R a i l S y s t e m s Rail is the basis of all mobile systems. Mobile carriages and stationary platforms typically are supported by this component. Various types of rail are available for every type of mobile system available from Spacesaver. The Modular Mobile system offers two rail types, Floorless and Levelable. FLOORLESS RAIL Extruded aluminum alloy that provides a lightweight, non-grouted rail alternative where room height is an issue. Designed to sit on top of existing floor covering. Anchored into the floor. Center flange rail is non-levelable. No in-rail anti-tip features. SIDE VIEW Roll Pin Hole TOP VIEW 1/2 Height of ½" (13 mm) from the base of the rail to the top. 3-1/4 3-¼" (83 mm) base flange. ORDER FLOORLESS RAIL Anchoring Hole Anchoring Hole A rail run will consist of 84 (2128 mm) sections with the final section a minimum of 18 (456 mm). If the final section is less than 18 (456 mm), reduce one 84 (2128 mm) section (in 6 (152 mm) increments) where the final section is a minimum of 18 (456 mm). The overall length of one rail section within a system is calculated as follows: 1) Add up the widths of all mobile carriages. (Stationary platforms do not require rail). 2) Add 1.16" (29 mm) for each mobile carriage in the system. 3) Add required aisle width (ADA requires a 36" (912 mm) minimum). Example Calculation: 4 Carriages x 24" wide 96.00" Carriage growth = 1.16"/ carriage 4 Carriages x carriage growth 4.64" 1 36" aisle 36.00" Total rail length 136.64" Order one 7' and one 5' 144.00" Floorless Rail Rail Anchors Roll Pin In addition, a rail splice is required where one rail section joins another together. The splice is accomplished by placing a roll pin into each side of the first rail, then join the second rail to the first. Each splice also requires additional anchoring. The roll pins are included in the rail assembly. The anchors are provided by the Area Contractor/Installer. At a minimum, they should be 3/16 (5 mm) Kwik Con type anchor with 1-1/4 (32 mm) embedment. Note: Maintain a minimum of 4 (102 mm) clearance between the rear rail and the back wall. 2

R a i l S y s t e m s SPACESAVER MODULAR Rail Anchor Platform Anchor Stationary Platform Bumper End Stop Bracket Rail Attachment Nuts Mounting Bracket Floorless Rail Floorless Rail When stationary platforms are used with the floorless rail, they are anchored directly to the floor, butted up to the rail ends. When stationary platforms are not used, a floorless rail end stop is attached to the anchoring bolts at the rail ends. One end stop kit is required for each rail end when stationary platforms are not used. Two kits per rail if no stationary platforms are used. LEVELABLE RAIL Extruded aluminum alloy that provides a lightweight, non-grouted, non-anchored rail alternative to permanent installations. SIDE VIEW Designed to sit on top of existing floor covering with leveling capabilities. 1-1/2 1-1/2 Center flange rail is levelable and incorporates 1-½" (38 mm) appliance levelers. Leveler L Profile Levelers 8" (203 mm) on center. Both sides of rail. Height of 1-½" (38 mm) from base to top. 2-7/8" (73 mm) base flange. 2-7/8 TOP VIEW Incorporates an in-rail anti-tip feature. Uplift capacity of 900 lbs. (1339 kg). Designed to hold the modular floor. 8 Leveling Hole 3

R a i l S y s t e m s ORDER LEVELABLE RAIL A rail run will consist of 84 (2128 mm) sections with the final section a minimum of 18 (456 mm). If the final section is less than 18 (456 mm), reduce one 84 (2128 mm) section (in 6 (152 mm) increments) where the final section is a minimum of 18 (456 mm). Two or more rail sections require a splice plate at each joint. Splice plate constructed of 11-gauge steel. Splice plate included in the rail assembly. Splice plates are required at the both ends of the rail. Leveler Openings Leveler (Four leveler openings.) Splice Plate Attachment Screw (Eight openings for screws to attach the splice plate to the underside of the rail.) Stationary platforms are required where levelable rail is used and the rail must extend under platforms. Note: Maintain a minimum of 4 (102 mm) clearance between the center of the rear rail and the back wall. 5 Rail The overall length of one rail section within a system is calculated as follows: 1. Add up the widths of all mobile carriages and stationary platforms. Stationary Platform Section Stationary Adder Platform 4 Rail 3 Rail 2. Add 1.16" (29 mm) for each mobile carriage and stationary platform in the system. 3. Add required aisle width (ADA requires a 36" (912 mm) minimum). Stationary Starter Platform 2 Rail 1 Rail The number of rails required for a system is dependent on the length, or depth of the system. A rail is required under each wheel housing of the mobile carriage and stationary platform section. Number of rails are the same as the number of uprights within the section. Ramp Example: If a system has four shelving sections, the required number of rails will be five. 4

