GOLDMUND ST4 TURNTABLE USER MANUAL WARNING! This high quality turntable possess new technical features which are necessary for an accurate tracking of the today's records. Only a careful use can provide all satisfactions you are expecting. The mounting instructions must be SCRUPULOUSLY carried out. All handling must be performed according to the following instructions to avoid to deteriorate the turntable. Nevertheless, if the instructions are perfectly carried out, you will notice that the use of the GOLDMUND ST4 is quite simple and convenient. IMPORTANT : PLEASE DO NOT CONNECT ANY WIRE OR MOVE ANY PART BEFORE READING THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS. 1- PRELIMINARIES Please read very carefully the following instructions. This high-precision turntable will provide the best tracking conditions for the best high-quality phono cartridge. For exacting technicians, musicians, and all those who demand the very best in record transcription, we strongly recommend the use of our famous CLEARAUDIO GOLDMUND and CLEARAUDIO GOLDMUND GOLD cartridges. 2. UNPACKING You will find in the packing: - the dust cover, - the turntable by itself with its T4 tonearm, - the mounting accessories: the power supply one spare spring one box of accessories, - the turntable platter.

To unpack the above-mentionned parts, please follow these steps: Unpack first the cover. Take care of avoiding to scratch it by keeping the cover on a soft, nonabrasiv surface. Pull out the foam and cardboard protecting the table and the protection and accessories around it. Take the table out of the box carefully. Take out the platter. Keep the whole packing for future use. WARNING: If you need to return the table to the factory or to your local representative for a warranty repair, please note that it must be repacked in the original packing. Otherwise new packing will be charged as well as the repair of damages occured due to poor packing conditions. 3. POWER SUPPLY Your unit is built to operate with the mains voltage of your area. Check on the power supply unit in any doubt. If you move after purchasing the turntable to an area using different mains voltage, consult your local GOLDMUND dealer to exchange your power supply unit. Every power supply can operate indifferently with 50 or 60 Hz mains. To avoid any hum or vibration disturbance, put the power supply in a mains socket as far apart as possible from the turntable itself. Allow some clearance for air circulation around the power supply, as this unit, in normal use, generate some heat. 4. TURNTABLE LOCATION Select a very rigid support for your turntable. Due to the exceptional quality of its suspension, the GOLDMUND ST4 turntable is less critical than any other design in placement selection. Feedback is mostly so low that no special precaution is required. Nevertheless, position the table as far as you can of the speakers if you want to totally avoid the air coupling between the speakers and the table. Select a position of the furniture where the table is set to have the most rigid possible position on the floor. Solid coupling is essential, and if your support is standing on a suspended floor, optimal result requires that you arrange the support to have at least one foot over a supporting beam or close enough from a supporting wall. 5. FIRST ADJUSTMENTS Adjust the three black feet of the turntable to level the wood base, using the bubble level as a reference. Note that this adjustment is not critical. Remove the center locking screw with the 5mm allen key furnished. WARNING: Each time you will have to move your GOLDMUND ST4 turntable, you will have to relock this screw in position. Furthermore, please note that the platter must be removed before any turntable transport, even for a short distance. 6. SPRINGS SELECTION

