ENGINE MONITORING SYSTEM For Caterpillar Electronically Controlled Marine Engines 3176 3196 3406E 3408C 3412C

Introduction The Caterpillar Engine Monitoring System (EMS) is designed to display various engine and transmission parameters in both analog and digital forms for Caterpillar electronically controlled marine engines. The display technology provides excellent visibility in different light conditions. The system also has the ability to display vessel speed when connected to a GPS Interface Module. The Engine Monitoring System includes three individual gauge units which can be installed in various locations to enhance operator and vessel operation. One main unit is required for each desired operator station. The tachometer and quad-gauge units are optional and will operate only by being connected to a main unit. Each unit is contained within a separate sealed box. Power-Up Test Function EMS undergoes an automatic self-test every time the EMS is powered up. While executing this internal test, the display provides a visual indication by ramping gauges and displaying all digits to ensure the panel is working correctly. Communication Data Link EMS provides two pins that are connected to the Cat data link. The data link is available to share data with other modules on the link. The electronic control system will process engine and transmission parameters such as pressures, temperatures, percent load, engine speed, and diagnostic information. These engine parameters will then be transmitted to EMS through Cat data link. The main EMS unit will receive this information and display the information on various gauges. Only two wires from the ECM to EMS are required to transmit all parameters. Power Supply Supply range: 18 to 32 Volts DC, 24 Volts DC nominal Environmental Specifications 1. These diagnostics can be used for system troubleshooting and diagnostic information. EMS Main Unit, cont. LCD Digital Display Beneath the warning lamps is an LCD digital display for engine parameters. Display Scroll Feature Each time the scroll forward switch is depressed and held, EMS will page through the engine and transmission parameters in the same order listed below. When the scroll backward switch is depressed and held, EMS will page through the engine and transmission parameters in the reverse order. The abbreviation for the parameter will be displayed. When the scroll switch is released, EMS will display the current real time value for that parameter. Quad-Gauge Unit Engine Oil Engine Coolant Temperature Transmission Oil Transmission Oil Temperature Engine Oil The upper left gauge is used to display engine oil pressure 0 kpa to 600 kpa (87 psi). When the oil pressure reaches below 70 kpa (10 psi) the engine oil pressure gauge needle will enter the red zone and the alarm will activate. Engine Coolant Temperature The upper right gauge is used to display engine coolant temperature from 0 to 120 C (248 F). When coolant temperature reaches above 102 C (214 F) the gauge needle will enter the red zone and the alarm will activate. Transmission Oil The lower left gauge is used to display transmission oil pressure from 200 to 3000 kpa (29 to 435 psi). When the transmission oil pressure reaches above 2756 kpa (400 psi), the needle of the gauge will enter the red zone and the alarm will activate. Transmission Oil Temperature The lower right gauge is used to display transmission oil temperature from 0 to 120 C (248 F). When the transmission oil temperature reaches above 99 C (210 F), the needle of the gauge will enter the red zone and the alarm will activate. NOTE: The gauge needles may not return to the 0 position when the power is cycled off. 6

Tachometer Unit Engine Speed 10 15 20 5 0 MPH km/h 25 x100 30 Vessel Speed Trolling Status Synchronization Status Tachometer Gauge The tachometer gauge displays engine speed from 0 to 3000 rpm in analog form. LCD Digital Display Vessel Speed The left side of the window displays vessel speed in miles per hour or kilometers per hour with a three-digit LCD indicator. Depending on the position of the U.S./metric switch, mph or km/h will be diplayed. The default setting is km/h. This feature is only displayed if the GPS interface module is installed. Trolling Mode Indicator The right side of the window has a two-digit LCD indicator. The left digit is for trolling mode status. The * symbol will turn on during trolling mode operation. Engine Synchronization Indicator The right side of the window has a two-digit LCD indicator. The right digit is for engine synchronization status. The < or > symbols are used to indicate engine synchronization status. When the > is on, the engines are synchronized to the STARBOARD engine throttle. The < indicates the engines are synchronized to the PORT engine throttle. 7