M o d u l a r F l o o r SPACESAVER MODULAR Whenever levelable rail is installed on top of an existing floor, a raised floor is required between the rails to compensate for rail height. This allows for easy access and eliminates the tripping hazard of the rail. The Modular Mobile system offers two floor types, Vinyl coated or Uncoated. MODULAR FLOOR The Modular floor is levelable. Option 1: constructed of ¾" (19 mm) oriented strand board (OSB) with vinyl coated surface. (Gray or tan.) Option 2: constructed of ¾" (19 mm) 7-ply exterior grade plywood where no top surface is required. Optional fire retardant plywood is available, contact Spacesaver. Floor sections are grooved (routed) in two places on the underside of the floor. This allows the section to rest on the rail and is the basis for leveling. Levelers allow up to 1-1/2" (38 mm) of levelability. Groove cut (routed) on each end of the sections allow the floor sections to be spliced together. Splice plates are 6" (152 mm) x ¾" (19 mm). Splice plates constructed of 11-gauge galvanized steel. The floor panels are available in 24 (608 mm), 30 (760 mm), 36 (912 mm), 42 (1064 mm) and 48" (1216 mm) widths. All floor panels must extend under the stationary platforms. A quick check to make sure the width is correct, the width of one continuous run of floor should be equal to one continuous run of rail. SIDE VIEW Splice Plate Opening T Nut END VIEW Rail Groove Splice Plates Floor Example: If the system requires rail lengths of 7' (2128 mm) and 5' (1520 mm), for a total run of 12' (3648 mm), then one run of floor should require three 48" (1216 mm) panels, for a total run of 12' (3648 mm). The available depths of the floor panels are 30" (760 mm), 36" (912 mm) and 42" (1064 mm). The depth of the floor panels must match the nominal shelving widths. FLOOR END COVER The end covers are used to cover the unfinished floor panel edges and the rail ends. They are attached to the top surface of the floor panel with wood screws. It gives the modular floor a "finished" look at both ends of the system. End covers are included in the mobile carriage or stationary platform assemblies. They are available in 30 (760 mm), 36 (912 mm) and 42 (1064 mm) sections. (Floor end covers are not shown.) 5

R a m p s The ramp allows a smooth transition from the existing floor to the top of the raised floor provided with the mobile system. RAMP Aluminum-extruded alloy with a pivot extension. Height of 7/8" (22 mm). TOP VIEW Depth of 4 ½" (114 mm). ORDER RAMP A rail run will consist of 84 (2128 mm) sections with the final section a minimum of 18 (456 mm). SIDE VIEW Grooved Surfaces If the final section is less than 18 (456 mm), reduce one 84 (2128 mm) section (in 6 (152 mm) increments) where the final section is a minimum of 18 (456 mm). Required for access aisle only. Single access systems will have a ramp on one side. Dual access systems will have a ramp on two sides. Pivot Extension Ramp Splice Opening Splice is required when the total ramp length exceeds 84 (2128 mm). Ramp is joined together with two roll pins, similar to the Floorless rail splice. Levelable Rail Ramp Roll Pins Ramp End Treatment Note: This ramp does not comply to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) standard. An optional ramp that meets the ADA standard is available. Contact Spacesaver for more information. 6

