FRONT SEAT Adjusting front seats Seat adjustment precautions Adjust the driver s seat so that the foot pedals, steering wheel and instrument panel controls are within easy reach of the driver. Do not adjust the seat while the vehicle is moving as the seat may unexpectedly move and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Be careful not to hit the seat against a passenger, luggage or the rear seat. NOTICE: Do not operate the control switch in more than one dimension at a time. It may cause electrical overload. Seat back angle and headrest control switch Seat position control switch, seat cushion angle and height control switch (driver s seat only) Lumbar support control switch (driver s seat only) 42
Adjusting seat position Control switch Move the control switch in the desired direction. Releasing the switch will stop the seat in that position. Do not place anything under the seat. It might interfere with the seat movement. Adjusting seatback angle Move the control switch in the desired direction. Releasing the switch will stop the seatback in that position. To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, avoid reclining the seatback any more than needed. The seat belts provide maximum protection when the driver and the passenger are sitting up straight and well back in the seats. If you are reclining, the lap belt may slide past your hips and apply restraint forces directly to the abdomen. Therefore, in the event of a frontal collision, the risk of personal injury may increase with increasing recline of the seatback. Adjusting seat cushion angle and height (driver s seat only) Control switch Control switch Move the control switch in the desired direction. Control switch 43

Adjusting lumbar support (driver s seat only) HEADRESTS Front seats (manual type) Control switch Unlock 44 Push the control switch on either side. The amount of lumbar support will change as long as the switch is pushed. To raise the headrest, pull it up. To lower it, press the lock release button and push the headrest down. To move the headrest forward, pull on the top. Pulling the top of the headrest forward as far as it can go will return it to the upright position. The headrest is most effective when it is close to your head. Therefore, using a cushion on the seatback is not recommended. Adjust the top of the headrest so that it is closest to the top of your ears. After adjusting the headrest, make sure it is locked in position. Do not drive with the headrests removed.
Front seats (power type) Control switch Pulling the top of the headrest as far forward as it can go will return it to the upright position. The headrest is most effective when it is close to your head. Therefore, using a cushion on the seatback is not recommended. Adjust the top of the headrest so that it is closest to the top of your ears. Do not drive with the headrests removed. Rear seats Move the control switch in the desired direction. Releasing the switch will stop the headrest in that position. Unlock To raise the headrest, pull it up. To lower it, press the lock release button and push the headrest down. To move the headrest forward, pull on the top. 45

TILT AND TELESCOPIC STEERING WHEEL To adjust the tilt of the steering wheel, push the control switch upward or downward to set it to the desired position. This adjustment should not be made while the vehicle is moving. ADJUSTMENT OF TELESCOPIC STEERING COLUMN Power tilt and telescopic type ADJUSTMENT OF STEERING WHEEL TILT To adjust the steering column length, push the control switch forward or backward to set the steering wheel to the desired position. This adjustment should not be made while the vehicle is moving. 46
Auto made When the tilt and telescopic steering wheel auto mode button on the steering column is set to the ON position, the current position of the steering column becomes the memorized position. Power tilt and manual telescopic type ADJUSTMENT OF STEERING WHEEL TILT On Off When the ignition key is removed with the auto mode button set to the ON position, the steering column moves forward away from the driver and also tilts up for easy exit and entry. When the key is inserted in the ignition, the steering column returns to the memorized position. This occurs regardless of whether the auto mode button is ON or OFF. To adjust the tilt of the steering wheel, push the control switch upward or downward to set it to the desired position. This adjustment should not be made while the vehicle is moving. 47
ADJUSTMENT OF TELESCOPIC STEERING COLUMN On Lock Unlock To adjust the steering column length, push the lock release lever down, push or pull the steering wheel to the desired position, and pull the lever fully up until a click is heard. This adjustment should not be made while the vehicle is moving. After adjusting the steering wheel, try moving it up and down to make sure it is locked in position. Auto mode When the tilt steering wheel auto mode button on the steering column is set to the ON position, the current position of the steering column becomes the memorized position. Off When the ignition key is removed with the auto mode button set to the ON position, the steering column tilts up for easy exit and entry. When the key is inserted in the ignition, the steering column returns to the memorized position. This occurs regardless of whether the auto mode button is ON or OFF. 48
OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRRORS Power rear view mirror control Control switch Master switch Adjust the mirror so you can just see the side of your vehicle in the mirror. Be careful when judging the size or distance of any object seen in the outside rear view mirror on the passenger s side. It is a convex mirror with a curved surface. Any object seen in a convex mirror will look smaller and farther away than if seen in a normal flat mirror. To adjust the power rear view mirror, first place the master switch at R (right) or L (left), and push the control switch on the desired side. If the engine is not running, the key must he in the ACC position for operation of the power rear view mirror. NOTICE: If ice should jam the mirror, do not operate the control or scrape the mirror face. Use a spray de-icer to free the mirror. 49
Folding rear view mirrors To fold the rear view mirror, push backward. The rear view mirrors can be folded backward for parking in restricted areas. INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR The mirror surface is normal when switched to DAY, and appears slightly darker when switched to NIGHT as its reflectivity is reduced. While driving at night, switching the inside rear view mirror to NIGHT by pushing the button can reduce the reflection of the headlights of following vehicles. Adjust it before driving so that the rear view is tire best. Each time the button is pushed, the mode is switched between DAY and NIGHT. When the ignition key is removed, the status of the mirror at that time is memorized. When the outside air temperature is low, switching between DAY and NIGHT may be a little slower. SEAT BELTS Seat belt precautions Lexus recommends that the driver and passengers in the vehicle be properly restrained at all times with the seat belts provided. Failure to do so could increase the chance of injury and/ or the severity of injury in accidents. Baby or small child. Use a child restraint system which fits your vehicle. See Child restraint for details. 50
Child. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle s seat belts. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. Do not allow the child to stand up or kneel on the seat. If the shoulder belt falls across the child s neck or face, move the child to the center position and use the center lap belt. Pregnant woman. Lexus recommends the use of a seal belt. Ask your doctor for specific recommendations. The lap belt should be worn securely and as low as possible over the hips and not on the waist. Injured person. Lexus recommends the use of a seat belt. Depending on the injury, however, first check with your doctor. Persons should ride in their seats properly wearing their seat belts whenever the vehicle is moving. Otherwise, they are much more likely to suffer serious bodily injury in the event of sudden braking or a collision. When using the seat belts, observe the following: Use the belt for only one person at a time. Do not use a single belt for two or more people even children. Avoid reclining the seatbacks too much. The seat belts provide maximum protection when the seatbacks are in the upright position. (See Adjusting seatback angle. ) Be careful not to damage the belt webbing or hardware. Take care that they do not get caught or pinched in the seat or doors. Inspect the belt system periodically. Check for cuts, fraying, and loose parts. Damaged parts should be replaced. Do not disassemble or modify the system. Keep the belts clean and dry. If they need cleaning, use a mild soap solution or lukewarm water. Never use bleach, dye, or abrasive cleaners they may severely weaken the belts. Replace the belt assembly if it has been used in a severe impact. The entire assembly should be replaced even if damage is not obvious. Replace the seat belt if the warning label under the sleeve can be seen. The warning label, REPLACE BELT, will appear if the belt receives a severe impact or other force. 51

To fasten your belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the tab into the buckle. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. The seat belt length automatically adjusts to your size and the seat position. The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It also may lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend, and you can move around freely. If the seat belt cannot he pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor. After inserting the tab, make sure that the connection is secure and the belt is not twisted. Adjust the position of the lap and shoulder belts. Position the lap belt as low as possible on your hips not on your waist, then adjust it to a snug fit by pulling the shoulder portion upward through the latch plate. High positioned lap belts and loose fitting shoulder belts both could increase the chance of injury due to sliding under the lap belt during an accident. For your safety, do not place the shoulder belt under your arm.
