Q. Is DARPA going to provide insurance? A. DARPA plans to provide insurance under specific circumstances. There are three separate time periods that need to be discussed:

Site Visit Teams must ensure that they comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding insurance requirements and the operation of their vehicle. During the site visit, the teams accept full legal responsibility for safe operation of their vehicle

Teams in Possession of E-stop DARPA and teams will sign a bailment agreement transferring responsibility for the E-stop to the teams upon receipt. When a team accepts the E-stop system, it accepts full liability.

NQE and the Grand Challenge A second bailment agreement is completed which transfers legal responsibility for the vehicle to DARPA during the NQE and the Grand Challenge. A DARPA staff member controls the E-stop transmitter during this time. DARPA carries limited liability insurance during the NQE and the Grand Challenge

Q. Will all vehicles start at the same time? A. Vehicles will start sequentially at fixed intervals. The start order will be announced on October 6, 2005.

Q. Does the vehicle have to pass through every waypoint in the RDDF? A. Missing a point in the RDDF may not lead to automatic disqualification, vehicles that shorten the route by omitting waypoints may be disqualified.

Q. What does the lateral boundary offset (LBO) signify? A. LBO s define the route width. Drifting outside the LBO is not necessarily grounds for disqualification. Note: The LBO will be wide enough for vehicles to bypass any obstacles on the route.

Q. Will vehicles be disqualified if they strike or damage obstacles along the route? A. Vehicles may be disqualified if the Chief Judge determines that the vehicle is not operating safely. A single obstacle touch alone may not result in disqualification.

Q. Will DARPA keep our vehicle if we win the prize? A. After a final inspection, DARPA will return the vehicle to the team. DARPA makes no claim to any of the technology or the vehicle itself.
