Hartlepool power station July 2018 monthly report Introduction Welcome to the July 2018 monthly report for Hartlepool power station. We are keen to hear the views of our local communities. We recognise that good communication is a two-way process and we welcome your feedback and comments. These reports are available to all members of the public on http://www.. Whilst we will do our best to always use plain English, talking about our business sometimes involves specific terminology and you will find a glossary of any terms used at the end of each monthly report. EDF Energy at Hartlepool power station ~ 6 th form mentoring programme The station initially joined forces with Hartlepool Sixth Form College in September 2012 followed by English Martyrs Sixth Form College in 2013 and Dyke House 6 th Form in 2014. The station s team work alongside budding young engineers interested in. potential careers here at the stations and in the broader north east economy.

The partnership, which is now working with its sixth group of students, provides everyone on the programme an EDF Energy mentor during the two years of the scheme. In July, the students attended site for a two-day development centre, taking part in various team building exercises and aptitude testing, before their next visit in September. The scheme continues to reap rewards for all involved with three students obtaining EDF Energy Graduate positions within the company and another 11 currently in receipt of EDF Energy bursaries to help support their university education. EDF Energy team strip sponsorship Every year Hartlepool power station invites applications for sporting team sponsorship and the 2018 award went to Hartlepool Football Club s under 9s. The team play in the Russell Foster Youth League against sides from all over the North East. Since starting two years ago they have won a number of leagues and tournaments. The children come from various areas of Hartlepool and are aged between seven and nine. The station would like to wish them every continued success STEM Primary Events Three local primary schools visited the centre in July to test their engineering abilities. The Year 4 children from North Ormesby Primary Academy, Middlesbrough, St John Vianneys and St Theresa Primaries, Hartlepool, all took a station tour followed by a STEM challenge.

The children were challenged to construct an electricity pylon using a range of materials while sticking to a list of rules. The children not only had a fun time, but also built some impressive pylons using basic engineering techniques. To arrange a similar event for your organisation please contact Louise Corser on 01429 853582, email hartlepoolsitetours@edf-energy.com or visit https://www./energy/education/visitor-centres for further information. Company News July 2018 South West contracts for Hinkley Point C top 1.3bn as the project remains on track New figures released by the Government show that companies in the South West have now won contracts worth more than 1.3 billion for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset. Hinkley Point C is making good progress with 3,200 workers on site in Somerset. It remains on target for its next milestone, in mid-2019, when construction rises above ground level and the first electricity is due from site in 2025. Minister for Business and Industry Richard Harrington MP said: Hinkley Point C will be pivotal in providing clean energy for the future, as well as creating high-skilled, well paid jobs right now in

the South West with companies becoming world leaders in nuclear construction and services, all part of our flagship modern Industrial Strategy. As we outlined in our recent landmark nuclear sector deal, Hinkley Point C will create over 25,000 job opportunities over the construction period, as well as employing 900 people over its 60-year lifespan. The plan sets out how the project is creating opportunities for local companies and workers, as well as helping to reinvigorate UK industry, enabling British companies to compete for nuclear contracts across the world. Nigel Cann, Hinkley Point C Delivery Director, said: South West firms have worked hard to win contracts and meet the high standards of safety, quality and efficiency required on this project. They have been real pioneers and shown ambition and determination. Their experience provides a lesson for other regions to follow. Glossary of terms: Term Environmental event or incident Outage Unit Definition Environmental events arise from wastes or discharges above permitted levels or breaches of permitted conditions. A period during which a reactor is shut down. The periodic shutdown of a reactor including for maintenance, inspection and testing or, in some cases, for refuelling is known as a planned outage. In the UK, some planned outages are known as statutory outages and are required by the conditions attached to the nuclear site licence needed to operate the station. Unscheduled shutdown of a reactor for a period is known as an unplanned outage. A unit refers to one of the reactors at the power station and its generating turbine.
