BACKGROUND 3 COLLISIONS INVOLVING LARGE VEHICLES IN SAN FRANCISCO: Low frequency, but high severity 4% of all collisions, but 17% of all collisions resulting in fatalities Spiked in 2013

DRIVER EDUCATION 10 DRIVER EDUCATION Effective street safety education creates a common set of expectations and changes behavior, resulting in safer, more livable streets for all. Professional drivers may lack information about driving in an urban context.
DRIVER EDUCATION LARGE VEHICLE URBAN DRIVING SAFETY VIDEO Released in July 2015 Has been viewed by over 4500 drivers Required viewing for SF city agency drivers Required viewing for SFMTA contractors who operate large vehicles Lots of interest/voluntary adoption by private fleet/trucking companies Available free + online for anyone who wishes to use it!
LARGE VEHICLE TRAINING CURRICULUM
DRIVER EDUCATION 20 DRIVER TRAINING CURRICULUM Provides a more detailed training framework than the large vehicle video Lists all relevant safety information that should be included in a training program SFMTA contractors whose drivers operate large vehicles may develop a training program based off the principles of the curriculum in lieu of having drivers view the video City staff + advocates encourage interested private parties to incorporate training curriculum into their own training programs
DRIVER EDUCATION 21 DRIVER TRAINING WORKSHOPS SFMTA contracts with local safe streets advocate groups to train city drivers, city contractors and private fleets on how to drive safely around people walking and biking Advocates also train city agency safety trainers on large vehicle safety curriculum to ensure longevity of curriculum principles in agency training programs
DRIVER EDUCATION 22 LARGE VEHICLE WORKING GROUP V2 SFMTA reconvening a large vehicle working group Dedicated space/team for addressing large vehicle policy, safety issues, etc.
SUMMARY 23 IN CONCLUSION Vehicle and fleet safety can and should play an important role in advancing Vision Zero Equipment can improve street safety by way of vehicle design; education can improve street safety by changing driver behavior Large vehicle safety is a collaborative effort!