Unlock Adjust the shoulder anchor position to your size. (manual type) To raise the anchor position, push the anchor up. To lower the anchor position, push the lock release button and slide the anchor down. After the adjustment, make sure the anchor is locked in position. Always be sure that the belt is positioned across your shoulder, as close to your neck as possible; not on your upper arm or neck. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of protection in an accident and increase the chance of injury. (power type) To adjust the shoulder anchor position, press the upper or lower part of the control switch located on the door. When the switch is released, the shoulder anchor will stop at that position. Always be sure that the belt is positioned across your shoulder, as close to your neck as possible; not on your upper arm or neck. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of protection in an accident and increase the chance of injury. 53
To release the belt, press the buckle release button and allow the belt to retract. If the belt does not retract smoothly, pull it out and check for kinks or twist. Then make sure that it remains untwisted as it retracts. Rear outside seat belts Sit up straight and well back in the seat. To fasten your belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the tab into the buckle. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. The seat belt length automatically adjusts to your size. The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It also may lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend, and you can move around freely. When the shoulder belt is completely extended and is then retracted even slightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This feature is used to hold the child restraint system securely. (For details, see Child restraint on page 60.) To free the belt again, fully retract the belt and then pull the belt out once more. If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the bell and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor. After inserting the tab, make sure that the connection is secure and the belt is not twisted. 54

You will hear a click when the lab locks into the buckle. If the belt is not long enough for you, hold the tab at a right angle to the belt and pull on the tab. After inserting the tab, make sure that the connection is secure and the belt is not twisted. Remove excess length of the belt and adjust the belt position. To shorten the belt, pull the free end of the belt. Position the lap belt as low as possible on your hips not on your waist, then adjust it to a snug fit. High positioned lap belts could increase the chance of injury due to sliding under the lap belt during an accident. 56
Never use the seat belt extender if you can fasten the seat belt without it. Remember that the extender provided for you may not be safe when used on a different vehicle, or for another person or at a different seating position than the one originally intended for. To release the belt, press the buckle release button. Seat belt extender If your seat belt cannot be fastened securely because it is not long enough, a personalized seat belt extender is available from your Lexus dealer free of charge. Please contact your local Lexus dealer so that the dealer can order the proper required length for the extender. Bring the heaviest coat you expect to wear for proper measurement and selection of length. Additional ordering information is available at your Lexus dealer. When using the seat belt extender, observe the following. Failure to follow these instructions could result in less effectiveness of the seat belt restraint system in case of vehicle accident, increasing the chance of personal injury. Seat belt extender To connect the extender to the seat belt, insert the tab into the seat belt buckle so that the PRESS signs on the buckle release buttons of the extender and the seat belt are both facing outward as shown. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. When releasing the seat belt, press on the buckle release button on the extender, not on the seat belt. This helps prevent damage to the vehicle interior and extender itself. When not in use, remove the extender and store in the vehicle for future rise. 57
After inserting the tab, make sure that the connection is secure and the seat belt extender is not twisted. SRS AIRBAG Components of supplemental restraint system Front airbag sensors Warning light Steering wheel pad assembly (airbag and inflator) Center airbag sensor assembly The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbag is designed to be activated in response to a severe frontal impact within the shaded area as shown in the illustration, and to provide the driver with further protection in addition to the protection provided by the driver s seat belt. The center airbag sensor assembly consists of a safing sensor and center airbag sensor. In the event of a severe frontal impact, a front airbag sensor and safing sensor, or center airbag sensor and safing sensor detect the shock, the center airbag sensor assembly triggers the inflator, and the inflator fills the hag to help restrain the driver s forward motion. 58
