tape. A When laying branch A3 to the installation location of the microphone, ensure that it is inserted cleanly into the cable duct in the left A pillar so that it does not adversely affect the function of the head airbag. IIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII F 38 0233 B! Refer to the instructions for the head airbag. EN/40

9. To install the switch module for cars before modification date 9/98 without navigation system II (additional monitor) The installation instructions supplied with the switch module are not applicable. B1 B2 B B4 B3 B7 B6 B5 F 38 0251 B B3 A4 A B2 B1 B B7 Connect branch B1, 1-pin socket contact, red/white cable, to the socket casing (), PIN 1. Connect branch B2, 1-pin socket contact, white/brown cable, to the socket casing (), PIN 2. Connect branch B3, black 2-pin plug casing on the switch module, to branch A4, black 2-pin socket casing on the basic wiring harness A. Screw branch B7, cable eyelet with a diameter of 6 mm, brown cable on the switch module, to the earth post X1108 in the footwell on the driver s side. F 38 0234 B 21 Remove the front left door disconnection plug () and release and disconnect the black 8-pin plug casing (21). F 38 0235 B B5 Lay branches B5 and B6 through the opening in the A pillar to the door disconnection plug (). Connect branch B5, black 8-pin plug casing on the switch module B to the door disconnection plug (). B6 F 38 0236 B EN/41

9. To install the switch module for cars before modification date 9/98 without navigation system II (additional monitor) B6 Connect branch B6, black 8-pin socket casing on the switch module B, to the black 8-pin plug casing () on the audio wiring harness that you previously released and secure it with textile adhesive tape. Secure the plug connection (B6 + ) in the A pillar with cable ties and install the door disconnection plug. Then secure the switch module to the door wiring harness using cable ties. F 38 0237 B Do not assemble the car again until the required hand-free facility retrofit kit has been installed (see separate installation instructions). EN/42

10. To install the switch module for cars after modification date 9/98 without navigation system II (additional monitor) The installation instructions supplied with the switch module are not applicable. B3 B2 B11 B B4 B5 B6 B1 B7 B10 B12 B9 B8 F 38 0238 B B1 A4 B2 B3 B Connect branch B1, black 2-pin plug casing on the switch module B, to branch A4, black 2-pin socket casing on the basic wiring harness A. Connect branch B2, 1-pin socket contact, red/white cable, to the socket casing (), PIN 1. Connect branch B3, 1-pin socket contact, white/brown cable, to the socket casing (), PIN 2. A F 38 0239 B 24 23 21 22 Remove the front left door disconnection plug () and release and disconnect the black 8-pin plug casing (21). DCarefully push back the shrink hose (22) if necessary. F 38 0240 B Disconnect the existing 1-pin plug contact (23), black/white cable, from slot PIN 18 on the black 8-pin plug casing (21). Connect the disconnected 1-pin plug contact (23), black/white cable, to the supplied Bordeaux 3-pin plug casing (24) in slot PIN 1. EN/43

10. To install the switch module for cars after modification date 9/98 without navigation system II (additional monitor) 22 21 Disconnect the existing 1-pin plug contact (), black/brown cable, from slot PIN 30 on the black 8-pin plug casing (21). Connect the disconnected 1-pin plug contact (), black/brown cable, to the supplied Bordeaux 3-pin plug casing (22) in slot PIN 2. Then push the Bordeaux 3-pin plug casing (22) into the A pillar and lay it to the installation location of the switch module B. F 38 0241 B X1108 B5-B8 B9 B Lay branches B5 - B6 to the opening in the door disconnection plug in the A pillar. Connect branch B9, Bordeaux 3-pin socket casing on the switch module B, to the installed Bordeaux 3-pin plug casing (). Screw branch B10, cable eyelet with a diameter of 6 mm, brown cable on the switch module B, to the earth post X1108 in the footwell on the driver s side. B10 F 38 0242 B B7 B8 22 21 Disconnect the plug contact (), yellow/red cable, from PIN 28 on the black 8-pin plug casing (21). Connect branch B7, 1-pin plug contact, yellow/red cable on the switch module B, to the black 8-pin plug casing (21) in PIN 28. Disconnect the plug contact (22), yellow/brown cable, from PIN 29 on the black 8-pin plug casing (21). Connect branch B8, 1-pin plug contact, yellow/brown cable on the switch module B, to the black 8-pin plug casing (21) in PIN 29. F 38 0243 B The supplied shrink hoses () must be pushed on to branches B5, 1-pin socket contact, yellow/red cable, and B6, 1-pin socket contact, yellow/brown cable, on the switch module. 10. To install the switch module for cars after modification date 9/98 without navigation system II (additional monitor) 21 24 22 B6 B5 23 F 38 0245 B Connect the disconnected 1-pin plug contact (), yellow/red cable on the black 8-pin plug casing (21), to branch B5, 1-pin socket contact, yellow/red cable on the switch module B. Connect the disconnected 1-pin plug contact (22), yellow/brown cable on the black 8-pin plug casing (21), to branch B6, 1-pin socket contact, yellow/brown cable on the switch module B. Push both shrink hoses (23) over the connected contact parts (branch B5 + and branch B6 + 22) on the speaker cable and shrink them towards with a hot air blower. Connect the plug casing (21) back into the plug casing (24) of the door disconnection plug. Then secure the switch module on the door wiring harness with cable ties. Do not assemble the car again until the required hand-free facility retrofit kit has been installed (see separate installation instructions). EN/45
