Leading the Way in Electricity TM SCE s Conceptual Plans to Launch ZigBee Enabled Programs and Services Connectivity Week June 10, 2009 1
About Southern California Edison Largest electric utility in California Peak load 23,300 MW (2007) 4.6 million customers Serving central, coastal and southern (50,000 sq. miles) PG&E Peak load growth higher than energy growth Increasing costs to serve peak load 24,000 22,000 Peak Load Growth 61% 59% LADWP SCE SDG&E MW 20,000 57% 55% 18,000 53% 16,000 51% 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 MW Demand Load Factor 2
SCE s Demand Response Program Portfolio Today s portfolio includes over 1,600 MWs of dispatchable load: Emergency programs: Customers reduce load when triggered by a system emergency to contractually determined levels in exchange for an incentive, usually a bill discount on an annual basis Emergency Programs - 1400 MW Large Commercial Interruptible Residential/commercial air conditioning cycling Agricultural pumping interruptible Price response programs: Customers reduce load at critical times based on dynamic pricing of energy and/or capacity ( pay-forperformance ) Price Response Programs - 240 MW Critical Peak Pricing/RTP Rates Demand Bidding Capacity Bidding Aggregator Contracts 3