The SRS airbag system is not designed to protect the driver from an impact from the side or rear, or if the vehicle overturns. When the SRS airbag inflates, an operating noise will be heard and a small amount of smoke-like gas will be released. This gas is harmless and does not indicate that a fire is occurring. The SRS airbag system is designed only as a supplement to the driver s seat belt system. To obtain maximum protection in an accident, the driver and all passengers in the vehicle should always wear his/her seat belts when driving. For instructions and precautions concerning the seat belt system, see SEAT BELTS on page 50. Do not modify or remove any component or wiring, such as the steering wheel, column cover, center airbag sensor assembly or front airbag sensors. Doing any of these may cause sudden SRS airbag inflation or disable the system, which could result in personal injury. NOTICE: Do not perform any of the following changes without prior approval from your Lexus dealer. Repairs or service of this kind can interfere with proper operation of the SRS airbag system in some cases. Installation of electronic items such as a mobile two-way radio or cassette tape player. Repairs made on or near the front fenders, front console, steering column or steering wheel. This SRS airbag system has a warning light to indicate operating problems. See SRS airbag warning light on page 25. In the following cases, contact your Lexus dealer as soon as possible: The SRS airbag system malfunctions. The SRS airbag has been inflated. The front part of the vehicle (shown in the illustration) was involved in an accident not of the extent to cause the SRS airbag to inflate. The pad section of the steering wheel is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged. NOTICE: Do not disconnect the battery cables before contacting your Lexus dealer. Pad 59
CHILD RESTRAINT Child restraint precautions Lexus strongly urges the use of child restraint systems for children small enough for the child restraint system. The laws of all fifty states in the U.S.A. and Canada now require the use of a child restraint system. For effective protection in automobile accidents and sudden stops, children must not be transported unrestrained. Holding a child in your arms is not a substitute for a child restraint system. In an accident, a child held in a person s arms can be crushed between the vehicle s interior and an unrestrained person. Child restraint system A child restraint system for a small child or baby must itself be restrained on the seat with either the lap belt or the lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt. The child restraint system should contour to the size of the child and properly fit the vehicle seat. For a higher degree of safety, the, child restraint system should be installed in the rear seal. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. When installing a child restraint system on the front seat, you must use a locking clip for the front seat belts. When installing a child restraint system, refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the system and follow the directions listed under the following illustrations. If your child restraint requires the use of a top strap, your vehicle is provided with anchors for securing the top strap of a child restraint system. The anchor nuts are welded beneath the sheet metal to permit installation of an anchor bracket for a child restraint system. To install an anchor bracket, use an 8 mm x 30 mm x 1.25 mm coarse thread metric bolt and a 0.4 in. (10 mm) spacer for either outside anchor or a 0.6 in. (15 mm) spacer for the center anchor. Note that the bolts accompanying many child restraint systems are not metric. You can damage the anchor nuts on your vehicle if you force bolts with different thread into the anchor nuts. If any of the necessary parts do not come with your child restraint system, you can purchase them from your Lexus dealer. Details are as follows: CBS installation kit (Part No. 04731-22012) Kit contains bolt, 3 types of spacers and locking clip. Bolt (Part No. 91511-60830) Locking clip (Part No. 73119-22010) 60
After installation, make sure the child restraint system is secured in place. If the child restraint system is not restrained securely, it may cause injury to the child in case of vehicle accident and sudden stops. When not using the child restraint system, keep it secured with the seat belt or remove it and place it in the trunk or somewhere other than in the vehicle to prevent injury to passengers in the event of a sudden stop or accident. INSTALLATION ON REAR SEAT CENTER INSTALLATION ON REAR SEAT OUTSIDE Top strap Top strap Anchor bracket 1. Fasten the center lap belt over the child restraint system. 2. Tighten the lap belt. If your child restraint system requires the use of a top strap, latch the hook onto the anchor bracket and tighten the top strap. Anchor bracket 1. Fasten the lap and shoulder belt over the child restraint system. 2. Keep slack out of the lap portion of the belt. 3. Place the shoulder portion of the belt between the vehicle seatback and the child restraint system. 4. Fully extend the shoulder belt from the retractor and release it to allow it to retract. This locks the shoulder belt, which holds the child restraint system securely. Try pulling out the shoulder belt to make sure that it is securely locked. If your child restraint system requires the use of a top strap, latch the hook onto the anchor bracket and tighten the top strap. 61
