Summary: Skilled manual work in the operation of public works vehicles and equipment and in performing construction and maintenance activities; all other related work as required. Qualifications and Experience: Education: High school education or G.E.D. or equivalent One to two years of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience and Knowledge: Working knowledge of public works equipment operation and mechanics. Experience with welding preferred. Working knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures. Experience in the operation and maintenance of public works vehicles and equipment and in performing construction and maintenance activities to Town roads and sidewalks. Ability to perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment as well as small engine repair and maintenance. Experience in horticulture and arbor-culture and in performing landscape construction and maintenance activities Background in horticulture, pest control, landscape construction/maintenance and/or arbor-culture preferred. Certifications and Licenses: Applicant must possess a Class B CDL license and a 2B Hoisting License. Failure to maintain both full licenses may be cause for termination. Duties/Responsibilities: This is not intended to be an exhaustive list and other duties may be assigned. The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Essential Functions: Maintenance and repair including building, repairing, and patching streets, highways and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins and drainage lines, installing and repairing guard rails, fencing and signs, trimming brush, and painting lines on roads and parking lots. (See Addendum A attached.) Ability to operate chainsaws, perform small engine repair and maintenance. (See Addendum A attached.) Operate vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control work, plows sidewalks, plows municipal parking lots and school yards; operates street sweeper; performs emergency highway repairs and other public works related emergency repairs as required. Operate trucks and other equipment of moderate complexity for all public works projects; hauls gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials; loads and unloads materials; performs manual labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment Remove branches, limbs and other debris from roadways; tree trimming May perform duties of similar nature consistent with public works tasks and assignments as directed by superiors. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions. Must be able to take and comprehend verbal and written instructions appropriate to DPW activities. Must successfully pass an employee physical prior to beginning work for the Town and be subject to random DOT drug testing. Supervision: Works under direct supervision of department foreman or Assistant Director of Public Works; some assignments may be conducted under general supervision; verbal and written instructions provided by supervisor as necessary. Performs routine duties that may occasionally be carried out independently but are subject to check during progress and upon completion for satisfactory performance. Job Environment: Applicant works under field conditions with unavoidable exposure to bad weather and a variety of hazardous conditions such as dust, heat, fumes, dangerous road conditions, etc. Public Works Laborer Board of Selectmen 2 October 2017

Applicant must use and wear personal protective equipment and clothing such as hearing protection, eye protection, foot and hand protection, respiratory protection. Applicant will operate public works equipment such as trucks in excess of 26,001 pounds, light vehicles such as pickup trucks, one ton dump trucks or vans. Applicant will use power tools and hand tools, such as jack hammers, and other pneumatic tools. Other equipment to include but not limited to: chippers, chain saws, lawn mowers, portable electric tools, etc. Errors could result in property damage, personal injury, danger to public safety and cause monetary loss to the town. Physical Requirements: Frequent strenuous physical effort required ability to lift and carry on a frequent and continuous basis, weights of 50 to 100 pounds. Required to bend, kneel, reach and squat frequently throughout a work shift. The job will require frequent movement in and out of equipment and vehicles. Maybe required to work shifts greater than 8 hours especially during snow and ice control operations. PUBLIC WORKS AND WATER DEPARTMENTS Union Contract ADDENDUM A Light Duty Maintenance Light duty maintenance shall include but not be limited to the following: 1. Report needed oil changes as required or at a frequency recommended for each vehicle to the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent. When vehicle is scheduled for its necessary oil change, report any other possible mechanical problems to the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent so that he will be able to determine the best way to resolve them in the most time efficient manner possible. 2. Report any Town vehicle mechanical problems as soon as possible to the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent so that he may determine the best way to resolve them. 3. Maintain the cleanliness of the interior cab and exterior body of the Town vehicle, especially when the vehicle is being serviced prior to being inspected for its Massachusetts Inspection sticker. 4. Change light bulbs, wiper blades and perform other minor repairs not requiring a mechanic. 5. If requested, help perform additional repairs while the vehicle is in the Vehicle Maintenance Garage and the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent and/or Fabricator and Air Brake Mechanic are on duty. 6. Supply copies of repair work orders to the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent on work performed on Town Vehicles outside the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent s maintenance garage. The parties agree that the implementation of light maintenance is necessary to preserve the life of town vehicles. Respective department heads will ensure that the employees comply with the above in regard to the equipment assigned to their department. The Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent will provide forms necessary for logs and records and other documentation, designate a place for the records to be maintained and provide for proper instruction to the employees in their respective departments as to how they are to perform light duty maintenance, maintain the logs and records. The final authority to determine what maintenance is to be performed, how it is to be performed and what records will be maintained will rest with the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent and the Fabricator and Air Brake Mechanic. Department heads agree that as their employees have time available or when it will expedite returning urgently needed equipment to the fleet that they will make their employees available to assist the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent or the Fabricator and Air Brake Mechanic when they are on duty, in the performance of complicated repairs or instances where assistance of additional men will quicken the repair time and reduce the down time of the equipment.
