Cotton Picker Installation John Deere 9970 Ag Leader Technology Installing Header Height Sensor Parts required for this procedure: Header height sensor assembly (with integral cable) Two 5/16 x 1 inch bolts with lock washers and nuts Arm assembly (threaded rod with S-hook) S-hook Cable ties Step-by-Step Procedure 1. Position the header sensor under the cab so that: 1a. The sensor is mounted on the right most cab support member. See Figure 11. Mark two of the slots onto the support member where you will drill and mount the sensor with bolts. 1b. While holding the sensor in place, temporally insert the threaded arm into the shaft to verify there is no interference. Arm may need to be bent after installation to avoid hitting other components. 2. Drill a 3/8 inch hole, on the marks made in Step 1a. Figure 11. Sensor mounted on right side of support member. 9-12 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation 3. Install two 5/16 x 1-inch bolts through the drilled holes and side row of holes in the side of sensor frame. Between the sensor and the support member you are mounting to, place several washers provided in the hardware kit, to allow for the stud and nut protruding on the side of the sensor. Without the washers, the sensor will be bent and damage may occur as the fasteners are tightened. 4. Install the arm assembly in the hole in the sensor pivot shaft with a nut and lock washer on each side of the shaft. 5. Verify arm alignment and tighten bolts to support member. IMPORTANT: Do not apply excessive torque. This can deform the sensor frame and prevent proper operation. Tighten nuts only enough to firmly hold the sensor in place and then check to see the arm pivots smoothly and always returns to the spring centered position. 6. Connect the free end of the chain to the S-hook on arm and pinch the hook closed. The spring is supplied for various mounting locations. It is recommended to remover the spring as it may stretch and thus lose any header height settings in the monitor. This may cause you to unexpectedly stop logging data. Additional chain length may be needed, depending on mounting location, so when header is all the way down, the header height is not pulled off. Figure 12. Securing the chain to the main lifting arm of the header. (Picture indicates the use of a hose clamp; instead a U-bolt Clamping plate and S-Hook is provided) September 2003 2006100-8 9-13

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Figure 13. Back view of header sensor showing its mounting and bending in the arm to avoid hitting other components of the machine. 7. Mount the U-bolt, clamping plate, and S-hook to the right main lifting arm of the header. Mount it so that the S-hook and nylock nuts are on the top of the lifting arm. 8. Secure the end of the chain to the S-hook secured to the U-bolt on the main lifting arm of the header. See Figure 12. IMPORTANT: Ensure the chain will be clear of any rotating shafts and does not pull on the rod at an extreme side angle. 9. It may be necessary to bend the threaded rod to prevent interference with other components. See Figure 13. 10. Route header sensor cable to the area under the cab to the distribution cable. 11. Connect header sensor cable to the distribution cable. 9-14 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation Installing the Flow Sensors It is important that you closely follow the instruction and measure carefully in order to achieve the correct sensor alignment. Sensor installation overview: 1. You will begin by locating and drilling two holes on the back of the cleaner. 2. Temporarily Mount the emitter mounting bracket on the back of the cleaner and mark the appropriate holes. 3. Remove the mounting bracket and make all of the appropriate holes and cuts then remount the emitter bracket and use the special template to make a center punch mark on the other wall of the cleaner. 4. Drill the two center punched holes and bolt the thin flat galvanized template on the inside surface of the cleaner and mark all of the holes and slots. 5. Remove the template and cut and drill the inside wall of the cleaner. 6. Mount the detector bracket and sensor shield. Refer to Figures 14, 15 and 16. Figure 14. Picture showing the back of the cleaner with the emitter mounting plate and emitters installed. September 2003 2006100-8 9-15

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation Sensor Installation CAUTION: To prevent death or injury to you or others, ensure the basket lock is engaged before accessing the area under the basket. The basket lock is located near the front cylinder that raises the basket. IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to electrical components on the machine, disconnect the 3 wire connecting block located under the cab before welding or cutting on the machine with a plasma torch. The connectors are located under the console, you need a 9/32 inch socket and extension to disconnect. See Figure 17. Figure 17. Connecting block under the cab. IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the doffer brushes, remove the cover on the back of the cleaner and use the two small engine shields to lay over the doffer brushes. This will prevent tools and hardware from falling down into the Cleaner Fan. See Figure 18. September 2003 2006100-8 9-17

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Figure 18. Engine covers over the Doffer Brushes. 1. Begin by locating the center of your cleaner on the basket side. Measure across the base of the cleaner and mark a center point. Using a framing square, draw a line up the center of the chute using the center mark for alignment. One of the mounting bolts is actually at the center. See Figure 19. 2. From the centerline and base of the cleaner, locate the top two holes where the emitter mounting bracket will mount (larger bracket as shown in the pictures). Measure from the flange See Figure 20 for the dimensions. 9-18 September 2003 2006100-8

