Advantages of Taper Shape Plug against Ball Valves Comparison Between Plug Valves and Ball Valves Ball Valves Plug Valves Design Being a line contact the seating area of a Ball Valve, the sealing capability is soon damaged if the fluid is not very clean. When valve seats (soft/metal) have been damaged, the emergency sealant injection benefits is effective for a short time due to the small sealing area. GALLI&CASSINA Bubbletight Sealing Being the seat area the complete tapered surfaces of plug and body, only heavy damage can cause a reduction of valve sealing. If the valve is cycled, a new sealant injection is required. Lubricant can be injected to achieve a long term zero leakage performance. Valves can be cycled easily without any performance reduction.
Ball Valves Plug Valves High Pressure Effects Sealing is not affected by line pressure: it depends only on spring behind seats. Ball valves can t usually be opened against high differential pressure in order to preserve seats integrity. Non-metallic seating components can easily cause a sealing capabilty failure when subjected to a long burn time. Fire Safe Suitability Due to the Pressure Balanced System, the inline pressure: pushes the plug against body seat,increasing the sealing performance; keeps the plug pressure balanced, reducing the torque values. Plug valves are designed and manufactured in order to withstand the maximun differential pressure torque without any problem. Due to the absence of non-metallic seat components, to the metallic body-cover gasket and to the graphite stem gaskets, plug valves have always shown a very high resistance to fire. Once the lubricant is burnt, the plug is still in close contact with the body to guarantee a good sealing result.
Ball Valves Plug Valves Deposit of Solids Floating seats can be packed and damaged by solids. Surface finish of ball is critical and seats are protected except during operation. They cannot be-entirely maintained from the outside. Injection of sealant will not restore a long sealing period, shutdown required. Corrosion & Erosion Reliability No body cavity in contact with seating surfaces: edge of body/plug bore works as cutter cleaning the mating surfaces from every deposit of solids. No critical surfaces are directly in contact with fluid. All standard and most of the non-routine maintenance operations, including seat adjustment, can be carried out with valves under full pressure. No shutdown required.

Special Features: Coating & Overlay Hardfacing The most common damages of valves are either due to abrasion by solids in the flow lines, or the exposure of main components to corrosion attack. Galli&Cassina s researching and development in cooperation with specialized companies and laboratories, have been the development of special hardfacing and corrosion resistant materials, which have achieved excellent results in Off-Shore application. Most of the main materials used are as follows: Stellite-Duplex-6MO Inconel 625-Nickel Alloy 686 Ultimet-Alloy(UNSR31233) Tungsten Carbide.
Special Features: Coating & Overlay Electroless Nickel Plating The transport of wet hydrocarbon gases contaminated with hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide or other similar fluids containing appreciable level of sulphur, can create various corrosion problems to some component in plug valves. These environments are not always recognized under service conditions, therefore in order to obtain a high quality corrosion resistant, all the material for each component of the valves, are selected in accordance with the requirements of NACE-Std. MR-01-75 Latest Edition. Moreover the use of an electroless nickel plating on plug surface provides more corrosion protection to hydrogen sulphide crack-resistant base metal. Standard ENP is in accordance with ASTM B733 Std with a minimun 0.003 (76 Microns) thickness, unless otherwise specified in the customer s specification.