For proper working and maximum efficiency of the low- frequency decoupling suspension, GOLDMUND choosed the right spring combination according to the kind of arm used. Three springs are provided with different color marking. The table is delivered with the spring combination appropriate for use of the GOLDMUND T4 straight-line tone-arm and should not be changed except for very special use. 7. CONTROL PANEL Plug the power supply in the turntable socket, located on the back panel. Put the table on by setting the left switch to the ON position. Speed selection is performed by setting of the second switch noted 33-45. The LOCK indicator glows as soon as the precise speed (regulated by quartz) is reached. 8. PLATTER SET-UP Put the platter on the motor axis. The position is indifferent and adjustment of the leveling has been made at the factory. If you need to readjust the leveling after exchanging the motor, unscrew very carefully one of the top three bolts on the motor assembly until the platter rotates flatly. In case of difficulty, consult your nearest GOLDMUND dealer. 9. T4 TONE-ARM ADJUSTMENT A. cartridge set-up For the following steps leave the stylus cover on your cartridge. Unlock the tube of the tone arm from the pilot arm by unscrewing the two white nylon screws of the locking clamp. Unscrew the four small screws attaching the headshell to the headshell support, with one of the allen keys provided. Mount your cartridge on the headshell, on the engraved face. The headshell has a flat side and one indented. The indented one is facing the cartridge body. Don't tighten the screw to allow the next position adjustment. Insert the four plugs of the tonearm wiring on the cartridge pins, following the international code: Red : Hot wire, right channel. Green : Ground wire, right channel. White : Hot wire, left channel. Blue : ground wire, left channel. NOTE: The very high quality plugs used by GOLDMUND are not adjustable in size, even if they accept a large majority of the current cartridge pins. Your GOLDMUND dealer may provide you with smaller plugs of the same quality if needed (old KOETSU, SUPEX,..). Attach now the headshell and cartridge on the tone arm end with the 4 small screws. Tighten those progressively all four simul;taneously. Take care of the thin wires. Don't overtighten the very thin screws.

B. CARTRIDGE POSITION ADJUSTMENT To align the cartridge in the T4 tonearm, it is sufficient to adjust its position on the headshell so, when the carriage moves toward the turntable spindle, the line followed by the stylus crosses the spindle center. Adjust the cartridge, by moving it front or back so, when the carriage is moved toward the center spindle, it is on a radius of the platter. Be careful to protect the stylus when making this adjustment. When the proper position is reached, tighten the cartridges screws. C. TRACKING FORCE ADJUSTMENT Switch on the turntable to be able to activate the tonearm cueing. Be careful when activating the cueing switch not to damage the stylus. The cueing switch, located on the front plate of the turntable, must be used to lower the stylus on the gauge and to lift it up. Select the counterweight adapted to your cartridge. Insert it on the back portion of the tone arm tube, with the locking screw on the top. To reach the correct balance, you may have the counterweight either too close to the pivot or too far. It means that you have not selected the proper counterweight. Take the other one, before adjusting the tracking force. NOTE: If you use a very heavy cartridge, you may need a special very heavy counterweight. Consult your dealer to get a special GOLDMUND counterweight. Adjust now the proper tracking force, using a good gauge to fix it properly. When the balance is reached, tighten firmly the locking screw on the top of the counterweight. D. VTA ADJUSTMENT Adjust the horizontality of the tone arm rail first in both directions. To do so, untighten the four lateral screws attaching the rail to the two sides of the tone arm. Then the tone arm rail can be lifted vertically by adjusting the four vertical screws located under the 4 corners of the tone arm rail. By adjusting each separately you can reach the perfect horizontality easily. When you will turn now the four screws up or down of the same number of turns, the tone arm rail will remain in a position parallel to the previous one. If the turntable is horizontal, the rail will remain horizontal too. Put an old record on the platter. Move the carriage until the stylus is approximately in the middle of the record. Cue down the tonearm. Check if the tonearm tube is parallel to the record surface. If not, you will cue the tone arm up and turn the four vertical (VTA) screws (12) of the same number of turns until the tonearm tube is approximately parallel to the record surface. Cue up before each manipulation of the VTA screws. This adjustment will be later refined, when your tone arm will be totally installed. You will rapidly notice when playing with the VTA adjustment that each cartridge has its own optimal angle, easily perceivable by listening. To find this optimal tonearm vertical position, you must proceed with successive small "up" or "down" movements around the position given by the instructions of the cartridge manufacturer until you reach the best sound quality. When the proper angle is found, your tone arm should be locked in its optimal position using the four lateral locking screws located on the two tonearm sides (12b).

