MEROPA XL High Performance with Long Lubricant Life Meropa XL gear oils are approved by Siemens MD and engineered for outstanding performance to extend the oil life and help reduce maintenance costs. For a gear oil to meet Siemens MD approval, it must have a minimum of 10,000 hours 1 lubricant life. For customers, long lubricant life combined with the ability to extend oil drain intervals depends largely on the age and condition of the equipment and the speed, load and environment in which it operates.* * Always follow OEM recommendations. To meet Siemens MD requirements gear oils must pass the four-step, FAG FE-8 Roller Bearing Test. This test measures the weight loss due to micropitting of the rolling elements and cage materials of the bearing. The test evaluates the gear oil s ability to ensure wear protection to help prevent micropitting. Using a load of 80 kn at a speed of 7.5 rpm for 80 hours, Meropa XL showed total roller weight loss of 1.0 mg well under the maximum allowable amount of 30 mg. The four-step test results reveal a very high micropitting load-carrying capacity and high endurance micropitting performance. Micropitting Meropa XL gear oils help prevent micropitting and can reduce the likelihood of macropitting development. Micropitting is a fatigue condition that creates wear on bearing surfaces and gear teeth. The wear begins as tiny pits that are barely visible to the eye. The tiny pits appear as a dull gray stain on the gear teeth and cause material loss and a change in the profile form of the tooth flanks. Over time, the micropitting can weaken and further deteriorate the gear tooth surface. An uneven gear tooth surface can eventually lead to noise and vibration of the gears. If micropitting goes unchecked with resulting extreme gear tooth deterioration, macropitting can occur causing catastrophic gear failure. Lubricant Micropitting Resistance: Load Stage Test Many competitive industrial gear oils demonstrate good micropitting protection in the Load Stage Test of the FVA-54 Micropitting Resistance Procedure, but are unable to sustain micropitting resistance durability in the Endurance Test. The Load Stage Test is used to evaluate a lubricant s micropitting resistance to protect the gear system. The Load Stage Test is conducted by using a step load determination where the gear system is incrementally loaded in steps of 1-10 load stages. Each stage runs for 16 hours. The test protocol measures the extent of surface wear by gear tooth profile deviation in load stages 7-10. This is measured in micron change using profilometry. Maximum micron change of 7.5 µm (microns) is the test limit. Meropa XL demonstrated a high micropitting resistance performance. In stage steps 7-10, it showed a profile deviation well under the 7.5 µm test limit. The test is run at a constant stage 10 loading and the surface profile deviation is measured in increments of 80 hours. The lubricant s micropitting resistance durability is higher when the gear tooth profile deviation is less than 20 µm (microns) throughout the endurance portion of the test. A duration of >300 hours is considered outstanding durability resistance against micropitting. In the Endurance Test, Meropa XL maintained a profile deviation of slightly above 5 µm for a duration of 480 hours far below the failure rate limit!
