Accident Countermeasures

These countermeasures are designed to help our company and our Owner Operator partners to cover important and meaningful safety topics in a convenient way for you. Take the time to go through the materials and then answer the questions at the end. The completed answers need to be handed in so you can receive credit for completing the course. Here are some recent examples of this type of accident. 2

Driver cost 3000.00 Accord cost 1100.00 plus increased insurance and trailer downtime. Example I 3

Driver cost 1200 Accord costs include increased insurance and administration. Example 2 4

Driver cost 3000 Accord cost 7500 for trailer as it was a wright off. Plus 7000 for rental replacement to cintinue to serve the customer. Increased insurance and administration. Example 3 5

Did you know The leading cause of property loss is collisions with stationary objects followed closely with backing accidents. Avoiding stationary objects is a critical skill for a profitable professional driver All stationary object collisions are preventable Often these accidents occur in view of witnesses and/or cameras and can result in very high losses. 6

Avoid distraction. Hang up the phone. Put down the drink. Use correct entrance don t get caught in a car parking lot Obey the posted speed. Even drive a bit slower to give your self extra time to avoid a collision. Use 4 way flashers in a busy yard. The flash attracts peoples peripheral vision. 7

Constantly scan for: Back up light on vehicles in stalls Low overhang wires, awnings, advertising signs Pedestrians they will step out from behind other vehicles Turn clearances even your trailer tail swing. Post, poles and bollards that are often placed to protect fuel pumps and fire hydrants Always keep scanning for hazards. Remember you PPE and check that it is safe before you leave the vehicle 8

Some one pulls in behind you while backing Object is not visible in your mirrors Corner is cut too sharp or wide Overhead or low objects escape attention Tail swing -especially when the axel is forward is not properly planned for Pedestrians have a sense of security in parking/ fueling areas and don t look out Talking on phone or sorting papers or putting in a cd while moving. 9

Avoid unnecessary backing Avoid blind side backing Reduce distraction. Leave the phone call and paperwork until after you stop Roll down your window to hear better When Backing remember GOAL. Get Out And Look. Walk and ensure your backing path is clear and should remain clear. Once back in the vehicle, check again in mirrors and sound horn before you shift to reverse. While backing keep alert. Don t rely only on your mirrors Never back up if you can t see clearly because of rain frost or ice on the mirror 10

Truck stops are high accident frequency places. Drivers tend to be tired after a long shift behind the wheel It feels like you have arrived and there is a tendency to let your guard down Don t rush or mess with the receipt and card when leaving the fuel island. Try to be in a well lit area Avoid the end of a row- the place most likely to get hit. 11

Here are some common causes. Avoid them and you may avoid an accident. Intersection errors- 65% of urban accidents occur at an intersection. Always use the left right and left again method of scanning before entering an intersection. Inattention. No matter what is going on your primary responsibility is controlling the vehicle. Driving conditions adapt to ice snow rain fog Unsafe speed. Increased speed reduces reaction time and increases injuries. 12
