The Port at Work Part Ten in a series of photo essays on port jobs portrays the truck drivers who move freight in and out of the Port of Virginia On the morning of september 30, the Virginia Maritimer visited Century express in suffolk, VA to focus its camera on the men and women who drive trucks in and out of Virginia s marine terminals. Many truck drivers, including the ones photographed here, are owner-operators. As truck owners, most of them set up their own business venture as an incorporated LLC. some drivers own additional trucks and employ other drivers. The drivers enter into lease contracts with truck company owners such as Century express, who secure customers and freight for the owner-operator truckers to dray containers to and from the Port of Virginia. The drivers have TWIC credentials to enter the port facilities. The drivers benefit from the HrCP II (chassis pool) because with each terminal visit, they may re-use the same chassis regardless of which ocean carrier s container they are transporting. Time is money truckers appreciate VIT s efficient gate hours, chassis pools, and accurate computer systems, all of which are essential to achieve more trips within their work week. Century express, an operating affiliate of the evans group, is one of the first trucking companies in the port to participate in Virginia s green Operator ( go ) program. This Virginia Port Authority initiative allows truckers access to funds to retrofit their trucks with lower carbon dioxide exhaust-emitting mufflers and filters. The VPA was the first on the east Coast to provide a mechanism for trucking companies to have access to federal, state and regional funds to purchase and install these filters. Without these funds, environmentally friendly retrofitting would be beyond the means of trucking companies and their leased drivers. The lifeblood of the economy, trucks move the bulk of overland freight in and out of the Port of Virginia. Above: nit.
