Applications The Stocktrol - H Vibrating Level Switch detects the absence or presence of dry bulk solids in bins, silos and hoppers. It can be mounted to give high or low level alarms. The following list highlights some of the materials that the Stocktrol - H has been successful in monitoring. animal feed coffee beans gravel sawdust beans coffee, ground milk powder soda candies dehydrated mud peanuts spices carbon black fine ground glass polystyrene powder styrofoam pellets cellulose powder flour polystyrene chips sugar cement freeze-dried coffee potato chips tea leaves chalk grains puffed cereals tobacco cereals frozen french fries salt wood shavings clay powder granular plastics sand Operation General The Stocktrol - H is a vibrating level switch that provides a contact output indicating a high or low level in a bin. The signal from the electronic circuit excites a crystal in the probe, causing the blade to vibrate. When material contacts the blade of the probe, the vibration stops. This is sensed by the electronic circuitry which forces the relay to change state after a one second time delay. When the blade is freed, the vibration will resume after a few seconds of time delay and the relay will revert to its normal operating status. The shape of the blade and its vibrating action make it self- cleaning. Relay status LED 1 is illuminated when the relay is energized Sensitivity There are two sensitivity settings that can be selected by the J6 jumper on the circuit board. The A position is normally used first when setting up the Stocktrol-H. If the Stocktrol-H fails to give an alarm, set the jumper to B. The B position is used typically on sticky or relatively dense materials. PL-301 4 98/04/05
Failsafe / Relay The Stocktrol - H operates in either failsafe high (FSH) or failsafe low (FSL). The failsafe mode is selected by the J1 jumper on the circuit board: FSH - for high level alarm, the relay is de-energized ( LED off ) when the blade is in contact with material or power has failed. FSL - for low level alarm, the relay is de-energized ( LED off ) when the blade is free or power has failed. Failsafe operation is achieved by using the normally open contact of the relay in the annunciator or control circuit. The probe must be kept out of the path of falling material so as not to be damaged. If this is not possible, a shield must be constructed over the probe as shown. A shield must also be used when the Stocktrol - H is used for low level indication. gasket mounting flange angle iron bin wall PL-301 5
The extended version is designed for top mounting, whereby the probe is suspended vertically such that the blade will reach into the material at its maximum level. In cases where the extended probe is installed horizontally and a shield is required, it should be extended and adequately supported, over the length of the probe. THE MAXIMUM VERTICAL FORCE ON THE BLADE IS 20 N m (15 FT LB). When the probe is inserted horizontally, it must be turned until the blade is vertically oriented. This reduces the chance of material resting on the blade, causing false alarms. Alignment of the blade is verified by the two slots in the mounting gland nut. These will be facing up and down when the blade is vertically oriented. When screwing the Stocktrol - H into the bin, use a wrench on the mounting gland nut. CONDUIT ENTRY SHOULD BE FROM THE BOTTOM TO AVOID ACCUMULATION OF CONDENSATE IN THE ENCLO- SURE. DO NOT SCREW BY TURNING THE HOUSING. slot mounting gland nut PLAN VIEW - horizontal installation note : slot signifies orientation of blade tank wall SIDE VIEW - horizontal installation PL-301 6
LAYOUT AND CONNECTION All wiring must be done in conjunction with approved conduit, boxes and fittings and to procedures in accordance with all governing regulations. Field wiring must be on terminal block side only to maintain intrinsic safety. relay shown in de-energized condition relay status LED alarm jumper power connection relay connection (dry contacts) sensitivity jumper connection to probe component view side view terminal block view Notes : COM. = common or ground N.C. = normally closed N.O. = normally opened PL-301 7 98/04/05
