Introduction The 600 category has seen rapid expansion over the last ten years, and the Honda CBR600F has certainly had a lot to do with it. Setting the standard for the category year in year out, this bike stands out through its amazing sporting qualities that never sacrifice comfort and enjoyment, as opposed to most of the competition. Entirely revised in 1999, the new CBR600F is the standard bearer of new technology with its high-powered engine and aluminium chassis that now directly integrates the swing arm pivot into the rear of the engine s case. It has managed to keep the spirit of total versatility that earned the series its reputation and success since it first appeared in 1987. With over 250,000 units of production, Honda s dynamic middleweight Super Sport champion, the CBR600F, is now enjoying its fourth generation of production, and still leading the class with an incomparable combination of race-winning performance and comfortable day-to-day riding ease. Featuring a highly advanced inline 4-cylinder engine and state-of-the-art aluminium twin-spar frame, the CBR600F is shrouded in highly aggressive bodywork designed for the high-powered world of racing where it has long reigned supreme. For added security against theft, the CBR also comes standard equipped with the effective Honda Ignition Security System (H.I.S.S.), which helps deter thieves by completely disabling the ignition system unless started with its originally supplied, electronically interlocked keys. Introduced in 87 - Manufactured in Japan - SUPER SPORT CBR600F - 20001 - E 1

Colouring Concept Featuring the same gradated twotone colour scheme that caught the world s eyes on its debut last year, the CBR expresses its speed and agility for the year 2000 in three new colour variations. First is a red and blue renewal of Honda s definitive tricolor, which unequivocally expresses the CBR s proud racing heritage. Next, an ominous dualfinish, metallic matte-on-gloss black variation invites images of the CBR prowling the streets like a beast of prey. Finally, a new black and pearlescent yellow variation sets down a challenge to all comers to experience the blazing performance that lies within. All variations feature the same black-painted triple-spoke wheels and the bright glint of solid aluminium to emphasise the CBR s quality and high-tech appeal. Colours Candy Tahitian Blue (with Sparkling Red) Black (with Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic) Black (with Pearl Flash Yellow) CBR600F - 20002 - E 2

Close-up New Features New colour variations. General Features Revised entirely, (new casing, new cylinder head, new dimensions, new linkage ) the engine produces 106PS at 12,500rpm. The cylinder sleeves are similar to those used on the RC45 World Championship Superbike in 1997 and on the CBR900RR. The supply has a direct air intake system that has been further improved. The air injection system reduces the exhaust pollutants. The new engine casing acts as a support for the swing arm (less weight, greater rigidity). For the first time since the arrival of the CBR600F (1987), the frame and the swing arm are made of aluminium. This gain in weight is 7kg with regard to the old model. The HMAS (Honda Multi Action Suspension) front fork is completely new (43mm ), as is the rear shock absorber. They are both fully adjustable. The front floating disc brakes are fitted with new four-piston callipers. The 5 inch rear wheel can be fitted with competition slick tyres. The CBR600F now comes fully equipped with an electronic antitheft ignition system. It features a special coded chip implanted in each of the keys supplied with the motorcycle and a coil antenna built into the ring surrounding the upper edge of the key switch that instantly detects the presence of an encoded key. To be able to start, the code is transmitted to the ignition system s CPU where it has to match the code numbers that the CPU is programmed to recognise. For any change (for example when you lose a key) you need to declare the frame number, hence the assured security. The CBR is a sports bike with many practical benefits such as the central stand. A U-shaped, anti-theft lock can be stowed under the saddle. The CBR enjoys a two year warranty and benefits from the quality of the Honda service network. CBR600F - 20003 - E 3

Evolution In 1987, at its launch, the first CBR600F boasted ten more horsepower than its direct competitors: with 85PS for only 182kg, the new Honda offered performance (220km/h maximum speed) comparable to that of 750cm 3 machines which are limited to 100PS in France and Germany. It was therefore quite logical that it should come first in all comparative tests and that it should carry off a well deserved sales success. In 1989, in order to regain its competitive edge, the CBR600F increased its performance (93PS) thanks to an increase in compression ratio, new camshafts as well as a revised ignition curve. But it was in 1991 that it was given its biggest technical and aesthetic makeover: Honda launched an entirely new machine, with a much more compact engine adopting the engineering principle of a cylinder block cast with the upper half of the crankcase. Rigidity was thus increased considerably, also benefiting the frame, with the engine now functioning as a stiffening member. The architecture of the new engine incorporated a timing drive at the end of the block, straighter ports in the head, bigger valves, with larger diameter flat valve carburettors, the overall assembly matched to a reduction in internal friction and a general reduction in the weight of moving parts. The output of 100PS was reached at that point and enabled the CBR600F to continue to dominate its category, the more so since the basic unit was not neglected with the frame, swing arms, suspension, brakes and wheels being revised also. This supremacy was evident in 600cm 3 comparisons and competition where the CBR600F led in practically all aspects. This became a world-wide phenomenon and the CBR witnessed an explosion in sales to pass the 200,000 barrier in 1996. CBR600F introduced in 1987. 1987 CBR600F - 20004 - E 4

Evolution In 1992, still without a rival, the CBR600F was given minor modifications (camshaft gears, timing chain tensioner, crankshaft bearings) and continued its success which by now deserved to go down in the annals of history. 1995 saw the arrival of significant change in the form of an identical engine bottom end but with an increased compression ratio, as was the diameter of the carburettors, revised gear selection, a bigger radiator, moving parts reworked further to reduce weight and friction. But most of all the CBR was fitted with a direct air intake system: maximum rpm increased from 13,000 to 13,500rpm, the power remaining unchanged at 100PS at 12,000rpm. The changes to the running gear affected the forks, a wider rear rim and a larger swing arm shaft, all of this without any increase in weight. The greatest technical as well as aesthetic evolution: the crucial 100PS milestone had been reached. 1991 Direct intake, increased compression ratio. 1995 More powerful engine, lighter front discs, new front mudguard, new suspension and rear-end design revised. 1997 CBR600F - 20005 - E 5

Evolution As the end of the nineties approached, the pressure on the CBR600F became more intense: the competition was almost catching up: it was time to react: The arrival of the 1999 vintage was to be the opportunity for putting matters right. And how!: the CBR600F is 100% new with an engine which has been completely reworked, it develops a mere 110PS at 12,500rpm. The running gear was not left behind, indeed it was almost revolutionary: the frame was to be aluminium, as was the swing arm attached directly to the crankcase for added stiffness. Not satisfied with re-establishing itself as the best performing 600 among the leaders, this quite exceptional CBR600F is also quite politically correct with an air injection system that substantially reduces polluting emissions. The CBR is unbeatable in any competition for 600cm 3 machines only. (World Series - 600 Supersport) 1999 CBR600F - 20006 - E 6