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Figure 21. Emitter mounting bracket temporally mounted on cleaner. 3. Drill the two holes using the 9/32 drill bit provided. 4. Mount the emitter mounting bracket (larger bracket) using the two holes you just drilled and the two top holes of the bracket. The orientation of the bracket should be as indicated in Figure 21. The row of 6 studs should be on the upper portion. 5. Using the black marker provided, completely mark each bolt hole and the large rectangular holes. IMPORTANT: You must also mark the large rectangle holes. You will measure from the rectangular holes to locate the hole you will cut in the back of the chute. 6. Remove the bracket from the cleaner. 7. Measure the required distance to locate the perimeter of the hole to be cut. Refer to Figure 22 for these dimensions. Obviously the bracket will not be on the cleaner (as shown in the picture), however, the marks from the rectangular holes will be on the cleaner. 9-20 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation Figure 22. Use these dimensions to mark the hole to be cut. 8. Once the marks are made to locate the perimeter of the hole, connect the marks to make a complete outline of the hole. See Figure 23. 9. Center punch and drill all of the holes marked with the 9/32 inch bit. It is recommended to drill the holes before cutting the large rectangular hole, since the drilling area will be more secure before the hole is cut. If you have access to a hand punch, cut the rectangular hole first, and then punch all of the mounting holes. 10. Using a suitable cutting device, cut the area of the chute out previously marked. See Figure 23. A plasma cutter works well, however, an air grinder or reciprocating saw will work as well. A torch may be used but you must be very careful to maintain a smooth edge and you must remove any slag. You should try and keep a radius at the corners of the rectangular hole you are cutting to reduce the stress concentration and thus reduce the probability of cracking the cleaner. 11. Use a grinder or file to remove all burrs and slag from the edges of all holes. September 2003 2006100-8 9-21

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Perimeter of hole to be cut Figure 23. Perimeter of hole marked for cutting. IMPORTANT: You should use extreme caution when using any type of torch. Completely clean the machine of any cotton or plant material in the area below of where you will be cutting to prevent fires. It is suggested that a fire extinguisher be available during this procedure. IMPORTANT: It is recommended to shield the saw teeth, doffers and fans from any slag or parts that may fall on them and cause fire or damage. The engine shields along the side of the machine can be coupled together to provide an easy effective shield. IMPORTANT: After cutting the hole, remove any burrs or slag that may be on the inside surface of the chute. There must be absolutely NO burrs, as they will create cotton "stringers" that may affect yield accuracy. 9-22 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation 12. Once all holes are cut and drilled, you will need to temporarily remount the emitter mounting plate to transfer a mark to the inner wall of the cleaner to mount the other mounting plate. Use the bolts in the four corners and possibly one in the center to securely hold the plate in its final position. See Figure 24. 13. Place the hinged template into the left mounting bracket and secure it with two 1/4 inch nuts. See Figure 25. 14. Place the 11/32 inch transfer punch (provided) into the hole and onto the trough of the hinged template. Slide the transfer punch until it touches the inner wall of the cleaner. Using a hammer and a larger bolt or punch as an extension, hit the transfer punch to make a mark on the inner wall of the cleaner. Figure 24. Use the hinged template and transfer punch to transfer a mark to the inner surface of the cleaner. September 2003 2006100-8 9-23

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Figure 25. Center punch resting in guide of the hinged template 15. Repeat the previous step for the right hand side. 16. Remove the emitter-mounting bracket on the back surface of the cleaner. 17. Using the transfer punch, make a better center mark at the two marks previously made. Use a 1/4 inch drill bit if you have one to drill the holes, otherwise use the 9/32 inch drill bit provided. See Figure 26. 18. Use two 1/4 inch bolts to temporarily mount the galvanized template onto the inner surface of the cleaner. Mount the flat template oriented as it is marked. See Figure 27. 19. Mark all holes and slots with the black marker. There should be very small holes, 5 on the top and bottom, and 1 on each end that represent the mounting holes of the detector mounting plate. 9-24 September 2003 2006100-8

Remove the galvanized template. 21. Connect the lines to make the perimeter of the hole that will be cut. See Figure 28. 22. Center punch and drill all of the marks made with the galvanized template. Use the 9/32 inch drill bit, unless a handpunch will be used. 23. Using a suitable cutting device, cut the area of the chute out previously marked. A plasma cutter works well, however, an air grinder or reciprocating saw will work as well. A torch may be used but you must be very careful to maintain a smooth edge and you must remove any slag. 24. You should try and keep a radius at the corners of the rectangular hole you are cutting to reduce the stress concentration and thus reduce the probability of cracking the cleaner. IMPORTANT: You should use extreme caution when using any type of torch. Completely clean the machine of any cotton or plant material in the area below of where you will be cutting to prevent fires. It is suggested to have a fire extinguisher available in case of fire. IMPORTANT: It is recommended to shield the saw teeth, doffers, and fans from any slag or parts that may fall on them and cause damage or fire. The engine shields along the side of the machine can be coupled together to provide an easy effective shield. 9-26 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation IMPORTANT: After cutting the hole, remove any burrs or slag that may be on the inside surface of the chute. There must be absolutely NO burrs, as they will create cotton "stringers" that may affect yield accuracy. Figure 29. View of both rectangular sections removed. 25. Before mounting the detector mount on the inside of the cleaner, you must trim the bottom part of the middle two vanes. There are four vanes that attempt to evenly distribute the cotton over the saw drum as it enters the cleaner. Two inches of the bottom of the two middle vanes must be removed in order to mount the detector mounting plate. There is likely a spot weld in the area that must be broken loose or ground through. Once the spot weld is broken, you can cut a slot or a wedge at the 2 inch mark on the portion of the vane sticking out. You can bend the piece back and forth causing it to break from induced fatigue. Grind smooth any sharp edges and slag. See Figures 30. September 2003 2006100-8 9-27

