AUTO TRIM II SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Auto Trim II System Description The Auto Trim System consists of the following mjor components: Auto Trim Pump - sme pump tht is used on the stndrd Power Trim models. Control Module - solid-stte electronic device tht senses engine RPM nd regultes the time t which the drive unit trims IN nd OUT when Operting in the AUTO mode. Module is protected by 20-mp fuse. Mode Switch - llows the opertor to select either AUTO or MANUAL trim opertion from the dsh. Mnul Trim Control - will only function with mode switch in the MANUAL mode nd ignition switch in the RUN position. Allows the opertor to rise nd lower the drive unit for trilering, beching, lunching nd shllow wter opertion. Also, llows the opertor to mnully djust the drive unit trim ngle while underwy in situtions where utomtic trimming is not desired (rough ses, etc.). Trim Limit Switch - Estblishes the mximum trim OUT limit in both the MANUAL nd AUTO mode. Prevents drive unit from moving out of the gimbl ring support flnges, which could cuse possible dmge to sterndrive if it were to occur t higher engine speeds. Auto Trim II Opertion The Auto Trim system is designed to llow either utomtic or mnul trimming of the bot while underwy - in ddition to llowing drive unit to be rised for trilering, beching, lunching or shllow wter opertion. A 2-position switch on dshbord llows the opertor to select the mode desired. 22217 Pge 5D-2 90-17431--4 MARCH 1998

SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Auto Mode Opertion AUTO TRIM II WARNING Drive unit will utomticlly lower from the rised position when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position nd mode switch is plced in the AUTO mode. BE SURE THAT NO ONE IS IN THE AREA OF THE DRIVE UNIT. With mode switch in the AUTO mode, the drive unit will move utomticlly to properly trim bot while underwy. This llows bot opertor to keep both hnds on the steering wheel nd to direct opertor s full ttention to drive the bot. At engine speeds below 3100 RPM, the drive unit will remin in the full IN position. This will force the bow of the bot down nd help it get up on plne quickly. Once engine reches 3100 RPM nd fter 5-6 second dely (to ensure tht bot is up on plne), the drive unit will utomticlly trim OUT to preset position for mximum bot speed nd efficiency. Trim OUT position cn be djusted to fine tune the trim ngle for ech individul bot. Upon decelertion, the drive unit will trim IN when engine reches 2600 RPM. Most bots will still be up on plne t this point. After drive reches full IN position, the trim pump motor will continue to run for pproximtely 5 seconds. NOTE: The AUTO mode lso cn be used to lower the drive unit from the fully rised (trilering) position. By plcing ignition switch in RUN position nd mode switch in AUTO mode, the drive unit will utomticlly lower to the full IN position. Be sure tht no one is in the re of the drive unit. 3 to 5 Bot Running Above Plning Speed Bot Running Below Plning Speed 90-17431--4 MARCH 1998 Pge 5D-3

AUTO TRIM II SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Mnul Mode Opertion Plcing the mode switch in the MANUAL position will dectivte the AUTO system nd llow the opertor to djust drive unit position, using the mnul trim control. Typicl controls re shown following. Mnul trimming my be desirble to fine tune the trim ngle for prticulr wter condition or bot lod, or in situtions where greter control over the trim opertion is needed. Mnul trim control lso must be used to rise the drive unit for trilering, beching, lunching nd shllow wter opertion. Ignition switch must be in the RUN position for mnul trim control to function. 1. RAISING DRIVE UNIT TO TRAILER POSITION - Press until drive unit reches desired height or end of upwrd trvel. Quicksilver Commnder 3000 Series Control - Triler Button NOTE: Some Power Trim pump motors re protected from overheting by n internl circuit breker. If trilering switch(es) re held depressed fter drive unit reches end of upwrd trvel, internl circuit breker will open nd pump will stop. If this should hppen, relese switch(es) nd llow motor to cool for pproximtely 2 minutes. Once motor is cool, circuit breker will reset utomticlly, nd trim opertion my be resumed. CAUTION DO NOT run engine bove idle RPM with unit rised for shllow wter opertion, s drive unit is out beyond gimbl ring support flnges nd hs no side support. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN OPERATING BOAT WITH DRIVE UNIT RAISED. Pge 5D-4 90-17431--4 MARCH 1998

SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 AUTO TRIM II 2. TRIMMING DRIVE UNIT OUT (BOW UP) - Press switch until drive unit moves to properly trim bot or trim limit switch stops outwrd trvel. Quicksilver Commnder 3000 Series Control - UP/OUT Button - Press CAUTION 22174 NEVER trim the drive unit OUT using the Triler switch(es) while bot is underwy. Severe dmge to drive unit my result if the unit is rised beyond the gimbl ring support flnges t engine speeds bove idle RPM. 3. TRIMMING DRIVE UNIT IN (BOW DOWN) - Press switch until drive unit moves to properly trim bot or until drive unit reches end of downwrd trvel. Quicksilver Commnder 3000 Series Control - IN Button - Press 70023 90-17431--4 MARCH 1998 Pge 5D-5

AUTO TRIM II SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Electricl System Overlod Protection The Auto Trim electricl system is protected from overlod by 110-mp fuse, nd 20-mp in-line fuse t control module positive (+) bttery led nd 20-mp in-line fuse t ignition switch (if Quicksilver ignition switch is used). If bot is equipped with 3-Button Control Pnel, 20-mp in-line fuse lso is locted t pnel. If Auto Trim electricl system becomes inopertive, check for blown fuse. If fuse hs blown, the cuse for overlod MUST BE found nd corrected BEFORE replcing fuse. Auto Trim Limit Adjustment In most cses, best ll-round performnce is obtined with drive unit djusted so tht front of hull will be slightly out of wter when bot is on plne. 3 to 5 Bot Properly Trimmed Adjusting the drive unit OUT from this position will tend to rise the bow of the bot, thus further reducing the wetted surfce of the hull nd, in some cses, incresing bot speed. However, if trimmed out excessively, bouncing, porpoising, propeller ventiltion nd possible difficult steering control could result. Bow Too High - Move Drive Unit IN Adjusting the drive unit IN from norml position will force the bow of the bot down, thus incresing the wetted surfce of the hull nd, in some cses, improving bot ride in rough wter (t prtil throttle). However, this will reduce bot speed. Bow Too Low - Move Drive Unit OUT Pge 5D-6 90-17431--4 MARCH 1998