Top strap anchors and locations On the filler panel behind the rear seat. Spacer 10 mm (0.4 in.) Spacer 15 mm (0.6 in.) Bolt Anchor bracket 370 mm (14.5 in.) To comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, vehicles sold in Canada are provided with a bracket set in the glovebox, designed for use with the center location shown in the illustration. If you want to install the bracket set on either outside anchor, replace the spacer (Part No. 90560-08061) with one that is 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick. This can be purchased from your Lexus dealer. INSTALLATION ON FRONT SEAT 35 mm (1.5 in.) 90 mm (3.5 in.) a. Using the illustration as a guide, run your fingers across the trim of the filler panel to locate the position of holes underneath. b. Make a hole in the covering directly above the hole in the filler panel. c. Remove the seals from the anchors using a screwdriver or the like. d. Insert a 10 mm (0.4 in.) spacer for either outside anchor or a 15 mm (0.6 in.) spacer for the center anchor, and tighten down the anchor bracket for your child restraint system with a bolt. Torque the bolt to 16.5 24.7 N. m (1.68 2.52 kgf. m, 12.2 18.2 ft-lb). Locking clip 1. Fasten the lap and shoulder belt over the child restraint system 2. Keep slack out of the lap portion of the belt. 3. Holding the tab in that position, release the buckle. 4. Install a locking clip near the tab of the lap and shoulder belt. (See instructions in the next column.) 62
5. Buckle the belt again. If necessary, slide the seat forward and remove any slack. 6. Place the shoulder portion of the belt between the vehicle seatback and the child restraint system. Top strap Locking clip If your child restraint system requires the use of a top strap, latch the hook onto the tab of the rear center seat belt and tighten the top strap. To install the locking clip, thread the lap and shoulder webbing through the recesses of the locking clip. Alway remove the locking clip when the child restraint system is not installed. DRIVING POSITION MEMORY SYSTEM The micro computer can memorize the position of the driver s seat, the height of the shoulder belt anchor of the driver s seat belt, and the positions of the tilt and telescopic steering, and outside rear view mirrors. Two different driving position profiles can be entered into the computer s memory. Recording a driving position in the computer s memory can only be done when the ignition key is in the ON position and the shift lever is in the P position. 63
Setting a driving position To make only slight changes to an already memorized position, the easiest way is to first activate the memorized position, then make the desired changes and perform step 2 above. Activating a memorized position 1. Adjust the driver s seat, driver s shoulder belt anchor, tilt and telescopic steering and outside rear view mirrors to the desired position. 2. While pushing the SET button, push button 1 or 2 until the signal beeps. The beep sound means that the positions are recorded in the computer s memory By repeating these two steps and pressing the remaining button, the driving position for another driver can be recorded. To set a new memorized position, select the desired position and perform step 2. The previous memory will be erased and the new position will be set. When you push button 1 or 2, the driving position will be automatically adjusted to the position recorded for that button. Conditions for memorized position activation Ignition key ON and shift lever in P position. All parts of the memorized positions can be activated. However, if the brake pedal is being depressed, the seat position will not change. 64
Key not in ignition switch and within 30 seconds of opening driver s door. The memorized position can be activated, except for the tilt and telescopic steering. This will be activated when the key is inserted into the ignition switch. If any driving position memory switch is pushed while one of the memorized driving position profiles is being activated, the operation will stop. To activate the system, push the desired button ( 1 or 2 ) again. The driving position memory control system cannot be operated while the vehicle is moving. If the vehicle s battery is disconnected, the computer s memory will be erased and the memorized positions will have to be set again. Do not start the vehicle while the adjustments are being made. Take care not to select the wrong button, or the seat could strike the rear passenger or hit your body against the steering wheel. If this happens, you can stop the movement by pressing another driving position memory switch, or depressing the brake pedal. 65