C a r r i a g e / P l a t f o r m s The mobile carriages and stationary platforms are the workhorse components of any mobile system. These components accept the storage equipment that will hold the material to be stored. MOBILE CARRIAGE AND STATIONARY PLATFORM SECTIONS Each carriage section is engineered for durability STARTER CARRIAGE SECTION and designed for modularity. Constructed of 14-gauge steel. 700 lbs. (1050kg) per lineal carriage foot (304 mm) carriage capacity. Height of 3-7/8" (99 mm) (see note below). Wheel housing carries the weight of the storage equipment and media. Each carriage section contains the wheels and drive mechanism for the carriages. Stationary platforms contain, in place of the End Cover wheels, a galvanized bracket that is used to attach the platform to the rail. Stationary platforms are required on both ends of the system module when using the levelable rail. Cross bracing provides positive alignment while the side covers keep the carriages and platforms square. End covers constructed of 18-gauge steel. Side Cover The mobile carriages and stationary platforms consist of "Starters" and "Adders". A starter unit will be shipped completely assembled and ready to place on the rail. Adders, on the other hand, require some assembly. The adder contains a wheel housing, cross bracing, side covers. C a r r i a g e / P l a t f o r m s IN RAIL ANTI-TIP The in-rail anti-tip device is attached to the carriage or platform. It serves multiple purposes. Provides a security feature that "locks" the side and end covers in place so they cannot be removed while the anti-tip is attached. Provides the vehicle that secures the shelving uprights to the carriage or platform. Ties the system into the rail. The translucent bumper provides protection of the carriage when they are moved as well as gives the "finished" look to the carriage or platform. MODES OF OPERATION Bumper Anti-Tip The Modular Mobile carriages are available in two modes of operation, manual and mechanical assist. The Manual System Requires the use of a manual handle and maximum human effort. A manual system cannot exceed 9' (2736 mm) in length or six mobile carriage in a module. The Mechanical Assist System Requires the use of a 3 spoke mechanical assist handle, which is located on the face of the end panel. Standard drive/gear ratios for the line shaft carriage is 1 to 4,000. Cannot exceed 15' (4560 mm) in length or six mobile carriage in a module. Manual Handle 3 Spoke Handle Chain Tensioner 8

C a r r i a g e / P l a t f o r m s SPACESAVER MODULAR Mobile Carriage Sections: Length Width 30" (760 mm) 24" (608 mm) 36" (912 mm) 30" (760 mm) 42" (1064 mm) Stationary Platform Sections: Length Width 30" (760 mm) 12 (304 mm) 36" (912 mm) 15 (380 mm) 42" (1064 mm) 24" (608 mm) 30" (760 mm) The carriage and platforms are designed to mobilize 4-Post shelving, Case-Type shelving and stackboxes. Cantilever shelving cannot be used on the Modular Mobile system. 4-Post and Case-Type shelving, when used with the Modular Mobile system, are 53 (1343 mm), 64" (1621 mm) and 76" (1925 mm). Widths and depths are the same as indicated above for mobile carriages and stationary platforms. Any size deviation must be approved by Spacesaver. The shelving can be obtained through Spacesaver or existing shelving may be used. When existing shelving is used, the exact dimension must be provided to Spacesaver with the quote. These dimensions are required to allow Spacesaver the ability to manufacture the proper end panel treatment. Single faced and double faced, back-to-back and through shelving is acceptable on the Modular Mobile system. Stackboxes, when used with the Modular Mobile system, are available in: One standard height 73" (1849 mm) The three standard widths available are 30" (760 mm), 36" (912 mm) and 42" (1064 mm) One standard depth, 12" (304 mm) letter size. Spacesaver recommends the VuMax V1 Series (1-800-628-1945). Wrappers and dividers are constructed of 18- gauge steel while the shelves are constructed of 20-gauge steel. The units are welded and finished with powder coat paint. The stackboxes can be ordered directly from VuMax or the supplier of your choice. However, if another supplier is used, the exact dimension must be provided to Spacesaver with the quote. These dimensions are required to allow Spacesaver the ability to manufacture the proper end panel treatment. 9

E n d P a n e l s End panels serve multiple functions. Panels provided for the end of a mobile system allow the mobile carriage controls to be attached to the panel at a convenient height for the operators while creating an aesthetically pleasing appearance to the front of the system. F l o o r L o a d C o n s i d e r a t i o n When storage equipment is compacted, heavier floor loads are created. The loaded weight of storage equipment (floor loading) is an important consideration. When planning Spacesaver Modular Mobile Systems for abovegrade installation we strongly recommend that the mobile system s load transfer to the structural floor system be analyzed by an independent structural engineer (P.E.) registered to practice in the location of the Spacesaver mobile system installation. FLOOR LOADING To aid floor load planning, the example below provides a visual illustration of one method to calculate floor loads. The terminology and calculation are defined as follows: Media Weight Calculation: Letter size files uses 2.50#/inch Legal size files uses 2.92#/inch Filing inches are 2" less than shelving width Examples: 30" wide shelving - 28" LFI 36" wide shelving - 34" LFI 42" wide shelving - 40" LFI SAMPLE CALCULATION: SINGLE ACCESS SYSTEM 36 WIDE SHELVING - 5 OPENINGS 12 DEEP BACK-TO-BACK LEVELABLE RAIL WITH MODULAR FLOOR Number of openings per section Number of sections per system Storage Equipment Weight: Spacesaver equipment includes mobile and storage housing Weights derived from SSPrice software Other Storage Equipment is non- Spacesaver equipment Misc.
