The vast product range can be seen all over the world in applications as diverse as high speed communications for the formula 1 racing teams, mobile surveillance units, high level photography, environmental testing, mobile survey equipment for cellphone operators, military communications... The larger size and weight capacity masts have become a standard for the Broadcast/ENG market and can cope with the demanding requirements of this market. The Hilomast is : adaptable to most vehicle types quick and easy to erect/retract designed and manufactured for minimum downtime, low cost maintenance and minimum while life cost All production processes are carried out in our own purpose designed manufacturing facility in Hampshire and every mast is fully tested to relevant international standards maintaining the high quality and reliability for which our products are renowned. 2
Approved to Mil Std 810E & ISO 9001 The Hilomast range of pneumatic telescopic masts is approved to the rigorous international Mil Std 810E environmental standard for operation and storage, including low pressure (high altitude) operation and is designed & manufactured in compliance with SMC s ISO 9001 Part 1 accredited quality control standards. The full Hilomast range of masts offers the extended heights from 16 to 100 feet and with trailer mounted, transportable and vehicle mounted options. The investment in Mil Std 810E by South Midlands Communications, combined with installation, design and customisation service, has allowed the company to become a major player in the international defence and security communications market. SMC s capability to design complete communications systems incorperating the Hilomast has secured major military and commercial contracts, offering the establishment of reliable, easy to use long range communications. 3
Pneumatic Telescopic Hilomasts Broadcast Range The full Hilomast range offers extended heights from 16 to 100 with carrying capacities up to 260lbs. Whilst many masts in the range can be used for Broadcast applications, 3 standard configurations are offered to meet the particular needs of the ENG vehicle market. Standard Features: The use of highly accurate drawn aluminium tube ensures optimium seal performance and minimum leakage. A full length keyway machined in each of the extending tubes prevents relative rotation between them, the key in this keyway will break before any damage is done to the tube section of the mast, in the event of an excessive torsional load. Operation over a wide temperature range -22 F to 122 F. Low pressure (14-16 p.s.i) operation, to minimise leakage and seal failure. Drain holes to eject accumulated water and minimise damage due to ice formation. Clear anodised tubes and collars or painted any colour. Magnetic switch to warn of incomplete mast retraction. Non rotating base plate and roof bearing kit. Optional Features Coloured anodising Locking collars Rotatable base plate 4
BR Series The BR Series of telescopic Hilomasts has a base section diameter of 9.375 and is pneumatically operated by custom built air compressors. These masts do not have locking collars but have special engaging screws fitted into each of the main collars to resist the torsional loads when the masts are fully extended. The BR Series of masts is for special applications where high head loads are required or where maximum directional stability is necessary. Typical Uses n Mounting video cameras fitted with telephoto lenses n Microwave antennas for Electronic News Gathering n Direction sensitive antennas or devices A computer calculation can be made for maximum deflection on specific applications. All BR masts have a horizontal flange of 6 diameter at the top for mounting antennas etc. This flange can be drilled to suit customer requirements. The tables show the vertical head load each mast will support and the maximum operational wind speed. The weight of the antenna, however, is not usually the main criterion when selecting a mast. The limiting factor is usually the side surface area of the antenna. The wind speeds shown are based on the following side surface areas: BR = 11.8 sq. ft. Although the masts will support antennas with a larger side surface area than that shown, the maximum operational wind speed will be correspondingly reduced. If in doubt, please ask for a computer check against your specific application. * Top guys not recommended. with non rotating base plate. 5
Air Supply Equipment NC3 Compressors The NC3 compressors are generally used with the NX,NY & BR Series masts, they can be used to operate smaller masts where a faster rate of extension is required. The units are supplied to meet standard conditions, but there is capacity within the system to accommodate customers specialised electrical or pneumatic control requirements. Remote controls are available as an optional extra. SPECIFICATION NC3 Max. Remote Controls This three position switch is for the remote control of NC2 and NC3 compressors. It enables the mast to be extended, retracted or held at any height. It may be hand held for DC powered compressors or mounted onto the vehicle instrument panel for both AC and DC powered units. The switch is fitted into an ABS enclosure and supplied complete with 4 metres of cable and a weatherproof plug and socket. It activates a relay and a solenoid operated air valve inside the compressor. The advantage of this system is that there is no pneumatic hose between compressor and remote control. These switches should be ordered with the compressor but can be supplied in kit form for retro-fitting to non-remote units. RC/1 This three button relay interfaced unit has been primarily designed for exterior applications and incorporates a low voltage DC convertor for controlling the NC2 and NC3 range of compressors. The control has separate commands to extend, hold or retract mast. The push buttons are fitted into die cast housing with an environmental protection rating of IP65 and supplied complete with 4 metres of cable and a weatherproof plug and socket. The controller may also be used to control a relay interface for DC driven compressors. These remote controls must be ordered with the compressor. RC/2 Rotators and Positioners SMC offer a wide range of Pan & Tilt units allowing you to accurately aim the payload from the ground and continually monitor performance. The model range can cater for all needs with headload capacity up to 500lbs. The design includes: chain & steel worm gear drive train, zero backlash - externally adjustable, ball & tapered bearings, internally adjustable limit switches, housing sealed and gasketed to withstand water and dust penetration, baked on textured enamel finish, pan rotation 435 and tilt +/-90. SMC also offer a complete line of Rotators for a wide variety of system applications. Precision designed, and smooth and quiet during operation, these Rotators are housed in water-resistant, die-cast aluminum enclosures, and therefore remain permanently lubricated for years of maintenance-free operation. 7
Nycoil & Skyreel NYCOIL Cable Conduit is the coiled hose used to house electrical wiring or antenna RF and positioner cable. - Compactly retracts when mast is nested - Easily fits around non-locking collar telescoping mast - Extends neatly with mast How to determine the length of NYCOIL needed: NYCOIL length should be two times (2X) the difference between the mast extended and nested heights. SKYREEL The Skyreel is one of the few new ENG/SNV designs ideas to come along in many years. What Does the Skyreel Do? The Skyreel replaces the standard ENG Nycoil. What is the Skyreel? The Skyreel accomodates cables in a band wound onto a reel, mounted midways on the mast What are the Skyreel advantages? Reduces Keyway Wear on the Mast Eliminates Mast Torquing Less Weight for the Mast to raise Reduces cable lengths and therfore losses Sigalarm INTRODUCTION Power lines have always been a hazard to personnel operating or working around equipment with booms or extensions that have the capability of reaching power lines. The Hilomast range of telescopic masts manufactured by SMC are typical of such equipment. While contact with overhead high-voltage lines represents only 5% of total electrical accidents, it is responsible for approximately 45% of the fatalities. Most of these accidents could have been avoided by the proper installation and use of a high-voltage proximity warning system such as SIGALARM. APPLICATIONS The SIGALARM system is at home in many working situations. Below you will find the most common applications for SIGALARM. Broadcast: vehicles for electronic news gathering and transmission monitoring Environmental: conditions monitoring vehicles or trailers Communications: survey vehicles or trailers Military: field, trailer or container mounted communication masts Aerial Photography Emergency Services: communications and lighting masts, ladders and platforms Construction: cranes and power diggers etc. Just about anything that can reach the power lines 8