ATTENTION: Never turn the VTA screws if the locking screws are tightened. Otherwise, you may damage the tonearm. E. DAMPING ADJUSTMENT The damping fluid well (9) is visible, close to the tonearm pivot. The viscosity of the fluid provided is adapted to the best today's cartridges. The perfect damping adjustment is reached by increasing or decreasing the quantity of fluid in the well. The sonic result is easily detectable. A too low damping induce bright sound, loose low end and brittle highs. A too high damping induce deadness and a non-dynamic sound. To fill and drain the fluid, use the syringe provided in the accessories box. ATTENTION: The fluid well cannot take more than 2cc. If you fill it too much, the fluid may spread out by capillarity. A small quantity of the fluid is much enough to damp the tonearm properly. To reach the perfect damping may require some use. The only good and accessible tool to help to this adjustment is the listening. Be patient and exercise. F. INTERCONNECTS LOCATION After the tone-arm set-up, connect the audio interconnects to the tone-arm, following the path explicated on the schematic of the left page. the cable must go through the back hole of the top plate of your table then, making a large loop, leave the turntable box by the right-back hole. G. FINAL ADJUSTMENTS You may, after few hours of use, refine some of the adjusment previously made, as the VTA adjustment (see above), or the damping adjustment. Consult your nearest GOLDMUND dealer if you need any help. 10. LEVELLING If the correct leveling of the metacrylate base has been executed properly in the beginning of the set-up process, you may now perform the next step to adjust the sub-chassis horizontality. Otherwise you must now adjust the box level by action on the three black feet, using an external bubble level. To level the sub-chassis, insert in each of the three holes drilled above the suspension pods one 5mm allen key provided in the accessories. Turn each one until you reach the proper level of the sub-chassis and the horizontality of the bubble level. The proper level of the sub-chassis is reached when the top plate is approximately 2mm below the top level of the box sides. 11. DUST COVER ASSEMBLY Place the back of the dust cover in front of the hinges. Insert from the back of the hinges the supplied screws. On the cover side, insert one washer and one nut. Tighten the screws with the appropriate allen key.

12. CONTROL PANEL Plug the power supply in the turntable socket, located on the back panel. Put the table on by setting the left switch to the ON position. Speed selection is performed by setting of the second switch. The glowing 33 or 45 light indicate the platter speed. The LOCK indicator glows as soon as the precise speed (regulated by quartz) is reached. 13. TONEARM USE Your tone arm is automatically powered on when the turntable is swtched on. When you move the carriage always handle it by the "handling bar" (8). In this transparent bar, a small red light shows that the electrical cueing is in progress. The electronic adjustments described below are accessible on the top of the sub-chassis below the rail by three holes. Use a small screwdriver to reach the potentiometers through the visible holes. IMPORTANT : The following electronic adjustments are only accessible for servicing. The correct settings are adjusted by the factory during the final test of your GOLDMUND T4 tone arm. They usually never need to be readjusted. Potentiometer no 0 (alone near tonearm extremity) : This potentiometer is the adjustment of the delay for the automatic cueing up at the record's end. Potentiometer no 1 (near the nr 2, the one closer to the counterweight) : To reach this adjustment, you must push the carriage toward the center of the record. The potentiometer no 1 adjust the speed of the correction motor. A too fast speed is not good for the sound quality. When the speed is too slow, the motor may have not enough strength to pull the carriage and the correction may not be performed properly. Potentiometer no 2 (toward the cartridge) : Adjusts the cueing speed. 14. CLEANING To clean the metacrylate base, you can use any of the very fine polish used for the old lacquered furniture. Always use a very soft cloth to avoid to scratch the surface. The metacrylate can also be cleaned very easily using the GOLDMUND CLEANER, available from your nearest GOLDMUND dealer. Use a soft cloth slightly wet if you have no GOLDMUND CLEANER available or if you are not sure to have a soft enough polish.
