Wilo Comfort Vario Controller VR Setup and Function Description, Comfort Vario Controller VR 12 Illustration : Activation of peak-load pumps 1 Standby 8 Switch-on point (standby circuit only) of the peak-load pump 1 at 2/26 zat 96 % speed of base duty *. Setpoint 6 as before Speed (2/26 z) up to max. 5 z at MVISE, or max. 65 z at MVIE/MIE Permissible control range: Setpoint 5, bar = control range ±,1 bar Setpoint 5, bar = control range ± 2 % of setpoint 2 Base duty Peak-load 1 Peak-load 2 2 6 8 1 12 1 16 Fig. 1: Cut-in of peak-load pumps * pauses the base duty pump with available Dr = Deactivation of peak-load pump after 15 seconds Function description The Wilo Comfort Vario pressure booster plant is monitored and controlled by the Comfort Vario controller in conjunction with a number of pressure and level control sensors. The pumps will be switched on or off in the cascade mode under pressure related control within the control range according to load demand. Splitting the total duty over a number of pumps, each of which featuring infinitely variable speed control by integrated/adapted frequency converter, will ensure a continual duty adaptation to the ever changing load / consumption within the preset pressure control range width. The permitted control range is up to a setpoint value of 5. bar ±.1 bar. In the case of a setpoint value greater than 5. bar, the permitted control range is ±2% of the set setpoint value. A precondition for this is that the rate of change of flow velocity on water draw-off is not greater than the control reaction speed of a pump, (1 second ramp run-up time of the frequency converter) or on overload on a pump = ramp time + time delay on starting the peak-load pump(s). Activation of base-load pump The base-load pump starts undelayed under automatic control if the system pressure drops below the programmed setpoint value. The pump integrated frequency converter will, within the control range, control its performance (from zero to maximum flow) matching it infinitely variably to the load condition of the system. Series MVISE pumps allow a speed range in the frequency range from 2 z to 5 z. Cut-in of peak-load pumps (see Fig. 1) On rising water supply demand the base-load pump will first run up to its maximum speed. Speed control is blocked at this point to allow this pump to operate at optimum efficiency. Peak-load pump 1 now assumes the control function. It had already been started by the Comfort Vario controller at 96% speed of the base-load pump. But this only takes the form of a standby function (2/26 z operation) so that the control function can be assumed without delay in the event that the power of the base-load pump is exceeded. This ensures that the pressure surge that normally occurs is reliably prevented even when the peak-load pump is cut in. If a steady state ensues after the 1st peak-load pump has been activated, i.e. there is no further recording of rising system water demand, the peak-load pump is shut down again after a period of 15 s has elapsed, thus avoiding unnecessary waste of electric power. During the period that peak-load pump 1 is on standby it has no influence whatsoever on the hydraulic performance of the overall pressure booster plant due to its low speed in 2 z operation. 296 As of: 6/2 - Subject to change without prior notice

Wilo Comfort Vario Controller VR Setup and Function Description, Comfort Vario Controller VR 12 Illusration 2: Deactivation of peak-load pumps 1 Standby 8 Lowering of peak-load pump speed Transferring the base duty pump to the control Lowering of peak-load pump speed level to 2 / 26 z. Deactivation of peak-load pump after 15 seconds Setpoint 6 Permissible control range: Setpoint 5, bar = control range ±,1 bar Setpoint 5, bar = control range ± 2 % of setpoint 2 Base duty Peak-load 1 Peak-load 2 2 6 8 1 12 1 16 Fig. 2: Deactivation of peak-load pumps The start of additional peak-load pumps is initiated analogue to the above description. Automatic speed control of all previously operating pumps will be deactivated and the control duty is taken over by the newly started pump. Economical operation at rated full speed and optimum efficiency is thus achieved of the already fully loaded pumps. Deactivation of peak-load pumps (see Fig. 2) When water demand reduces, the peak-load pump in operation is first run down until it no longer has any influence on the hydraulic performance of the pressure booster plant. This is the case when its delivery head due to the speed change drops below the setpoint delivery head at the duty point and thus below the performance range of the base-/peak-load pump still running up to this point at max. blocked speed. The Comfort - Vario controller will then actuate the transfer of the next peak-load or base-load pump respectively to automatically controlled Variable speed operation. The speed of the already run down peak-load pump will be reduced to the most possible minimum of 2 z. The peak-load pump will be fully switched off after a time delay of 15 seconds. Other still running peak-load pumps will be successively switched off on continually dropping water supply demand analogue to the above stated descriptions. As of: 6/2 - Subject to change without prior notice 297

Wilo Comfort Vario Controller VR Setup and Function Description, Comfort Vario Controller VR 12 Illustration : Zero-quantity test or cut-out 1 Standby Raising the setpoint by.1 baror by 2 % of the setpoint 8 Resetting the setpoint to previously defined default Setpoint [m] 6 Reducing the speed until the speed and pressure are constant Then zero-quantity test Time cycle of 6 sec. 2 Base duty Peak-load 1 Peak-load 2 2 6 8 1 12 1 16 Fig. : Zero-flow test or deactivation Zero-flow test or deactivation of base-load pump (see Fig. ) In order to prevent the system from hunting and the potentially associated pressure fluctuations, the Comfort Vario controller deactivates the entire pressure booster plant only when there is no water drawn off whatsoever. The preconditions for this state are established by the so-called zero flow test as carried out by the Comfort Vario controller. The minimum requirements are that only the base-load pump is still running and the system pressure and the speed of the base-load pump have remained constant for a specific, parameterizable timeframe. The zero-flow test is initiated and performed by the Comfort Vario controller if these requirements are satisfied. To this end, the setpoint pressure value is raised for 6 seconds to a level increased by.1 bar (at setpoint pressure values 5. bar). At setpoint pressure values > 5. bar the increase is 2% of the nominal value. After that the setpoint is set back to its original level. If, during that time, the actual system pressure remains at the raised setpoint level, the pressure booster plant is deactivated as water is no longer being drawn off. owever, if the actual pressure drops by a minimum of.1 bar in relation to the raised setpoint level, the baseload pump continues to operate as water is still being drawn off. 298 As of: 6/2 - Subject to change without prior notice