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Remove lower 2 inches Figure 30. Lower 2 inches of middle vanes removed to mount plate. 26. Once all cutting, drilling and burr removal is complete, you may now mount the detector mounting plate. 27. Using the 1/4 x 1/2 inch bolts and flange nuts, mount the detector mounting plate so the heads of the screws are on the "clean" cotton side of the cleaner. The mounting plate should be mounted on the uncleaned side of the cleaner. See Figure 31 and 32. Figure 31. Finally you can permanently mount the emitter mounting plate on the back side of the cleaner. Use the 1/4 x 1/2 inch bolts and flange nuts to fasten the bracket to the exterior of the cleaner. Mount the bolts so the heads are on the inside of the cleaner. 29. Mount the hinge as shown in Figure 33 and 34 with the head of the bolt to the outside. 30. Mount the shield to the hinge, as shown in Figure 33 and 34, with the heads of the bolt on the outside. For ease of installation, the nuts are already attached to the hinge. Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation Installing the Flow Sensor Cables The flow sensor cable has two sides, one for the detectors (inside the cleaner) and one for the emitters (back side of cleaner). The cable for the detectors has a bulkhead connector that will mount to the side wall of the cleaner. The detector cable has large red/black connectors that mount to the detector (sensor without a cable). 1. Mark a spot on the side wall (opposite the basket dumping side) of the cleaner that is in line with the center of the bracket mounted inside the cleaner. Make the mark so the bulkhead connector, at the end of the detector cable, is as close as possible to the inner wall that the detector mounting bracket is attached to. Be careful and make certain the mounting surface is flat. Avoid the small piece that is attaching the inner wall to the side walls. See Figure 35. Figure 35. holes drilled in the side of the cleaner to mount the bulkhead connector. September 2003 2006100-8 9-31

Cotton Stripper Installation Ag Leader Technology Figure 36. Bulkhead connector mounted to side wall of the cleaner. 2. Center punch the mounting location and drill using the hole saw provided. It is recommended to drill the centering hole from the inside and complete the cutting of the large hole from the exterior. See Figure 36. 3. Place the bulkhead connector through the hole on the outside to mark the four mounting holes (the cable will actually mount on the inside but in this application it is only used as a template for the four mounting holes). 4. Center punch the four marks and drill using the small drill bit included. 5. Push the connector from the inside so the connector portion is protruding to the outside of the cleaner. Using the self-tapping screws, fasten the bulkhead connector to the cleaner from the outside of the cleaner. See Figure 36 and 37. 6. Run the long portion of the emitter flow sensor cable to the distribution cable under the cab. The cable can be run along the top of the cleaner and down the main chute behind the cab, then through the opening around the main chute and connect to the distribution cable. Or the cable can be ran along the side of the cleaner and fasten with bolted cable clamps. See Figure 38. Tie any extra cable at the distribution cable to prevent it from being damaged. Use plastic ties to secure the cable as it runs to the distribution cable. 7. Tightly screw the emitter flow sensor cable onto the protruding portion of the detector cable. 9-32 September 2003 2006100-8

Install the emitters (sensors with the cable) on the back of the cleaner. 9. Connect the emitters to its respective connector that was ran from the side of the cleaner. Route the cables through the slot on the side wall of the emitter mounting bracket. The lengths of the appropriate emitter flow sensor cable determines which connector hooks up to which emitter. See Figure 39. 10. Using the cable clamps provided, clamp the cables down to the two small studs in-between the sensors. Using the smaller clamp on the left stud and a larger clamp on the right stud. 11. Use cable ties to secure all cables and prevent them from interfering with the basket as it raises and lowers. 12. The Detector Cable inside the cleaner needs to the secured. Using one of the large cable clamps, secure the detector flow sensor cable to the stud on the left side of the mounting bracket See Figure 40. 13. Connect the cable to its respective sensors. 9-34 September 2003 2006100-8

Ag Leader Technology Cotton Stripper Installation John Deere 7450/7455 14. Secure the cable as needed under the shield. IMPORTANT: Re-connect the wire connector blocks under the cab that was removed to prevent damage to the electrical system from welding or cutting with a plasma torch. Figure 40. With large cable clamp, clamp the cable using the stud provided. Final Inspection Installation is now complete. Do a walk around of the machine and complete the following: All cable connections have been made. Excess cable has been tied out of the way, so there is no potential interference. All tools and extra hardware have been removed from the machine. All cap screws and captive nuts are tight on the sensor mounts. September 2003 2006100-8 9-35
